To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PnY'roN L. GUnsT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Gown runs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in vapor governors, and has for its object to provide mechanism for use in connection with steam heating systems, for regulating the temperature, and to prevent over pressure in the boiler and mains.

The present embodiment of the inventlon is shown in connection with the steam heating system, consisting of a furnace 1 of the usual construction, and a series of radiators 2, the furnace being connected to the radiators by a steam line 3. The condensation line 4: leads from the radiators to the improvement to be described.
This improvement comprises a column 5 having connected with the bottom thereof a pipe 6, which connects with the boiler so that the water in the boiler has free access to the column. The top of the column is provided with a cover 7 having a central opening 8 and an annular series of openings 9 encircling the opening 8, said openings S and 9 providing. free communication between the interior of the column and the atmosphere.
A gage 10 is arranged at the front of the column, said gage communicating withthe column at the top and bottom by connections 11 and 12, and valves 13 are provided at connections 11 and 12 for shutting 01f the gage from the column. The connection 12 is also provided with a drain valve 14:.
A float 15 is arranged within the column and this float is connected in any suitable manner with the drafts of the furnace, the connection being made in part by the chain 16 connected with the float, and extending through the opening 8 of the cover. The arrangement is such that when the float is lifted beyond the predetermined point by the expansion of the water in the boiler and in the column, the drafts will be closed. It will be noticed that the float is hollow and it is of suflicient weight to keep it almost submerged.
Two auxiliary columns 17 and 18 are arranged in rear of the main column 5, and the said columns 17 and 18- communicate with the main column 5 near the top of the columns by a common opening 19. Each column 17 and 18 is provided near its lower end with a threaded nipple 20 and 21, respectively, and each nipple is closed by a plug 22 and 23, respectively. Near their tops, the columns 17 and 18 have nipples 21 and 25, the latter being adapted for connection with the pipe 27 of the condensation line, while the former is adapted for connection, under conditions to be presently set forth, with the pipe 26 of the condensation line, being however, normally closed by a "plug 39.
The column 17 has a nipple 28 in its top and into this nipple is threaded one end of a pipe 26. The pipe 26 is internally threaded, and a pipe 30 is threaded into the lower end of the pipe, the said pipe 30 depending into the auxiliary column 17 to near the nipple 20, and the lower end of the said pipe 30 is open.
A pipe 31 is connected wth the upper end of the auxiliary column 18, the said pipe being threaded into a nipple 32 at the top of the column and the said pipe 31 communicates with a condensing radiator 33, from which a pipe 33 1 leads, the said pipe communicating with the atmosphere in the ash pit or flue or directly as the case may be.
The chain 16 passes over direction elements 35 to the ash pit. door, and another chain 36 leads from the chain 16' over direction elements 37 to the damper in the flue, the arrangement being such that when the float is lifted the ash pit door and the flue damper will be moved in opposite directions.
It will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. 1, that the condensation line pipe which leads direct from the steam line, namely the pipe 26, opens into the short column 17, while the condensation line pipe 27 which leads from the radiators, that is from the pipes 4, opens into the longer column 18. A partition 38 is arranged within the column 18, extending from the top thereof to near the bottom of the column, but being spaced apart from the bottom of the column to form a communication beneath the partition. The arrangement is such that condensation from the pipe 27 must pass downwardly beneath the partition, before it can escape into the main column Pressure from the condensation line pipe :26, that is pressure fromthe steam line, must pass down through the pipe 30 to the bottom of the pipe 17 be fore'it can pass upwardly into the column The column 18 is of greater length than the column 17 in order to preserve the water seal in the column 18 when column 17 s blown ut.

in operation the governor is regulated so that Zero is set even with thedesired water line of the boiler, and when suthcient steam pressure is generated in the boiler, the water displaced will rise in the column or cylinder 5.. At, the same time the water in the pipe 30, which of brass, is displaced downward by the pressure from the steam line, and if the pressure is continued to a sutlicientdegree, the excess pressure will vent by way of the opening. 1.9 and the openingsS and 9 to the atmosphere. As soon as this venting takes place, the water in the main column 5 will lower, so that there is no possibility of excess pressure forcing the water. from the column to overflow.

The action of the device is entirely automatic, depending entirely upon the pressure in the boiler, the mains and the radiators.
I claim:
1. In a steam heating system, the combination with the boiler, the radiators, the
steam line leading from the boiler to the radiators, and the condensation lines leading from the steam line and the radiators, of a governor comprising a column communicating with the atmosphere at its upl with the other of the said auxiliary columns near the top thereof, a condlensing radiator communicating with the top of the" first namedauxiliary column, said first named auxiliary column being of less length than the la-st named auxiliary and having a depending tube in the same depending tov near, the bottom of the said colum nthe last named column having a partition extending to near the bottom thereof to, constrain the pressure to pass beneath the partition before it can enterthe main column.
2. In a steam heating system, the combination with the boiler, the radiators, the 9 steam line leading from the boiler to the, radiators, and the condensation line leadingfrom the steam line and the. radiators,
of a governor comprising a column communicating with the atmos 'ihere at its upper end and with the boiler at its lower end, a float in the column and connected with the drafts of the boiler to control the same, said column having auxiliary columns communieating therewithat the tops 01" the main and auxiliary columns, the: condensation line tromthe radiators communicating with one of said auxiliary columns near the; top, thereof, the condensation line of the steam line connnunicating with the other of the said auxiliary columns near the top thereof, a condensing radiator communicating with the top of the first named auxiliary column, said first named auxiliary columnbeing of less length than the last named auxiliary column and having a depending tube in the same depending to near the bottom of the said cohnninithe last named column having a partition extending to near the bottom thereof. l

A device of the character specified comprising arcolumn open at its upperen d and adapted to communicate at its lower end with the boilen said column having auxil iary. columns communicating therewith at the top, of the main and auxiliary columns, condensation lines'from the. steam line and the radiators, respectively, communicating with the said auxiliary columns at the tops thereof, and extending to near the bottoms thereof, said auxiliary columns being adapted to contain a Water seal, a float in the main column and adapted for connection with the drafts of the boiler to control the same, the auxiliary column with which the condensation line from the radiators communicates being of greater depth than the other auxiliary column.
4. A device of the character specified, comprising a column opened at its upper end and adapted for connection with the boiler at its lower end, a float in the column and connected with the drafts of the boiler for controlling the same, the condensation lines from "the steam line and the radiators, respectively, communicating with the said column at the top thereof and a water seal in connection with each of the said com- Vmunications, said seal in connection with the condensation line from the radiators being of greater depth than the other seal.
