IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 123,512, dated February 6, 1872.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. Roe-Ens, of Churchville, in the county of Augusta and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing- Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention apperta-ins to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,referrin g to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my machine, and Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the upper portion of the same.

A represents a beam, of any suitable dimensions, attached to and supported at each end by two legs, B B, which are braced and connected, in any convenient manner, at or near their lower ends, to form a firm frame, in which my washingmachine is suspended. From the beam A two arms, 0 0, project vertically downward, and on the sameis formed the rubber, consisting, on both sides, of the vertical and inclined longitudinally-corrugated surfaces 1) D, respectively, and the upper inclined flatsurface E, as shown in Fig. 1. G rep resents the washingmachine box, constructed substantially in the form shown in the drawing, and provided in the center of each side with a metal strap, a, which extends a short distance above the edges of the box. In holes in the upper ends of these metallic straps to a are passed hooks b b, which have screw-threads on their upper ends, and are passed from below upward through the beam A, and are there secured by thumb-nuts cl d, thus suspending the box from the beam A, the arms 0 O and rubber passing downward into the same. When desired, the box can readily be removed by merely unscrewing the thumb-nuts cl d. In each end of the box G, is placed ahorizontally-corruga-ted, curved wash-board, H, with a board, I, at the top. This wash-board and board are secured to bars J J, bent to correspond with the shape of the end of the box, so as to lit in the same. A rocking motion is given to the box G by means of a handle, K, at each end, or by a lever, arranged in any suitable manner; and, when thus in motion, the clothes are pressed between the stationary rubber in the center and the wash-boards at the ends.

The wash-boards, being movable, will, during the motion of the box, slide forward slightly, and thus make them, as it were, elastic, so as to yield to the pressure of the clothes on the stationary rubber. The wash-boards are readily taken out for cleaning the box.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the stationary rubber D E and the sliding wash-boards H H in the rocking box G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the box G, metallic straps a. a, hooks I) I), cross-beam A, and thumbnuts 61 cl, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the frame A B, arms G 0, rubber D D E, box G, wash-boards H H, straps to a, hooks b b, and thumb-nuts d d, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
