Be it known that I, GEORGE S. NICKUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendale, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new 'and useful Mechanical Badge, of which the following is la specication.
This invention relates to improvements in clubs and orders of various characters and resides in the provision of a badge of novel and decorative character which includes a movable display member cooperating with sound producing means, said display member and sound producing means serving to add to Vthe attractiveness of the badge and rendering it mystifying and amusing.
Another object is to provide a' badge of the character described which is of comparatively small, inexpensive and simple lconstruction and adapted to be easily and quickly attached upon the lapel of a coat Vorother garment.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations,
and arrangement of parts as will be more i fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 designates as an entirety a button or stationary `member of the badge that is adapted to be worn upon the outside of the lapel of a coat or other garment so as-to 'be plainly visible. This button is preferably circular but may be of any desired shape and has a club emblem or other-decorative matter 2 on its outer face.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2st, 1917. Serial No. 43,729.
I provide a preferably circular casing 4- for a flexible movable display member 5, said display member 5 comprising a ribbon or elongated piece of cloth preferably and bearing descriptive matter of any suitable character. The casing et for said member 5 contains a spring motor or clockwork mechanism designated G as an entirety which is adapted to normally hold the member 5 in wound-up concealed position within the casing il and to quickly wind the member 5 into such position after it has been pulled out of the casing le into display position. The member 5 is normally in concealed position, a tassel 7 acting as a finger-piece and stop, being the only portion of the member 5 which projects from the casing 1l. The wall of the casing l that is opposed to the inner face of the garment to which the badge is secured, carries a flat spring clip 8 which is inserted through and clamps the eye 3 upon the button 1, thus holding the casing 4 and button 1 in position upon the garment to which they are attached.
The spring motor or clockwork 6 comprises a spring case 9 which carries a large drive pinion 10 and is similar to the spring case and drive pinion found in watches and clocks. This pinion 10 through the medium of a 'train of gears 1l rotates a winding drum l2 journaled within the casing 4t, said drum 12 being provided with flanges 13 near its ends and with openings 111 formed transversely therethrough so as to provide for the securing of the member 5 to the drum. The drum 12 is located directly above a segmental opening 15 formed in the peripheral wall of the casing et so as to allow the member 5 to be moved into and out of the casing.
There is provided sound producing means designated 16 as an entirety and which is arranged to coperate with the spring motor mechanism so as to produce sounds when the display member 5 is being wound upon the drum 12. vThis means 16 comprises, in this instance, a bell 17 of frusto-conical. form and which is spaced from the casing t. A clapper 18 adapted to strike the bell 17' is pivoted as at 19 intermediate its ends upon the frame 20 for the clockwork mechanism 6 and has a cam face 2l on the end thereof farthest removed from the clapper end. A ratchet wheel 22 rotatably mounted upon the frame 20 carries a pin 23 to engage llO with the cam face 21 of the clapper 18 once during every revolution of the ratchet wheel so as to move the clapper and causeit to strike the bell. Escapement means 2li coperating with the ratchet wheel 22 causes the ratchet wheel to move intermittently and the clapper to be actuated in a corresponding manner. The escapement means 24 includes a weight member 24a which operates to hold one end of the escapement means in position for engagement with the teeth of the ratchet. The escapement means is so constructed that when the ratchet is moved against the end thereof, such as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the cam action resulting will force said end outwardly and the opposite end will engage the ratchet. The engagement of the escapement with the ratchet is momentary and the weight member 24 assists in the operation of the escapemont means as is the case in escapement means employed in clocks, watches and the like. Any suitable means of this character may be provided. A clutch member 25 is mounted upon the shaft for the ratchet 22 and comprises two clutch elements one of which is slidable and splined on the shaft for the ratchet 22 and the other of which is fixed to a pinion 26 which is free upon the ratchet shaft and meshes with the drive gear 10. The first named clutch element is held outward for engagement with the other clutch element by a spring 27 and said clutch elements are provided with facial teeth which permit relative rotation in one direction only, the said members being adapted to coperate and produce rotation of the ratchet 22 when the clockwork mechanism 6 is winding up the member 5 only.
In operation, after the badge has been placed upon the wearer as previously described, the tassel 7 is grasped and the display member 5 pulled so as to cause it to be unwound from the drum 12 and presented to view, said member 5 passing through the opening 15 in the casing 1. The unwinding of the member 5 causes the drum to rotate and transmit a rotary movement through the medium of the train of gears 11 to the spring case 10, causing said spring therein to be wound up. Upon releasing the display member 5 after it has been brought into displaying position, the spring motor or clockwork mechanism 6 will wind the member 5 upon the drum 12 and the ratchet 22 will rotate through the medium of the clutch mechanism 25 therefor, thus causing the clapper 1S to be intermittently actuated and strike the bell, producing clearly audible sounds while the member 5 is being wound upon the drumv 12. The-tassel 7 is larger than the opening 15in the casing 4land acts as a stop to prevent the member 5 from being wound completely into the casing.
In the present embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the button or stationary badge member 1 carries the emblem of the B. I). O. E. Society thereon and shows the face of a clock having the hands stopped at the hour of eleven. The display member 5 is preferably a piece of tape or ribbon and in this instance carries descriptive data or some well-known phrase and the sound producing means 16 is arranged to strike the bell eleven times in keeping with the representation of the time shown by the clock upon the button 1. The number of times that the bell is rung is governed by the length of the display member 5, it being made longer for a great number of rings and shorter for a few rings. It will be seen that badges constructed in accordance with this invention may be made to aptly represent various clubs, lodges and other social orders and will prove mystifying, interesting and extremely attractive in appearance and in operation. The escapement means 24 regulates the speed of rotation of the ratchet 22 in accordance with the duration of rotation thereof so as to provide for the striking of the bell eleven times.
I consider the manner of fastening my improved badge upon the coat of the'wearer an important feature of this invention since it is possible to conceal the mechanical operating means of the badge behind the lapel of a coat. When in use the only portion of the badge appearing is the stationary or button portion 1 thereof and possibly the tassel 7 of the member 5, this being dependent upon the manner and position in which the badge is worn. v
It is understood that the invention is not, 105 limited to the exact construction shown in the drawings and described above, but that deviations therefrom may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a mechanical badge, the combination with a stationary member, of a display member carried by the stationary member, sound producing means carried by the sta- 115 tionary member,said display member being normally concealed in the stationary member and adapted to be pulled into display position, and means to return the display member into concealed position actuat- 120 ing the sound producing means while the display member is being returned to coning the member upon the drum, and sound producing means actuated When the member is Wound upon the drum.
3. A mechanical badge comprising a casing', a drum Within the casing, a HeXible display member secured to and adapted to be Wound upon the drum, said display member adapted to be pulled from the casing and unwound` from the drum so as to be presented to View, spring means for Winding the member upon the drum, sound producing means, and means to actuate the sound producing means a predetermined length of time.
4. A mechanical badge comprising a casing, a drum Within the casing, a flexible display member secured to and adapted to be Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Wound upon the drum, said display member adapted to be pulled from the casing and unwound from the drum so as to be presented to View, spring means for Winding the member upon the drum, sound producing means, and means to actuate the sound producing means a predetermined length of time and to provide for a predetermined number of sounds.
