HULK-CAN.
Application led March 5, 1913, Serial No. 752,038.
To all whom t may Concern:
Be it known that I, Marron t. on, a. subject of the King of Great Britain, a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for sealing the top or open end of a milk can by means of a moisture-proof closure and to protect said closure by means vof a metal cover. The metal cover is so constructed that it assists in holding the seal rigidly in position and protects the same from all damage either `from causes outside of th.l can, or from the weight of the milk in the can, shouhdthe can be suiiiciently inclined or be inverted, thereby bringing the weight of the milk against the moisture-proof seal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal cover with a sealing Hange adapted to tightly Ht an Vupstanding neck ol' throat carried by the can, and to provide an interlocking means by which these two parts may be securely locked together so that the said cover Hangs will form a dustproof outer seal for the can.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the upper end of the can throat or neck that the moisture-proof seal may be placed thereover and securely attached thereto and at the same time permit the cover sealing Harige to Ht closely around the upstandin neck. To accomplish this the upper en of the neck is reduced in diameter to form an inwardly extending annular shoulder and the upper end of the reduced portion is beaded on its outer side to form a Hange under which the sealing cover may be forced and secured by an annular tie device.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide the cover on its under side with a cap having a Hat upper wall, the downwardly extending art of this cap forming the cover flange. T e Hat upper wall of this cap is adapted to contact with and to protect the entire seal across the top of the can neck so that said seal will be backed with a rigid supporting surface, thereby eHectively preventing any breaking or rupture of said seal either through the careless handling of the can or by the weight of the contents of the can being brought thereon.

Renewed September 29,4 1913. Serial No. lQZAZ'ZS.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan view of the can with the cover detached and inverted;
Fig. 2 a vertical central sectional view of the can with the cover in position thereon:
Fig. 3 a detail perspective view of the can seal detached and inverted;
Fig. 4 a detail vertical sectional view of the can neck showing the can provided with a lining and the seal in position thereon;
Fig. 5 a detail side elevation of a portion of the canneck and the cover Hange, showing the interlocking means; land Fig. 6 a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale of a portion of the cover and the can neck interlocked.
Referring to the various parts by numerels, l designates the can body and 2 the upwardly extending contracted neck or throat thereof. The upper end of this neck is` reduced in diameter, at 3, to form the inwardly extending shoulder 4; and the up# per end of this reduced portion is formed into an exterior annular bead or flange 5. Extending over the open upper end of the` neck is a seal 6 which is preferably formed of moisture-proof and impervious material, such as paper properly treated, or any other suitable materlal. This seal is bent around the bead 5 and terminates approximately on the shoulder 4. A suitable tie wire or band 7 is then secured in position around said seal, said wire drawing the seal inwardly under the bead 5 and preventing the upward withdrawal of the seal. This sealing wire or band, or other device, is permanently and rigidly secured in position so that it can not be removed without breaking it. The part 3 of the neck is sufficientlyY reduced in diameter to permit the seal and the securing band to be placed thereover without projecting outwardly beyond the outer surface of the neck 2, as shown clearly in Fig. 6, and for a purpose which will be hereinafter descrlbed.
The cover 8 is provided on its inner side with a cap 9 formed with an annular depending cover flange 10. lThe upper wall l()a of this cap is Hat, or smooth and is adapted to directly contact .with the seal 6 and to support the seal throughout its entire u per surface. This upper wall of the cap a o forces the seal into direct and close contact with the surface of the bead 5, the corner formed by the junction of the cover Hange 10 with the upper wall 10 of the cap litting approximately against the seal and forcing the same into contact with the bead 5, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 6.
The cover flange 10 of the cap lits snugly against the exterior surface of the neck 2 and forms a dust-proof protection forvtrhe seal and prevents the accumulation of dirt or dust in the space formed 'by the yreduced portion 3 of the neck. This flange also prof 13 which open intothe channels 12, the' lower wall of these slots inclining upwardly f slightly as shown in Fig. 5. It is manifestk that'by placing the cover over the neck in such position that the lugs 11 register with the -channels the said cover may be forced downwardly to bring the wall 10a of the capy into contact with the seal 6 andv to bring the lugs 11 into registerwith the slots 13 of the cover flange. By then rotating the cover in the proper direction the lugs 11 will engage the inclined lower walls A13a of the slots and serve 'as cams to draw the cover downwardly and to lock it in contact with the seal. 'This will prevent the accidental disconnection of the cover from the can; and the wall 10a of the cap will so brace and support the seal 6 that it cannot be broken either through the careless handling of the can orthrough the weight of the material in the can being brought on'said seal by undue tilting, or by upsetting the can;
If desired the can may be provided with alining as shown at 15 in Fig. 4, this lining being carried upwardly and over the bead 5 on the neck, and the seal 6 being then placed in position over the edge of the lining and tied in place, thereby securely holding the upper edge of the lining.
The cover is preferably permanently connectedto the can body by means of a strong chain 16 so that it cannot be whollyl kdisconnected from the can. The tie wire or band 7 is to be of Vany suitable. .material which WhenbrQkencOuId not' be again used, thereby indicating whether'for not the contents of the can had been tamperedy with after it was originally sealed.

2. A liquid-tight receptacle comprising a can provided with a neck theupper edge of which is rolled to form an external bead, said beaded upper edge being of less diameter than the body portion of said neck, a flexible moisture seal extending across the mouth of the can and having its edges terminating below said external bead, a sealing band confining the edge of said seal beneath said bead,fand a kcover having a flat central portion extending entirely over the mouth of the can in contact with said moisture seal, said cover being formedwith a depending annular flange inclosing the moisture seal and sealing bandy and rvclosely fitting the body portion of the can neck below said 'bead and sealing band, and means
