Be it known that I, @Hannes L. BOND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Weighing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic weighing devices and has for an object to provide a mechanism for receiving material and automatically discharging the same in accurately weighed and divided quantities. It has for al further object to provide a receptacle provided with a plurality of compartments and having an automatic control mechanism, whereby the said compartments successively receive the material to be weighed, and each compartment is automatically discharged after the predetermined weight of material has been delivered thereto. Another object of the invention is to provide a plurality of compartments, each having a separate discharge means for the contents thereof, said discharge means being simultaneously controlled in such a manner that the discharge means of one compartment is open while the other is closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic trip mechanism for controlling the respective discharge doors of the receptacle compartments, which trip mechanism is capable of adjustment so that the time of discharge may be regulated according to requirements and afford a delicate means for overcoming lost motion or frictional losses so that the quantity of material received and weighed each time may be accurately regulated.
A further object is to provide a locking device for the discharge doors which is automatically released at a predetermined time to discharge from one compartment and which operates in a positive manner to lock the discharging means of the other compartment which is to be filled and then discharged at the neXt operation. A still further object is to provide a means operable in conjunction with the discharge door for preventing the material collecting upon the discharge door adjacent to the lower edge ofthe compartment and where it may servian obstag cle to prevent the closed position.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will be more fully understood from the description hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction of weighing device as hereinafter more fully described and defined in the claims.

Springs 34 are arranged between the larger set of wings and normally tend to draw them together'to automatically regulate the size of the dischargeopening and both sets of wings arel preferably operated by an arm 35 ixedv to a rock spindle 36eXten'ding transversely of one end of the plate and carrying a crank karm 37 connected by alink 38 to a second crank arm 39 upon the rock spindle 40. By this arrangement, it-will b'e'seen that movement of the two4 rock spindles 36 and 40 causes the'inner'pair of wings 33 to be moved toward or away fromeach other and thereby through contact witlrthe spring pressed wings 32 cause the latter to be opened or closed. This arrangement provides Va substantially rectangular shaped' discharge opening 41, the longitudinal axis of which is in substantial alinement with the partition between the receptacle compartments. The regulating arm 35, as here shown, is provided with a laterally disposed'pin 42 arrangedto be spring pressed into engagement 'with any one of a number of openings 43upon`anin dicator plate 44 -iixed to the plate 31, by means of which the extent of opening of the gate may be determined with accuracy for any material. ln caseA itisV necessary to vary the opening of the gate during the feeding of the material and restore-it again to its adjusted position I have providedv asecond lever .45 having aV pin'46 `also adapted to engage the aforesaid'openings 43 and `so arranged as to be in the path: of movement of the gate operating lever 35. This makes it unnecessary to test the adjustment in case the operating lever 35 is temporarily moved from normal position for one reason or another.
47 designates a deliector plate within the upper part of the receptacle and fixed to the rock shaft 14; it is preferably srdostantially V-shaped in form, and its function is to swing to one side or the other in accordance with the position of the doors 11 so that the material feeding through the gate is directed into the hopper of which the discharge door is closed.
4S designates a discharge hopper, here located beneath the weighing receptacle 7 and in a position to receive the contents of either of the compartments as one or the other of the doors may open to discharge the material. It will be understood that this hopper discharges directly into a container 49, such as a carton, can or the like, for the material. I have provided a platform 50 adj ustably mounted upon the stand; ard 1 for supporting the container and properly positioning it with respect to the discharge hopper 48.
In the operation of the device, the discharge door of one of the receptacle comw partments is closed and the desired weight placed upon the scale support 6, said weight corresponding to the quantity of the mate rial to be successively delivered by each receptacle. The material from thel hopper feeds by gravity through the gate 30 which has, of course, been properly adjusted to freely feed the particular material, and when the compartment has been filled to the point where the receptacle overbalances the scale, said receptacle descends thereby bringing the trip arm 18, corresponding to that compartment, into engagement with the trip finger 19 to automatically actuate the door mechanism. The raising o-f the trip arm 1S of the filled compartment causes the pendulum arm 15 to be released from the catch 17, and the weight of the material acting on the door and parts to which the said pendulum arm isconnected causes it to swing with a pendulum movement to the opposite side of the receptacle, where it automatically engages the catch 1T for the opposite side and consequently locks the parts in a new operative position. This swinging of the pendulum takes place simultaneously with the movement of the doors, one door opening to discharge while the other automatically swings to closed position. 47 also swings to a new oosition so that the material being fed from the gate is dis- During this movement the deleetoz" charged into the compartment which was formerly empty, the door of which has just been closed. The opening of the doors may be accurately timed by adjusting the position of the trip fingers 19 so that the respective trip arms controlling the doors Contact with the respective fingers earlier or later according to requirements, thus making an adjustment which is extremely sensitive and accurate for governing the quantity of material weighed and discharged.
Attention is particularly directed to the adjustable feature of the trip fingers 19 in that the construction provides a means for varying the time of releasing the discharge doors and affords a very sensitive means for balancing the losses due to friction or losses caused by lost motion in any of the parts. In order to make this clear, it will be assumed that one of the compartments has been filled to the point where it overbalances the weight placed upon the scale, and the receptacle thereupon drops by gravity. lVhile the downward movement of the receptacle is relatively small, it may be suiiicient, in view of the fact that the material is still feeding into the compartment, to make a very material increase in the weight of the material to be discharged, and it therefore desirable to insure the door or doors opening promptly upon the downward movement caused by overbalancing of the weight. Of course, the movement of the receptacle toward its tripping position is more or less dependent upon the kind of material which is being weighed, and therefore it becomes necessary to vary the tripping point as may be required, this being done by operating the thumb screws 22 so that the trip fingers 19 are raised to meet the trip arms earlier in the downward movement or lowered so that the trip arms contact at a lower point in the downward movement. lt also provides an independent adjustment for each compartment of the receptacle te suit any contingency which may arise as to unequal freedom of operation of the parts on the two sides of the apparatus. This adjustment is an extremely sensitive one and is important in eecting an accurate weighing of the' material.
In connection-with the operation of the discharge doors the action of the scraper members 24 is important since a tendency of the material is to collect in the vicinity of the hinge or rear part of the doors and prevent them from closing tightly against the bottom of the receptacle. By the present construction, the downward movement of a door causes its scraper to move forwardly upon and relatively to the door, thereby pushing or removing any of the material which tends to adhere or stick at this place. When, therefore, the door r.- turns te its closed position it is free to seat noted that eachtrip arm and positively-close the discharge opening, asther'e is no collected material to interfere with the2proper operation of the parts.
In order to reduce the friction of the movable vpendulum locking device, it will be 1S is pro-vided with an independent pivoted catch member 17, so that when the pendulum pin 16 swings from one side to the other into engagement with the catches, it is not required to lift the lentire weight of the trip arm, but merely engages the comparatively light catch and passes by `.that to be automatically locked. Sincethe locking arm alsocarries an independently movable weight, itis given a more positive swinging action due to the inertia of this weight, and therefore accurately completes its stroke at each operation in order to insure the parts properly engaging to lock the doors for the necessary-time interval.
A very important feature of my improvement lies in the construction which enables the weighing of the exact quantity each time notwithstanding that the materials are falling into one hopper between the feeding means and materials actually at rest in the hopper at time of diverting the flow of the material into the other hopper and which falling material must be accounted 'for in the weighing operation. To operate the apparatus successfully, -it is first adjusted properly by the Weight upon the scale support 6 and weight 29 upon the graduated beam 2S and to do this the following preliminary manipulation is resorted to. Assuming that the amount to be weighed for each package is one pound, a one pound weight is'placed upon the scale support 6 and the auxiliaryweight 29 is moved on its graduated beam 2S so that it stands at zero at the fulcrum axis of the .scale beam 5. The material to be weighed is then fed down into the receptacle 7 as in the normal op- Y eration. When this'receptacle descends under the weight of the contents, the quantity so received and discharged through the door 11 is carefully weighed on an ordinary counter scales and the excess over one pound will represent the quantity 0f the material which was in the act of falling into the receptacle 7 at the time of diverting the supply by the deflector plate 17, and which falling quantity will be in excess of the actual pound required. When the amount of this excess is determined by weighing the charge from the receptacle 7 and ascertaining how much more than a pound the charge weighs, the weight 29 is moved outward upon the auxiliary graduated beam 28 awayfrom the weight upon the scale support 6 so as to reduce the pound weight thereon4 by the amount ofthe excess weight of the charge.
Then the adjustment of the weight 29 upon the graduated beam 28 has been made .be quickly determined and compensated for.
as above described, the apparatus may thereafter be operated as in the first instance, but now the falling material at the time of tripping the gate 417 will add its weight to that already in the receptacle and insure its` discharge and the weighed quantity at each discharge will be the exact one pound weight i as desired.
It will be particularly noted that the marking of the graduated beam 28 is the reverse of that ordinarily employed in scales, that is to say it is arranged to reduce the leffect of the fixed weight on the scale support 6 instead of adding to it as heretofore. Furthermore, it will be noted that the weight 29 is at Zero when in alinement with the fulcrum of the scale vbeam linstead of greatly to one side of the fulcrum as heretofore in scales. These dierences are very important features of my invention and most effective in its operation. To make an accurate weighing machine controlled by the weights of the materials being apportioned in the successive deliveries, it is essential to compensate for the fallingl material which, during its fall, does not add weight to the receptacle, but which later is deposited and is an excess tothe weight desired and by my invention this excess may without having to resort toa Vseries of test trials. Of course, the compensation would vary with the weight and density of the materials to be weighed, .and hence the weight 29 would be adjusted in the first instance for each kind of material to be handled.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have in the present instance shown and describedV the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be vunderstood that I do not restrict myself to the details, as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device-of the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a weight support fixed to said scale beam at one side of said standard, a receptacle pivoted to said beam at the opposite side of said standard, and divided into a plurality of compartments each compartment having a discharge opening atV the bottom, separately hinged doors respectively controlling the discharge openings, means actuated by the opening of one door for closing the other, a swinging locking device for holding each door in closed posi-` tion, a trip mechanism for automatically releasing the swinging locking device at predetermined times in its swinging movement, and means for adjusting said trip mechanism to vary the time of its operation.
2. In a device of the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a Weight supportfixed to said scale beam at one side of said standard, a receptacle pivoted to .said beam at the opposite side of said standard and divided into a plurality of compartments each compartment having a discharge opening at the bottom, separately hinged doors for respectively controlling the discharge openings, means actuated by the opening of one door for closing the other, a locking device common to both doors for holding each door alternately in closed position, trip arms suitably mounted to respectively control said locking device and adapted to move With said receptacle, trip fingers respectively located in the path of movement of said trip arms, and independent means for adjusting the position of each trip finger whereby the time of' engagement with the trip arms is varied according to requirements.
3. In a device of the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a Weight support fixed to said scale beam at one side of' said standard, a receptacle pivoted to said beam at the opposite side of said standard and divided into a plurality of compartments each compartment having a discharge opening at the bottom, separately hinged doors for respectively controlling the discharge openings, means actuated by the opening of one door for closing the other, trip arms pivotally secured to said receptacle and extending laterally from opposite sides of the receptacle, a pivoted catch mechanism carried by each trip arm, means common to both doors for alternately engaging the respective catch members to release one of the doors and lock the other door in closed position, and means located respectively in the path of movement of said trip arms whereby said common locking means is released at a predetermined time.
4. In a device of the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a weight support fixed to said scale beam at one side of said standard, a receptacle pivoted to said beam at the opposite side of said standard and divided into a plurality of compartments each compartment having a discharge opening at the bottom, doors for respectively controllingthe discharge openings, means actuated by the opening of one door for closing the other, trip arms pivotally secured to said receptacle and extending laterally from opposite sides thereof, a catch mechanism carried by each trip arm, means common to said doors for alternately engaging the respective catch members to lock one or the other of the doors in closed position, a pendulum member suitably connected to the door operating means anc provided With a latch for alternately engaging the respective catches, means pivoted to said pendulum member for assisting it in bringing said latch into positive engagement with the required catch member, and tripping means located respectively in the path of' movement of said trip arms for releasing' said pendulum member at the required time.
5. In a device of' the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a weight support fixed to said scale beam, a receptacle pivoted to said beam and divided into a plurality of compartments each compartment having a discharge opening at the bottom, doors for respectively controlling the discharge openings, means actuated by the opening of one door for simultaneously closing the other, trip arms pivotally secured to said receptacle, a catch mechanism carried by each trip arm, means common to said doors for alternately engaging the respective catch members to lock one or the other of the doors in closed position said means comprising a pendulum member suitably connected to the door operating means and operating with a latch for alternately engaging the respective catches, a deflector pivotally carried by the receptacle for guiding the material into either compartment and movable with the pendulum, and trip means located respectively in the path of movement of said trip arms for releasing said pendulum member at the required time.
6. In a device of the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a Weight support fixed to said scale beam, a receptacle pivoted to said beam and divided into a plurality of compartments each compartment having a discharge opening at the bottom, doors for respectively controlling the discharge opening, means actuated by the opening' of one door for simultaneously closing th'e other, a rock shaft common to said means and extending' transversely of said receptacle, a deflector plate fixed to said shaft and adapted to guide the material into either compartment, a pendulum member connected to said rock shaft, means to lock said pendulum member at the end of its stroke in either direction to maintain a discharge door locked in closed position and the defiector in operative position, and trip mechanism for automatically releasing said pendulum member at a predetermined time whereby the closed door is released to discharge the material while the open door is closed and the deflector shifted to a position "material having a discharge opening at lment upon said doors,
,and means for automatically to guide the material into the closed door compartment. f
7. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a receptacle for measuring the bottom, a horizontally hinged door pivoted to open and close the said discharge opening of the receptacle, automatic means for releasing the door to allow it to open when -the receptacle receives a proper quantity of material, and a hinged cleaning device carried by the receptacle on an axis below the hinged axis of the door and positioned with respect to the hinged door whereby said cleaning device slides over the inner surface ot the door adjacent to but separated from its hinged portion to remove any collected material which might interfere with the closing ot the door against the bottom of VVthe receptacle.
8. In a device of the character stated, a standard forming a support, a scale beam balanced thereon, a weight support iixed to said scale beam, a receptacle pivoted'to said beam and divided into a plurality ot compartments each compartment having a discharge opening at the bottom, doors for respectively controlling ythe discharge opening, means actu,- ated by the opening of one door for closing the other and vice versa, means to automatically control said door actuating means, scraper plates respectively hinged below the door hinges and mounted for sliding movesaid plates having angularly bent scraping edges which tit up against the outside of the lower edges of the receptacle when the doors are closed, and
means for causing each scraper plate to move upon and relatively to the'door during the movement of the door to open position.
9. In a device of the character stated, an automatic weighing device comprising a receptacle to receive material to be weighed, discharging the material from said receptacle in predetermined measured quantities, in combination with a gate for discharging into the weighing device comprising a plate having an opening therethrough, a plurality of wings forming achute beneath said opening, means to maintain said wings in predetermined adjusted position, ajlever for changing the position of said wings to vary the opening at will, and

10. In a device of the character stated, an automatic weighing device comprising arreceptacle located below said gate to. receive material therefrom, and means for automatically discharging the material from said receptacle in predetermined measured quantities, in combination with a gate tor discharging into the weighing device comprising a plate having an opening therethrough, a plurality offwings forming a chute beneath said device for limiting the movement of said lever in one direction whereby said lever it' temporarily moved may be returned to proper adjusted position.
l1. In a device of the character stated, an automatic weighing ydevice comprising a receptacle located below said gate to receive material therefrom, and means for automatically discharging the material from said receptacle in predetermined measured quantities, in combination with a gate for delivering into theA weighing device comprising a plate vhaving an opening therethrough, a plurality of wingsforming a chute beneath said opening said wings being arranged in pairs one pair betweenthe other, spring means for maintaining the outer pair of. wings in contact with theinnei1 pair, regulating means connected to the inner pairxof wings to move both sets of wings tovary the opening, and holding means for maintaining said regulating device in adjustedv position.
12. In a device of the characterstated, an automatic weighing device comprising a receptacle located below said gateto receive material therefrom, and means tor automatically discharging ythe material from said receptacle in predetermined measured. quantities, in combination with a gate tor'delivering into the weighing Ydevice comprising a plate haring'an opening therethrough, a plurality of wings orming'a chutebeneatli said opening said wings being arranged in pairs one between the other, spring means for maintaining the outer pairoie wings in contact with the inner pair, rock spindles'connected respectively to each inner wing`l connecting means between said rock spindles tor transmitting movementy from one spindle to the other, a lever fixed'to one ot said rock spindles, a plate secured to said gate having a plurality of openings therein, a pin securedV said trip arm, a door suitably secured tosaid receptacle for opening and closing movement, i arm operatively connected to y a pendulum said .door and provided with means for engaging said catch to lock the door iii-closed position, and a trip finger fixed adjacent-said receptacle and adapted to be engaged by said` trip arm at a predetermined time to'release said catch, in combination with means lfor supplying material to said receptacle, and;
of. positions, and a stop iso means for balancing said receptacle to automatically control the time of actuation of said trip means whereby predetermined measured quantities of material are discharged from said receptacle.
14. In a device of the character stated, a receptacle divided into a plurality of compartments, a plurality of trip arms pivotally mounted respectively on said receptacle, adjustable trip fingers located adjacent the respective trip arms and arranged in the path of movement thereof, doors pivoted respectively at the bottom of each compartment, a pendulum arm operatively connected to both doors and provided with means for locking engagement with the respective trip arms, means for varying the relation between the respective trip arms and the trip ngers, and means for balancing said receptacle and permitting vertical movement for controlling the automatic delivery of a predetermined quantity of material.

In a device of the character stated, a support, a receptacle having a discharge opening, a scale beam fulcrumed upon the support and having a weight support iixed thereto at one side of its fulcrum and said scale beam connected to the receptacle on the other side of its fulcrum and also having a scale marking thereon beginning with Zero adjacent to the ulcrum and said marking extending along the beam away from the weight support, a main weight for the weight support, an auxiliary weight adjustable upon the scale beam to reduce the eilective counterbalancing action of the main weight, a door for controlling the discharge opening of the receptacle, a locking device for holding the door in closed position, trip mechanism for automatically releasing the locking device at predetermined times when the receptacle descends to allow the door to open and discharge the contents, and means above the receptacle for delivering the material thereto and permitting it to fall into the receptacle.
16. In a device of the character stated, a floating receptacle for receiving and discharging the materials in weighed quantities, a fulcrumed scale beam having the receptacle pivoted at one end, a main weight carried at the other end of the scale beam to counter-balance the receptacle when said receptacle is only partly loaded, an auxiliary counterweight adjustable on the scale beam on the end thereof opposite to that carrying the main counterbalance weight, said auxiliary counterweight to reduce the eiiectiveness of the main weight whereby a still lesser load counterbalances said regulation of the weight and counterweight being at all times less than the full weight oi' the material to be measured by an amount corresponding to the weight of material in the act of falling into the receptacle to constitute a part of the i'ull load, and means to control the supply to and discharge from the receptacle of the materials to be measured. 17. In a device of the character stated, a floating receptacle for receiving and discharging the materials in weighed quantities, afulcrumed scale beam having the receptacle pivoted thereto at one end and having at the other end a support for a main weight said scale beam having a scale beginning with Zero adjacent to the fulcrum point and with increasing weight numbers along said beam toward the receptacle, a main weight adapted to said scale beam support to counterbalance the receptacle when only partly loaded, and an auxilary weight adjustable on the scale beam to reduce the effectiveness of the main weight to compensate for the weight of the material falling into the receptacle during the discharge and after the receptacle has received a charge sufficient to overcome the counterbalance of the main weight, whereby a predetermined weight of material may be measured with accuracy and discharged.
