" @Iv mWIIIII Si@ NQ INVENTOFI.
FRED A. HAUSE, OF NORTH BESSEMEB., ENNSYLVANIA.
` rannte.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be itknown that I, FRED A. HAUsE,-a citizen of the United States ofvAmerica, residing at North Bessemer, county `of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certainV new and useful Improvements in Paddles, of which the following is a specification; 'f Y This invention relates to paddles for propelling canoes and boats and has `for its object the provision' of a paddle for such purposes, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with a sectional handle to provide for the convenient handling, carrying and storing of the paddle when not iny use.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a paddle with a sectional handle, and with the sections of the handle capable of being shifted to locking engagement with each other, to prevent the separation of the handle sections when the paddle is used.`
Further objectsof the invention are to provide a paddle for the purpose set forth which is simplein its construction and arrangement, strong,-durable, eiiicient in its use, readily assembled and 'inexpensive to manufacture. y j y l j With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and 'arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustratedin the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodimentof the invention, but itiis to be understood that changes, variations and modifications `can be `resorted to which come within the scope of theclaims" hereunto appended. l
1n the. drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the' several views-V Figure 1 is an elevation of af paddle in accordance with this invention. f'
Fig. 2 is a section on line 11-11, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line lll- 111, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a modified `form of lock between the handle sections.V
Referring to Figs.` 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings 1 denotes theblade and `2 and 3jthe` sections of the handle. The handle section 2 is an integral portion of the blade 1 and its free end is reduced as at 4 to provide a shoulder 5.
Mounted upon the reduced end 4, of the section 2, is a sleeve 6, which at one end Specification of Letters Patent."

abuts against the shoulder` 5, and at its other projects beyond the free terminus of the reduced end 4. The sleeve 6 intermediate its ends is formed with an opening 7 for a purpose to be presently referred to, and said sleeve 6 is secured to the reduced end 4, by a connecting element 8, in the form ofl a transversely extending rivet.v
1 The handle section 3 has a head 9 at one end and has its other end reduced to provide a cylindrical yextension 10, a tapering tongue or tenon 11, and a shoulder 12.
Mounted on the extension 10 and abutting against the shoulder 12, is a sleeve 13, provided at its inner end with a fiange 14. The
sleeve 13 at one end is flush with the free tudinal flat spring 17, which has its rear l end secured by a rivet 18a to the anged end of the sleeve 13. The forward end of the spring 17, has a lateral lug 18, which projects throu h an opening 19, formed in the sleeve 13. he groove 16 permits of the linward shifting of the spring 17 with respect to the extension 10.
`The reduced end 4 of the handle section 2, has a socket 20for`the reception of the tongue 11, when 'the handle sections are coupled together.V
The diameter of the sleeve 13, with respect to the inner diameter of the sleeve (i, is
such that the sleeve 13` will snugly fit the inner `face ofthe sleeve 6, to set up a fric tional clamp between said sleeveswhen the handle sections are connected together.
When the handle sections are coupledtogether the sleeve 6 is inclosed by: the sleeve 13,-and' abuts against the flange 14. The sleeve 6 is shifted so that its opening 19 will register with the opening 7 in the sleeve 13, whereby the lug 18 will project through the Vopening 7 and `the handle sections will be 'coupled together.
The spring 17, lug 18, openings 7 and 19 set up a latching device for coupling the handle sections together.
Referring to Fig. 4 the handle section carried by the blade is indicated at 21 and the ,..ofisa'id' sleeve. The outer` endl of the spring other handle section at 22. Ther section 21 is reduced to provide a cylindrical vextensionv 23, providing avshoulder-24,and mounted cn the extension 23, is a sleeve 25, havinga peripheral flange 26, at one end. The sleeve abutsagainst the shoulder 24 yand is 'se'" kcured tothe etension23-by a rivet 27 The sleeve 25 is flush at its outerend With,- the-V 29, has a lateral-lugl3b,y .which projects .throughj an openng;32,.in the sleeve 25. The y groove 28=perinitsof the inward shifting of 201" the spring'g29gvvith respec'trto the eXtension 23. v i
i 'Thephandle section 22 has a reduced end 3 3, to provide a shoulder 34, and inountedon saidfe'ndz33 is a -sleeve 35, which at onev end abuts against-the shoulder 34, and Y at its otherv endl proj eets beyond the free terminus oft-heend 33. The-,sleevev 35, intermediate its ends has an opening 36. jThegsleeve is connected to the section 22V bya'rivet"37. The dia'in'eter ofthe-sleeve 25,.,with respect to they inner diameter ofthe sleeve35,
. ijs such; 1thatthesleeve-25 will snugly fit the inner face-:ofthe sleeve 35 to set up a vfrictional clamp between said Sleeves When the handle sections are coupled.` together.
' connected together the Vsleeve 35 incloses the sleeve'25gand abuts against the flange 26. lThesleeve' 35-fis 'shifted so.v that the :opening .36,1 Will register with lthe opening-32, where- ,by thelug 3l, will project throughl the opening 36 and the handlel sections Willl be coutions, .one' of said Sectionsha-ving an eXtension* providedl Witha peripheral groove, a
