Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July it), 191?.
Continuation of application Serial No. 627,120, filed may 15, 1911. This application filed October 17, 1913.
' Serial No. 795,689.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Boon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Gearing; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to driving gearing, and more particularly to driving gearing for washing machines or the like, the principal object of the invention being to provide gearing for a motor driven machine wherein power may be transmitted from the motor to the cylinder or to a wringer, and wherein the wringer may be driven in either direction simultaneously with the actuation of the cylinder.
In accomplishing this object, I have provided improved details of structure the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a washing machine equipped with driving gearing constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. II is an enlarged side view of the gearing, showing the shipper head.
Fig. III is a view of the same parts, looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a sectional view on the line IVIV, Fig. II, including the hub of the belt wheel.
Fig. V is a horizontal section of the machine casing, and plan view of the gearing.
Fig. V1 is a side elevation of the casing, and vertical section of parts of the gearing, on the line VIVI, Fig. V.
Fig. VII is a perspective view of .a preferred type of Washing cylinder.
Fig. VIII is a detail view of the belt wheel hub, showing its driving cam.
Referring more in detail to the parts:
1 designates a machine casing, which is preferably supported on legs 2, and has a concaved bottom 3 for carrying a cylinder.
4 designates a cylinder, having a shaft 5 journaled within the casing 1, and a cover, which is hinged to the casing and 1S prefen ably flat at the top, so that it may serve as a table when the casing is closed.
Fixed to the forward end of the casing 1 is a wringer 7, which may be of any ordinary construction, except that the driving shaft 8 carries a sprocket wheel 9, instead of the usual crank.
Fixed on the cylinder shaft 5 (Fig. VII) is a gear wheel 10, and meshing with wheel 10 is a pinion 11, which is fixed on a shaft 12, that is journaled in the sides of the easing 1 and extends outwardly therefrom through a bearing 13, preferably formed integral with a plate 14 that is fixed to the outer face of said casing.
Revolubly mounted on shaft 12 is a gear Wheel 15, which constantly meshes with a gear wheel 16 that is revolubly mounted on a stub shaft 17, which is also journaled in the plate 14.
On the outer face of gear wheel 16 is a boss 18 (Fig. II) having a radial face 19, and having an aperture 20 in its outer face.
Revolubly mounted on the outer end of shaft 17 is a .belt wheel 21 having an inwardly directed hub 22. On the hub 22 is a boss 23, having an aperture 24- (Fig. VIII), and projecting circumfcrentially from the inner end of the hub into position for engaging the radial face of the boss 18 on the gear wheel 16, is a boss 25.
26 designates a coil spring which is carried on the wheel hub 22 and has its respective ends projected into the aperture 24 of the hub boss 23 and the aperture 20 of the gear wheel boss 18, so that when the belt wheel is revolved, the inner end of the spring is held by inertia of the transmission mechanism and parts connected therewith, and the spring tensioned until the driving boss 25 comes in contact with the radial face of the boss 18 on the gear wheel 16, and the shock, which would otherwise result from contact of the solid bosses cushioned by the spring.
lhe belt wheel 21 is connected with a belt wheel (not shown) on a motor 27, preferably of an electrical type and controlled through a switch 28 that may be located conveniently for the operator of the machine.
It is apparent that when the motor is active, the gear wheels 15 and 16 will be revolved idly on the shafts 12 and 17, under the conditions described.
sition.
a boss 57 on 29 designates a sleeve which is fixed on the outer end of the shaft 12 by a pin 30, and is provided with a feather groove 31.
Slidably mounted on the sleeve 29 is a disk 32, which is confined to the sleeve by a pin 29 and held against revoluble movement thereon by a feather 33 that is projected into the sleeve groove 31; the inner face of the disk being provided with a boss 35, which is adapted to engage a boss 34 on the outer face of the gear wheel 15 when said disk is moved inwardly on the sleeve 29,.
In the periphery of disk 32 is a groove 36, into which are projected the arms 37 of a shipper head 38, having a hub 39 slidably mounted on a stub shaft 40, which isalso carried on a plate 14, and projecting laterally from plate 14 is a bracket 41 having apertures therein forming bearings for the rods '42 and 43.
lhe inner end of the rod 42 is provided with an upturned lever 44 which is connected with the hub 39 by a link 45, and its outer end has a cranked part 46, which is connected with a bar 47 that projects through a slot 48 in a guide bracket 49, on the machine frame; the outer end of the bar being provided with a weighted handlejll, and its under edge with notches 51 and 52 for receiving the lower edge of the slotted portion of said bracket, so as to lock the rod 42 and shipper head 38 in idle or active po- It is apparent that when the disk 32 is moved over into position for locking engagement with the gear wheel 15, power is transmitted from said gear wheel through the disk and sleeve 29 to the shaft 12, and through the shaft and gear wheels 11 and 10 to the cylinder, so that the operation of the cylinder is controlled by the position of the bar 47.
Revolubly mounted on the hubbed part 53 of the plate 14, forms part of the bearing for the shaft 12,'is a sprocket wheel 55, having a hub 54, and integral with the outer end of the hub is a plate. 56, having its outer face. I
Slidably mounted on the extended hub 15 of the gear wheel 15, is a disk 58, having an integral feather 59, that is slidable with- 57 on the plate 56, so that when the disk 58 is moved over toward the plate, the bosses will engage drive the plate 56 and.
sprocket wheel 55.
Also slidably mounted on the shaft 46 '88 is moved into the Revolubly mounted on the stationaryshaft 17 is a hub 67, having an integral sprocket wheel and plate members and 69 thereon, similar to the corresponding parts on the hub 54; the plate being provided with a boss 7 (liter operatively engaging a transverse member, presently described,
Slidably mounted on the hub 16 of the gear wheel 16 is a disk 71, having a feather '72 projected into a groove 73 in the hub 16, so that the disk may move longitudinally on the hub, but be held thereto and made revoluble therewith; the feather being extended, as is the feather 59 on the disk 58,
' so that it may be projected into a recess 74 in the gear wheel 16 to drive the disk when the connection is made.
The disk 71 also has a boss 75 for engaging the boss 70 on a plate 69, so that the plate 67, with its sprocket wheel, may be driven with the disk 71 when the bosses are in engagement.
lhe disk 71 has a peripheral groove 76, containing the arms 77 of a shipper head 7 8, the hub 79 of which is slidably mounted on a stub shaft 86 that'is carried by the plate 14, below and parallel with the shaft 4,
Fixed on the handle 43 is a hub 81, having an upwardly directed arm 82 provided with a pin 83 that projects into a groove 84 in the hub 63 of the shipper head 64, and having a downwardly projected arm 85 provided with a pin 86, that projects into a groove '87 in the hub of the shipper head 7 8, so that when the rod is turned in one direction, the disk 58 will be moved into locking engagement with the sprocket 68, and vice versa The rod 43 has a cranked arm 88 on its I outer end, which extends upwardly and has a handle 89, the cranked arm being" adapted to yieldingly engage any one of the three notches 91, 92 and 93 in the bracket 94, for holding either of the sproc wheels 55 or 58 into or out of driving relation with the a ringer.
It is apparent that cranked arm 1, the upper outwardly to position, and the he moved in- I S'and 70 will shipper head will be shift the disk 58 to lower shipper head t wardly so that t lock and move t e sprocke wheels 55 the sprocket wheel $3 ameans When the arm 88 is moved into the inner notch 93, the position of the shipper heads and disks is reversed, so that the parts are driven in the opposite direction and the wringer is run backwardly.
When the middle notch 92 of the bracket 94 engages the arm 88 the disks are neutral and the wringer remains idle.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the gearing may be considered as comprising two individual transmission units, having constant driving connection through the loose gear wheels 15 and 16, and which may be operated separately or simultaneously through the clutch connections; one of the units comprising the members mounted on the spindle 17, and including the belt wheel 21 through which power from the motor is applied to this unit and through the gear wheel 15 to the other unit, and the second unit comprising the parts mounted on the shaft 12 and including the small gear 11 for actuating the cylinder.
To illustrate use of the gearing in connection with a washing machine; when soiled clothes are placed in'the cylinder and the motor started in operation by turning the switch 28, the gearing operates idly until the bar 47 is moved to bring the outer notch into its-locking position, thereby shifting the disk 32 so as to lock the shaft 12 to the gear wheel 15. The cylinder is then revolved and continues its operation until the bar is shifted back to disconnect the disk 32 from the drive gear 15. The lid of the cylinder may then be lifted and the wringer started in operation by moving the arm 88 into the outer notch 91, and shifting the lower disk 71 into engagement with the sprocket member 68. The wringer is then operated forwardly so that the clothes may be wrung from the cylinder into a receptacle that may be placed on the brackets 96-on the frame legs 2. 4
When the clothes have been removed from the cylinder, the dirty water may be drawn off and a fresh batch supplied to the cylinder. The cylinder may again be started in operation by manipulation of the bar 47 and, if desired, the clothes may be rinsed and then wrung back through the wringer onto the table 6; the double gearing making it possible to operate the cylinder and wringer simultaneously.
