Description
WILLIAM WEAVEB.
""P nt in Devices for Lowering and Rai i Steam Boat Chimneys. N0. 123,314. P atentedl an.30,1872.
' Inventor NVitncsscs: I
Mam) Man/MD 25 dk M Attorneys.
TATES WILLIAM WEAVER, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND STEPHEN STUCKY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR LOWERING AND RAISING STEAMBOAT CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,314, datcd January 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WEAVER, of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steamboat Chimneys; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for lowering and raising steamboat chimneys, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and opera tion, referrin g to the annexed drawing, in which-- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a front view of a steamboat-chimney with my raising and lowering device.
A and B represent the two parts of a steamboat-chimney hinged together on one side and held on the other side by a catch, 0, in properupright position. Near the upper end of the top part A, on the same side as the hinge, are two ears, to a, between which a rod, 1), is pivoted. The lower end of this rod is pivoted to a slide, E, which moves up and down on a T- E is provided with small friction-rollers ii,
which bear against the surface of the rail 1) Near the upper end of the lower part B is a pulley, d, a short distance below the same is a pin or eye, 6, and on the slide E is a pulley, f. A rope or chain, h, is attached to the pin or eye e, then passes down and around the pulley f, then up and around the pulley d, and to a windlass, G, arranged at any suitable place. By releasing the spring-catch (J, and by a rope attached to the top of the chimney, the upper part A is readily lowered to about a horizontal position, and when in this position the rod D holds it perfectly steady, the slide E having, of course, moved downward on the rail 1). For raising the chii'nney itis only necessary to turn the Windlass G, when the slide E is drawn upward, and, by the rod 1), causes the top part A to swing into an upright position and be locked by the catch 0.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the hinged chimney A B, of the slide E, rod D, rail 1), pulleys df, rope or chain It, and a Windlass, G, all constructed to operate substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of December, 1871.
WILLIAM WEAVER.
