To alien/10m it may romw'n: i
Be it known that 1, CHARLES lvlc-Knnvnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Vehicle-Lamps, oi which the following is a specification. 4
My present invention relates to a lamp and particularly to a lamp adapted for use in a motor vehicle. So far as I am aware the lamps commonly employed on motor vehiclesincluding automobiles, trolley cars and the like, are made with a reflector adapted to receive a socket and, an electric lam p bulb. in this form of lamp irrespecthe ot the position the bulb may assume, the filaments of the bulb are visible and the light reflected by the reflector oftentimes causes such a glare as to make it impossible well as around a portion of the socket, and a cap member preferably comprising a rim adapted to be secured to the edge of the cup and a disk provided with an aperture to receive the point of the lamp bulb so that the cup is supported and maintained in-position upon the lamp socket and by the said cap, the disk of which makes it impossible to view directly the filament of the lamp bulb while the cup member is so constructed as to diffuse and direct the light to the amount and in the direction required by the law in many places.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a central cross section f a vehicle lamp made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cup and cap in position relatively to the lamp bulbL Referring to the drawing, 10 indicates a reflector which may be suitably secured in any form of casing commonly emplpyed in lamps for motor vehicles. At the 'base of the reflector the same is provided With a lamp' socket 11 which may be fixed in position as shown in Fig. 1 or made adjustable to position within predetermined limits to regulate the focus of the light. As is cus tomary an electrical lamp bulb 12 is employed. This lamp bulb is provided with a base 13 having oppositely disposed pins 1% adapted to enter the slots 15 in the lamp socket .11 to secure the lamp bulb in place and make the necessary electrical connections for lighting the lamp.
Together with these features which heretofore h i/e been commonly employed in vehicle lamps, I employ a cup member 16 made of suitable glass or other sufliciently transparent material. The base of the cup member 16 is provided with an opening 17,
adapted to receive the end of the larripv socket 11. The periphery of the cup member 16 adjacent the edge thereof is preferably ribbed indicated at 18, while that portion 19 of the cup adjacent the base is plain; The object of this disclosed in my co,-
pending application, Serial No. 107,078,
filed July 1, 1916,;is to d'll'use the rays of light from the lam p, and to direct them immediately in front of the lampvvithin a predetermined scope depending upon the area of the plain surface at the base of the cup member, it being apparent that the rays of light'passing through the ribbed por tion of the/cup member will be generally diii'used by the reflector, while the rays of light passing through the base of the cup member will he reflected through the same again immediately in limit of the-lamp.
In my present invention I also employ a although it inay be constructed of other suitable material. This cap member con); prises a rim 21, adapted to lit and be connected to the edge of the cup member as well asa disk 22, provided with a central opening 21-). to receive the point bulb. The disk 22 is connected to the rim 21 by means of suitably spacedarms 25 'or .adjacent the edge thereof in order to secure the cap in position, it being apparent as hereinhe-fore stated that the cup member is supported and maintalned in'position by cap member 20, preferably made of metal,
24: of the lamp 7 and having an openin the lamp socket, the cap and the bulb. It will also be understood that when the socket is made adjustable to position it may be moved toward the reflector until the cup contacts with the reflector and this also assists in maintaining the cup in place.
.I claim as my invention:
1. In a vehicle lam and in combination with a lamp bulb an' a socket therefor, a transparent cup fitting over said lamp bulb, in the base thereof to receive the said soc at, and a device secured t0 the edge of the cup to prevent the direct vision of the filament in the lamp bulb, and to co-act With the lamp socket and bulb in maintaining the cup in position.
2. In a vehicle lamp and in combination witha lamp bulb and a socket therefor, a glass cup fitting over said lamp bulb and having an opening in the base thereof to receive a portion of the said lamp socket, and acap securedigtoi the edge of the said cup to prevent theidirect vision of the filament in the lamp blilbt'ieand to co-act with the lamp socket andybulb in maintaining the cup in position 3. In a vehicle lamp and in combination, with a lamp bulb and a socket therefor, a glass cup fitting over said lamp bulb and having an opening in the base thereof to receive a portion of the said lainp socket, a
rim secured to the said glass cup, and a disk connected to'the said rim and adapted to prevent the direct vision of the lamp bulb filament, and also to co-act with the said lamp socket and bulb to maintain the glass cup in position.
4;. In a vehicle lamp and in combi 1ation with areflector, an electric lamp bulb and a socket therefor, a glass cup fitting over said electric lamp bulb, and having an opening in the base thereof adapted to receive a portion of the lamp socket, a disk having an aperture therein to receive the point of the electric lamp bulb, a rim adapted to be secured to the edge of the glass cup, and means connecting the said disk and rim.
5. In a vehicle lamp and in combination with a reflector, an electric lamp bulb and a socket therefor, a glass cup fitting over said electi ic lamp bulb, and having an opening in the base thereof to receive a portion of the said lamp socket, a disk having a central aperture to receivethe point of the electric lamp bulb, a rim, means connecting the disk and rim, and lugs on the inner side of the said rim adapted to engage the edge of the glass cup to secure the said rim and disk in position thereon.
Signed by me this 21st day of September, 1916.
CHARLES MCKEEVER.
