. To ali whom it may concern:
- Be' it known that'l, EDWARD F. OLSON, a
citizen'of the United States, residin at Berlin, in the county of La Mo'ure andtate ofNorth Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Watches, of which th'e'following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in watches and more particularly to Watches in which provision is made for illuminating thewatch'dial. The primary object of the inv'en t1on 1s to provide a'watch of this character having an'incandesc'ent bulb mounted in a socket formed in the bezel of the watch. and having connection with a source of electrical energyarranged beneath the cover on the back of the watch-"and controlled through the medium of a. switch rotatably mounted on the watch stem and by means of which the circuit between the source of energy and Iain ma be closed to momentarily illuf minate't e dual of the watch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a switch of novel construction which is mounted upon the winding stem housing of the watch in such a manner that communication may be establishedjbetween themcandescent lamp and the source of electrical energy by partially rotating theswltch in .either direction.
A further object of the invention is to provide the watch cover with novel means for retaining therein the source of electr cal energy for supplying the illuminating ower for the lamp mounted within a socket ol'med in the bezel.

Referring noiv to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1. designates a watch of the type now in common use, the casing 2 of which is .provided with the usual housing 3 in which 1s received the winding and setting stem having a crown 4, said housing having formed therein between its ends an annular groove 5 arranged adjacent an opening 6 in the casing 2, said opening receiving therein a plug of insulating material 7 having mounted therein a contact member 8 which extends exteriorly of the casing 2.
Mounted to turn, in an annular groove 5 on the housing 3 is aswitch 9, said switch being in the form of a ring which is held by the walls of the groove against longitudinal movement on the housing, said ring having arranged upon one face thereof spaced contact fingers 10 and 11, said fingers being normally held spaced from thecoiitact member 8 through the medium of a spring 11, one terminal of which is "connected with the housing at a point diametricall opposite the connection of the otheif'ternnnal of the spring with'the switch 9, said-spring serving to hold the switch 9 firmly engaged with a wall of the groove to prevent casual turning of the switch upon the housing." When the switch is partially rotated .iponthe hous ing 3 to bring either-of the contact fingers into engagement with the member 8, the spring upon. the release of the pressure from the switch will restore the same to its normal position.
The casing 2 has arranged therein in advancc'of the watch mechanism a lettered dial 12- underlymg the crystal 13 which is connected lwith the casinq 2 by a bezel 14 having formed therein a amp socket 12') receiving an incandescent bulb 16 arranged between the numerals 12 and 1 on the dial and between the dial and crystal 13.
The back of the casing 2 is closed by a cover 17 arranged upon the inner face of which are spaced spr ng arms 17 receiving th'erebetween and retaining upon the cover a suitable source of electrical energy 18 surh as a battery or the like, said battery being preferably circular in shape so that when the cover 17 is in closed position, the battery ,will lie wholly within the cover and in no way interfere with the mechanism arranged within the casing 2.
Suitable conducting members for convey ing the electrical energy from the battery 18 to the lamp 15 are arran -d within the casing 2 and designated by t 1e numerals 19 and 20, the conductor 19 havin a connection with the lamp 15 and a bin ing post on the battery 18 while the conductor 20 which is also connected with the battery 18 has one end thereof awed through the plug 7 and secured to t 6 contact member 8 thereon, thus enabling the electrical circuit to be closed when one of the contact fingers 10 on the switch-9 are brought into contact with the member 8, so that the lamp 15 will be illuminated.
Through the above described arrangement of parts when it is desired to illuminate the lamp, the switch 9 which is normally held in an open position by the spring 11 is turned on the housing 3 until one 01' the fingers 10 is brought into contact with the member 8 at which time the current'from the battery 18 may be used to energize the lamp 15 so that as long as the switch remains in a closed position, the lampwill be illuminated and upon the release of the switch, the same will be moved to open position by the spring 11.
From the foregoing description; taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a watch has been provided in which the dial thereof may be momentarily illuminated when found desirable and with the illuminatin mechanism so arranged with relation to t e watch easing that the said mechanism will be protected thereby.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is: v
A watch having a winding stem housing having an annular groove therein, a ring mounted to turn in said groove, a springengaged with said housing and ring normally holding said ring firmly engaged with a wall of the groove to prevent casual rotation of the ring, an electrical circuit in which said ring and'housing are arranged including a contact plate extending exteriorly of the watch, and s aced fingers depending from the un'dersit e of said rmg'to engage said contact when the ring is turned.
