METAL-TUBE EXPANDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led October 1G, 1914, Serial No. 866,976. Renewed February 19, 1917. Serial No. 149,657.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK LAwLoR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Q47 Bellechasse street, in the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metalrlube Expanders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in metal tube expanders, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
'Ihe invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the tube is splayed at the outer end to receive the heading during the operation of expansion.
rIhe objects of the invention are to devise a finishing tool in the installation of water tubes in steam boilers and the like, to eliminate the use of heavy hammers in splaying the tube ends, thus avoiding fracture and displacement, and generally to provide a simple and useful tool.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view, partially in section to disclose the features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 1 2 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the device looking in the direction as indicated by the arrow 3.
Fig. 4; is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate corre, sponding parts in each ligure.
Referring to the drawings, A is a hollow cylindrical shaped member having the inner wall a tapered from end to end, and longitudinal slots through the wall thereof for the expansion rollers, said member A being adapted to be inserted in the tube T to be expanded.
B is an annular shoulder rigid with the member A, intermediate of the length thereof, having its inner surface slopino away from said member A and the slots dividing said shoulder into sections, said sections being between the slots b in the member A. CZ are recesses in each section of the shoulder B, for the reception of the rollers D, the .lower end of said rollers sinking slightly into the member A, while the upper end of said rollers are retained in position by the ring E, secured to the shoulder A by the screws g, said shoulder being slightly shouldered at c, to lit to the corresponding recess 7 in the ring E.
It will now be seen that with rollers introduced in the roller slots b and a suitable tapered pin I inserted in the hollow of the member A, the tube may be fully expanded to the edges of the hollow in the head plate Il of the boiler or other receptacle, but such device is already known, and it is for the purpose of splaying the outer end of the pipe that this invention has been devised, and to do this, rollers at a considerable angle to the feed member A, are mounted on the shoulder, and this has the effect of coincidently turning the edges of the pipe outwardly and finishing it off ready to receive the bead.
It must be understood, though one way has been explained ofl mounting the supplementary rollers for finishing the boiler tubes at the ends, many other ways may be used and the construction carried out differently without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
In a metal tube expander, a hollow cylindrical shaped member having a longitudinally tapered inner wall, roller slots therethrough, an annular rigid shoulder and slots in said shoulder dividing it into sections partitioning said roller slots and a removable ring rigidly secured to said shoulder, a plurality of rollers in said shoulder slots and a tapered pin engaging said rollers from the interior of said hollow member.
Signed at the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this fourteenth day of October, 1914:.
FRANK LAWLOR.
