Description

S. E. BRUNCK.
PLATE 0R PAN LIFTER. APPLICATION FILED DEC-14, I915.
Patented July 10, 1917.
gnme'ntoz SAMUEL E. BRUNCK, OF CORYVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
lPLATE OB, PAN LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July ll), 1917.
Application filed December 14, 1915. Serial R 0. 66,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. BRUNGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coryville, in the county of McKean, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate or Fan Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in plate or pan lifters, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character adapted for removing hot plates or pans from stove tops or the ovens of stoves.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the user can easily and quickly engage the device with a hot pan or plate, and lift the same without the danger of burning the hand.
With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dcvice in use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device in its inoperative position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 2.
The device consists of a pair of jaw frames 1, each of which consists of side bars 2, which have their lower ends integrally connected by the outwardly curved jaws 3, while their upper ends terminate in right angle extensions 4, said extensions being engaged by the wooden hand grips 5.
Having its ends fixed in the bars.2 of one of the frames is a rod 6, and pivotally connected thereto are the bars 2 of the other frame. A coil spring 7 encircles the rod 6 and has its terminals 8 engaged with the extensions 4, said spring having its central .portion provided with a loop 9, the purpose of which will appear later. It will be of course understood that the terminals 8 engage the extensions of the frame which pivotally engages the rod 6.
A U-shaped clip 10 has its legs clamped in tight engagement with the central portion of the rod 6, said clip being engaged by the loop 9 of the spring, whereby when the grips 5 are grasped and pressed toward each other the spring 7 will be under tension, but soon as pressure has been relieved from the grips it is obvious that the spring will act to force the grips 5 and aws 3 away from each other, whereby the frames will assume the positions as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when it is desired to use the de vice it is only necessary for the operator to grasp the grips 5, and force the same toward each other, whereupon the aws will move toward each other until they grip the pan or plate, and under the flange thereof, after which the plate can be lifted as desired.
What is claimed is A plate lifter comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw frames including side bars having angular extensions, a transverse rod for connecting said frames, a spring coiled about said rod and having a loop formed in its intermediate portion and its extremities engaging the angular extensions of said side bars whereby to. normally retain said jaws in a spread or inoperative position, a clip secured centrally of the rod and engaged by said loop for placing said spring under tension when said angular extensions are moved toward each other, and hand grips carried by said angular extensions.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL E. BRUNGK.
Witnesses:
