DONALD M. FERGUSON, 013 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL MOTORS GOM- PANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF NEW JEBSEY.
AUTOMOBILE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD M. FERG SON a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automobiles, and declare My invention relates to automobiles and an object of my improvements is to provide an improved construction of the running gear adjacent to the rear axle, and especially to provide an improved construction where a chain is the driving means.
I secure this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which, m
Figure 1, is an elevation partly, in section of an apparatus embodying my invention and so'much of an automobile as is necessary .to Illustrate its connectiontherep with.
Fig. 2, isa plan view ofthe same. I
Fig. 3, is a sectional detail view showing the construction adjacent to the end of the rear axle.
a indicates the frame work of an automobile. is the casing for the rear axle. c is the casing for the equalizing gear formed integral with, or rigidly united to, the casing 1). d d are the driving wheels. eis a brake drum which is rigidly secured by bolts in the usual way, one to each of the wheels 03. f is a sleeve journaled upon the casing '11 at its end and having a seator base '11 upon which the spring 9 may be secured by clips in the usual way. -Thus the springs g are rigidly secured to the sleeves f f. 0 (Fig.

tical movement of the frame and in doing this may move independent of the sleeves f f and the springs 93 The torque of the brakes is taken immediately by the springs g and radius "rods 01..
What I claim is:
1. In an automobile, a casing .for the equalizing gearing, a chain boot secured to said casing and pivoted at its end remote frdm said casing to a support on the frame of the automobile, a casing for the rear axle integral with the casing for the equalizing gearing, a sleeve upon the end of said axle casing and angularly movable thereon, and a body-supporting spring. secured to said sleeve. 7
\ 2. In an automobile, a casing for the equalizing gearing, a chain boot secured to said calsingyand pivoted at its end remote "from said casing to a support on the frame of the automobile, a. casing for the rear axle integral with the casing for the equalizing gearing, a sleeve upon the" end of said axle casing and angularly movable thereon and a body-supporting spring secured to said sleeve, and a brake mechanism, said sleeve being connected to a art of said brake brake.
mechanism so as to receive the torque of the 3 y p V 95 4 In testimony whereof, I- sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses. The casing c is provided with an opening .9 at the back thereof having a cover It wh ch V oNALn M. FERGUSON. Witnesses:
