Be it known that LLOUIS NAGLEE BRUNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 7 Bellerivestrasse, Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stopper Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to the manufacture of bottle Stoppers, especially such as have flat or rectangular heads, and relates more particularly to the method of forming the rough blank casting or molded piece from which the finished stopper is produced.
It is found that if the head of the rough blank or stopper is of a shape other than circular, such as when a flat head is employed it becomes diflicult to properly secure the same exactly central in a revolving chuck or holder, and this causes considerable trouble especially when automatic turning` machinery for turning or truing the stoppers is being employed. This is particularly the case for instance, when it is desired to produce interchangeable stoppers, that is to say Stoppers which are trued up separately (all to exactly the same size) by means of a carborundum, diamond or other device, and will fit any one of a number of correspondingly turned or trued bottle-mouths. Such a process serves therefore instead of the ordinary process of grinding each stopper into its bottle mouth, according to which each stopper will only lit one bottle properly.
Now according vto this invention, means are provided of a simple and effective kind whereby the stopper can be easily and accurately fitted in its holder or chuck for the purpose of turning or truing it.
To this end there is formed on or integrally with the stopper, during the molding or pressing, a circular flange or disk, to serve as a holder or knob which can readily be secured in a chuck or turning holder and can be easily broken off or detached after the stopper has been trued, turned or ground.
This disk or circular flange is formed eX- actly co-aXial in the molding or pressing of the blank or rough stopper itself, and so will insure the eXact ccntralizing of the stopper, and enable the latter to be turned and trued as desired, with great exactitude. The dotted line in Figs. 3 and 4c shows the line of contact of the two parts of the mold, the article being preferably molded diagonally as it were.
The narrow end of the neck or connecting piece is arranged, in the example shown, toward and central with the .narrow end of the stopper, so that the `junction between the two at the point e can easily be snapped off close to or flush with the stopper without damaging the latter, when it is desired to detach the stopper itself after the same has been turned or trued to the eXact shape.
As the narrow end of the cone or neck piece l is considerably less in diameter than the narrow end of the stopper body or plug where it is attached thereto, the turning or truing device, such as a carborundum wheel, as it travels to and fro along the stopper body or plug a, can move freely out beyond the narrow end of the same, as it can also do over or beyond the opposite or wide end thereof, to insure accurate finishing of the surface right up to the very end.
l't may be mentioned that with the improved system of forming the stopper blank, the ordinary lead or gate (viz. the piece f corresponding to the aperture through which the glass or metal is run in) may as in the example shown be connected to the center of the disk or ange c at the opposite side of course to that on which the stopper and cone piece are situated. The gate or lead f might however be brought in at the other end and be connected to the stopper head and the junction be ground oif smooth after e other end of the plug portion substantially as described.
