. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July in, ieiv.
Application filed ember 7, 1915. Seria1No. 54,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL S. I-IAnMsEN, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of La Jara, Gonejos county, Colorado, have invented a new and useful Binder Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for removing morningglory or pea vines and the like from the divide board of a binder.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved cutter in the form of a shear mounted on the divide board of a binder and adapted to be operated from the drivers seat to cut away and remove rangling weeds such as morning-glory vines and pea vines.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a binder illustrating my improved attachment in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing a portion of a binder equipped with my improvement.
In the construction and mounting of the device as shown the numeral 10 designates the platform, 11 the reel, 12 the seat, 13 the divide-board, 14. the wind-break board and 15 a supporting wheel of a reaper and binder which may be of any suitable construction and having either a right or left hand cut. A stationary cutter blade 16 is fixed to the forward and upper end portion of the divide board 13 in any suitable manner, and is beveled on its upper margin which is preferably coincident with or projecting slightly above the upper margin of said divide board. A cutter blade 17 is hinged intermediate of its ends by a bolt 18 or screw to the stationary blade 16 and divide board 13, and is beveled on its lower margin to cooperate with said stationary blade as a scissor or shear. The pivoted blade 17 is formed with an eye 19 at its rear end and said eye and the rear end portion of said blade are formed relatively large and heavy so that the rear end tends to fall by gravity to normally retain the scissor in open position as shown. A rope 20 or cord is fixed removably at one end to the eye 19 and passes upwardly over a direction pulley 21 carried by a bracket 22 fixed to the divide board 13. The rope or cord 20 then passes the binder, behind the windbreak board 14,
and in an upward direction to a point adjacent the drivers seat 12, preferably having its end attached to a loop or hook 26 can ried by the seat post.
In countries and regions where morningglories, peas and the like are prevalent, con siderable diiiiculty is encountered in cutting the small grain on account of the fact that these vines accumulate on the binding machine, and especially on the divide board. It is necessary under such conditions for the driver to frequently dismount and pull the accumulated vines from the forward end of the divide board, or to have an attendant accompany the machine for this purpose.
t is my purpose to overcome this difficulty, and in practical use of my improvement the device is mounted as shown and described, and whenever a bunch of vines accumulates on the forward end of the divide board the driver will reach down and grasp the end of the rope 20 and by pulling thereon will oscillate the scissor blade 17 and cause it to approach the stationary blade 16 and sever any vines which have clung thereto and to the front end of the divide board. The severed vines will then drop to opposite sides of the divide board, or be pulled therefrom by the continued advance of the ma chine, and in this manner the divide board may be kept clear of vines without stopping the machine or requiring the attendance or services of a person to pull them off manually. As soon as draft is released from the cord or rope 20 the overbalancing of the rear end of the blade 17 will cause the scissors to assume the open position in readiness to receive and cut another bunch of vines.
In case a field of grain is being out where vines are not prevalent the rope 20 may be removed temporarily.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a binder or the like having a divide board, a stationary blade mounted on the margin of said divide board, a blade secured by a horizontal pivot to said divide board and cooperating with said stationary blade, said pivoted blade being overbalanced' at its rear end, and a draft appliance adapted to operate said pivoted blade against the overbalancing thereof.
2. In a binder or the like having a divide board, a stationary blade fixed to said divide board, a blade pivoted on: a horizontal axis to said divide board adjacent said stationary blade, said pivoted blade being overbala-nced at its rear end and formed with an eye, and a cord fixed at one endto said eye and leading to a point adjacent the drivers seat.
3. In a binder or the like having a divide board and a driver s seat, a stationary-blade fixed to said divide board, a blade pivoted intermedi te of its ends on said divide board adjacent said stationary blade, said pivoted blade being overbalanced at its rear end so that it is normally in open position relative to said stationary blade,a direction pulley carried by said divide board above the rear end of said pivoted blade, and a draft appliance fixed at one end to the rear end of said pivoted blade, leading upwardly CARL s.
