VBE-CUTTING PROJECTILE.
Application filed April 26, 1917.
adapted lor cutting away wire obstructions,
the same acting in combination with the ordinary projectile propelled by the ordnance used.
The principal object ot' the invention is to provide a device adapted4 to be engaged with the inuzzlL` of the gun and received upon the projectile when it is discharged, and carried by it to the point ot attack, where the cutting elements are caused to engage with the wire or other entanglements, piercing, cutting and dcniolishing the same.
This object is'attained by the novel combination of parts and processes hereafter des ribod and shown in the accompanying drawings. forming a material part of this specification. and in whichz- Figure l is a perspective view of a gun, cutter` and projectile. indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. Q is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the cutter, indicating its engagement with the muzzle oi' the gun, and Fig. 3 a perspectiveriew o'l' the cutter in detail.
In Fig. l of the drawings, the gun or cannon l() is disclosed. the wire ience. obstruction or entanglement and the usual projectile 12, all of which are such as are commonly used.
The invention is comprised of ahollow skeleton, partially cylindrical. partially conical, having a plurality of bands 'lll ol internal diameter suited to the projectile or shell l. the bands being held in spaced relation by longitudinall v` disposed bars 15.
which may be ernbent convergingly point l?, in which any number, tour. ot" ployed-v the same being to form a sharp, conical is cone seat element 18 suited to receive the Specification of Letters Patent.

extreme point of the projectile, the oars he ing secured to the bands by rivets i6 as arey also an equal number of hook-like wing ele ments 20 at the base of the skeleton fraaie, thei; outer ends being bent arcuately and provided with ,an interior corrugated sharp edge 22, the Shanks 22S engaging resiliently with ythe extreme end or muzZleiOf the gun 10.
In operation. the gun being loaded as usual, the skeleton-cutter frame is pressed upon the muzzle, adhering by friction ot' the arms 20, until internal 4contact is made with it by the projectile 1&2 at the time ol: its discharge, causing its separation from the muzzle and carrying it to the marl', indicated in Fig, 1.
By reason of the symnietry of thc cutter, which is balanced upon :r central axis, the aim and trajectory oit' the projectile is un affected.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that simple and eil'ective device has been present ed for the purpose set `forth and that the same is believed to be ot' przuztical applica tion.
Having thus described my invention` what claim as new, and desire to secure by LetF tersPatent, is:--
l. In a device of the class described` the combination with a plurality ot' rings suited to the contour of a projectile, bars rigidly engaged at spaced inter 'als trans-- versely of said ring, said bars being brought to an acute point, and a plurali y of hook-like cutters engaged with said bars, said cutters having a shank engageahle will; the muzzle of a gun.
2. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a plurality oi' siacl d rines adapted to encircle a projectile, opposite disposed, uniformly spaced bars secur transversely to said rings, hook-like ments secured at the base oli said bars and to said rings, cutting means formed in. the interior, arcuate p rtion of said hooi; "i ments, and means or engaging l d to the muzzle ofc gun.
3.#nla device of the. .glass deeriliec the combination with a projectile jacket, comprising a plurality of spaoed'rings suited to receive the projectilaa plurality of longitudinally spaced bai-s seoured\at spaced intervals to each of said` rings, a point at the apex of said converging bars adapted to receive th point f a proiectile, and a1'- cuate cutter elements secured to said rings and said bars, said arcuate elements extending rearward of the spaced rings and adapted fo engage with the muzzle of a gun.
In testimony -whereof 1 have affixed my signature.
