To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE L. Venn runs, a citizenofthe United States, residing at Fort Atkinson, in the county of Jefferson and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pasteurizers and Ripeners, of which the following is a specification".
This invention relates to apparatus for ripening cream and for pasteurizing milk and cream.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction of apparatus of this class with a view to increased efiiciency and simplicity.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical central sectional view through an apparatus embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of an air intake valve. Figs. 3'
and 3 are sectional views of members used in an alternative construction. Fig. 4: is an end elevation of the apparatus, looking from the left-hand end of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmental view. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating the manner of attaching a pipe coil to the central shaft. Figs. 8 and 9 a are fragmental sectional views illustrating the connections between the central shaft and the feeder tubes.
The embodiment herein shown of my invention comprises a vat 1 which may be of any suitable construction. To the end 1 of the vat is secured a support 2 having a wall 3 that lies against the end wall 1. Upon the wall 3 is a sleeve4 extending through an opening in the end wall 1. The inner end of said sleeve is internally screwthreaded to receive an externally screwthreaded flange 5. To the wall 3 of the support 2 is fixed a gland 6 (Figs. 1 and 5) which projects within the sleeve 4 and serves to retain the packing material 7. The flange 5 and the gland 6 constitute a bearing for a tubular shaft or bearing nipple 8. The other end of saidshaft is rotatably supported in a bearing member 9 which is secured to a bracket 10 upon the support 2. Fixed upon the shaft 8 is a thrust collar 11 which bears against the portion 12 of the support 2.
At the oppositeend of the vat 1' is. a cirulation tank or ice box 13. In the end Wall 1 of the vat and the opposite wall of the ice box are bearings 14 and 15 to support a tubular shaft or bearing nipple 16.
The shafts 8 and 16 provide means for supporting and rotating a tempering element. Herein the tempering element is shown as comprising a central tube 17 and a spiral pipe coil 18. The central tube and the end of the central tube 17 is secured. Be
tween the sleeves 20 and 21 is a spiral tube 22 which communicates with said sleeves. To the end of said spiral tube is secured the adjacent end of the pipe coil 18. It will be seen that the central tube 17 and the mem bers l9 constitute a shaft having hollow ends which are connected to the bearing nipples or tubular shafts 8 and 16 and to the coil 18.
At suitable intervals the pipe coil 18 is connected to the central tube 17 by means of feeder tubes 23. At their outer ends the tubes 23 are connected to and communicate with the interior of the pipe coil; and at their inner ends the tubes 23 are screwed with the interior of the tube 17 through holes 26. It will be seen that the tubes 23 serve to convey liquid from the central tube 17 to the pipe coil at various points in the length of the coil, and also serve! to support the coil.
The ring 25 (Fig. 8) which is nearest the outlet end of the coilhas a web 25 and constitutes a plug to prevent the tempering fluid from flowing any farther through the tube 17. An opening 26 establishes communication between the central tube 17 and the feeder tube 23.
The means for rotating the shafts 8 and 16, the central tube 17 and the pipe coil 18 comprises a shaft 27 supported in two bearings 28 which are carried by the wall 3 of the support 2. The shaft 27 is supported at one end by a bearing 29 which is mounted upon the end wall 1 of the vat. The shaft 27 carries a tight pulley 30 and a loose pulley 31. A spiral pinion 32 on the shaft 27' meshes with a spiral gear wheel 33 on the shaft 8. 7
Means is provided to permit a circulation of hot or cold water through the rotary tempering element. Said means comprises an outlettitting which communicates with the tubular shaft 16. steam or liquid rising in the tube 56 and the body 49 will lift the valve member into contact with the seat 53.
In place of the pipe coil 18, a sheet-metal spiral disk coil similar to the one disclosed in Patent No. 790366 may be used. The opposite ends of such a spiral disk coil are connected to the tubular shafts 8 and 16 by means of' members 57 and 5% (Figs. 3 and 3 Each of said members comprises an i1";ternally-screW-threaded portion 58 to receive the end of the tubular shaft the coil with its central tube is v supportedupon and attached to the opposite ends of said members. I claimv as: my invention:
1. A pasteurizer or ripener having, in combinatioma vat, accntral tube, two alined tubular shafts journaled in the end walls of the. vat. for supporting and rotating the central tube, a spiral pipe coil communicating at each. end withthe central tube, rings located in spaced relation along the length of and within thecentra tube, each of said rings having a socket which communicates with the interior of the central tube, feeder tubes, each having one end seated in one of said sockets and the other end connected. to
the pipe coili for supporting the coil and establishing communication between the coil and the central; tube, a plug in the central: tube near one-end. thereof, a circulation tank arranged tov receive liquid from one; of the tubular shafts, a. pipe connecting the lower portion of the circulation tank with the other one of the tubularshafts, and means for rotating one of said tubular shafts.

5. A pasteurizer or ripener, having, in combination a central tube, a spiral pipe coil communicating at one end with said tube, a member fitting within said tube, said member having a socket which communicates with the interior of said tube, and a feeder tube having one end seated in said socket and the other end connected to the pipe coil.
6. A pasteurizer or ripener having, in combination, a vat, a shaft having hollow ends, hollow bearing nipples connected to said shaft and journaled in. the ends of said vat, a hollow coil connected at each end to the interiors of the hollow ends of said shaft, an ice box, the lower portion of said box having an outlet, a pipe connecting said outlet to one of said bearing nipples, a pipe con- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. nected to the other of said bearing nipples and arranged to deliver liquid to the upper portion of said tank and discharge the liquid upon ice placed in said ice box, and means for rotating said shaft whereby liquid is caused to circulate through the ice box and the coil.
7 A pasteurizer or ripener having, in combination, a vat, a shaft having hollow ends, hollow bearing nipples connected to said shaft and journaled in the ends of said vat, a hollow coil connected at each end to the interiors of the hollow ends of said shaft, a circulation tank, stationary means dis posed within said tank adjacent the bottom thereof and adapted to be immersed in the liquid contained therein to draw said liquid from the bottom of said tank, a pipe connecting said means to one of said bearing nipples, a pipe connected to the other of said bearing nipples and arranged to deliver liquid to the upper portion of said tank, and means for rotating said shaft whereby liquid is caused to circulate through the tank and the coil.
