The present invention is an improvement in that type of calculating devices constituting the subject-matter of my former Patent No. 1,060,997, dated May 6, 1913.

Some of the features of the calculating device or machine in which I have illustrated my present invention constitute the subject matter of my aforesaid Patent No. 1,060,997, dated May 6,1913. In order to afford a complete understanding of the subject-matter of the present invention it is only necessary to mention generally the features disclosed in said patent with which my present improvements are cooperatively combined and organized.
The machine includes a supporting frame or case 1 preferably composed of sheet metal. The said frame 1 is supported in an oblique position by legs 2, so that the entire upper surface of the machine will be supported in a plane approximately at right angles to the line of vision of the operator, thus bringing all of the essential parts of the machine to which the operator must refer, into plain view. The side wall or periphery 3 of the frame 1 is flared upwardlyand outwardly,-
and to the upper edge thereof is secured a ring 4;. The ring i is detachably secured to the upper edge of the wall 3 by 'screws 5, so that the machine may be conveniently separated into its constituent parts for any of the purposes necessitating such sc 'iaration.
The upper surface of the ring l is in an oblique plane substantially at right angles to the line of the vision or" the operator. and is divided into twelve spaces 6 conforming to the months of the year. iVithin each space is the name of the corresponding month.
A ring 7 is seated upon an inwardly eX- tended portion 8 in connection with the ring 5, and is retained permanently in position by means of removable screws 9 passing through .slots 10 in said ring 7 and engaged in the supporting part 8. The ring 7 is thus enabled to move, the degree of movement being limitedby'the length of the slots 10 through of the ring 7 is divided into'radial spaces by sultable denial-cations clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, and the days of the months are inscribed opposite said demarcations as indicated at 11 in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the illustration of the days of the months in Fig. 1 is conventional, and that the days for all of the months appear upon said ring 7 opposite the names of the months.
The upper surface of the ring 7 is flush with and throughout is in the same plane with the upper surface of an upwardly extended portion 12 which is in connection with the supportin part 8 on which the ring 7 is mounted. The upwardly extended portion 12 is provided with radial demarcations 13 adapted to register with the demarcations constituting the date lines upon the ring 7. One or more of the radial lines 13 within each week period is made more prominent by a suitable" configuration 14. In the specific embodiment shown there are two of the lines 13 within each week so indicated, and the chosen form of special demarcation is a diamond shaped device, though it is obvious that other suitable expedients may beemployed as preferred.
The ring 7 being movable with respect to the part 12 as well as with respectto the names of the months, it is obvious that the movable date ring 7 may be adjusted with respect to the demarcatlons lat as to designate all of the Sundays or Saturdays, or otherselected days within the same year.v The slight m avement required by the ring 7 to indicate the selected days within any given year, results in no inconvenience even though the first or last days of the month, as indicated upon the ring 7, may be beyond the lines defining the month spaces 6.
An annular groove is formed in the upper side of the ring 4, anda ring 15 is seated insaid groove. The upper surface of the ring 15 is flush with the upper surface of the portion on which the month spaces 6 are formed, and is also in the same plane with the upper surface of the ring 7. The ring 15 is movable with respect to the ring 4 and also with respect to the ring 7. For the'purpose of moving the ring 15 I provide a 'manually engageable member 16 passing through a slot 17 in the peripheral portion of the ring 4, and having threaded engagement with said ring 15. Thus the member 16 constitutes a handle for revolving the rim 15, the extent of movement being limite only by the length of the slot 17, and said member 16 also prevents the ring 15 from becoming detached from the machine.
' The'upper surface of-the ring 15, which is in the same plane with the month spaces 6 and with the ring 7 is provided with radial demarcations 18 ada ted to register with the radial date lines on the line 7. As in the I case of the denial-cations on the raised portion 12, one or more of the radial lines 18 within each week period are made more prominent by suitable configurations 19. The configurations 19 are of the same shape as the special configurations 14. It is preferable that they be of a color which is distinctive from the color of the marking devices 1%, for the purpose of avoiding confusion. The ring 15 being movable with re spect to the ring 7 and the part 12, as well as with respect to the month spaces 6, it is obvious that said ring may be adjusted with respect to the date ring 7 so as to designate all of the Sundays or Saturdays, or other selected days, within a year previous to or after the year the spgcial days of which are designated by the lndicating devices on the raised portion 12. Thus, the spaces 14 on the raised part 12 may be employed to indicate the special days within the present year, for instance, such indication being effected by adjusting the ring 7 in proper position to bring the special days thereon which are to be designated opposite the marking devices 14. Then by adjusting the ring 15 with respect to the ring 7 the special days of the, previous year or the succeedmg year will be indicated by the special marks 19.
A revoluble frame for'supporting'the re-- sult tables and for cooperating with the calendar members above described, is supported within the supporting frame or case 1. In the embodiment illustrated the supporting frame includes a hub 20 mounted upon an axial member 21 removably secured to the'frame 1 by clamp nuts 22. The upper extremity of the member 21 is threadedand is engaged with a nut 23 which. is arranged to prevent removal of the hub, but to permit the .free and independent rotation thereof. The lower portion of the hub' 20 is provided with a circular flange 24 to which is secured the light sheet metal plate Near tables in the machine, as illustrated in -Fig. 2.
, The plate 25 is provided with an upturned portion 30 to the upper edge of which is secured a ring 31. The ring 31 is supported in connection with the upturned portion 30 by means of removable screws 32. To the upper surface of the ring 31 is secured a ring 33 which is in the same plane with the upper surface of the adjacent raised portion 12 and the other cooperating portions of calendar mechanism mounted on the ring 4. The ring 33 is detachably secured to the ring 31 by screws 34:, and the upper surface of said ring 33 is provided with 365 radial lines numbered consecutively from 1 to 365. .An arrow 35 is formed adjacent to the radial line 1 so that when it is desired to ascertain, the number of days between two dates within a year, the desired result may be quickly and readily accomplished. The number of days between any two dates within a year will be plainly indicated to the operator by placing the arrow 35 opposite the first of the two dates,
since the number upon the ring 33, which is oppositethe latter of the two dates, will be the number of days between said dates.
For each of the day numbers upon the ring 33 a table 36 is provided, said tables containing calculations in any desired line of business, which calculations have direct reference to or are predicated upon the number of days to which said tables respectively conform. These tables are pivotally supported and are provided with upwardly extending tabs 37 adapted to be manually engaged, whereby any selected table may be raised upwardly to present the calculations thereon to the view of the operator. Preferably each of the tabs 37 is provided with a hole 38 adapted to receive any suitable implement smaller than the fingers of the operator, so that any selected table may be raised without bending or defacing the tabs onthe adjacent tables. To the ring 31 are secured a series of' radial arms 39 extending inwardly, and the upper edges of which are in approximately the same plane as the upper surface of the ring 33. The arms 39 may be secured to the ring 31, as shown,
first by being seated within notches in the ring 31, and then pouring metal within an annular passage through the arms 39 and the intermediate portions of the ring 31, the subsequently cooled metal forming a ring "10 which constitutes a substantially integral bond or union between the arms 39 and the ring 31. The arms 39 are provided with annularly alined holes a1 adapted to receive the pivot members forsupporting the result tables.
In the embodiment shown two resilient plates 42 are secured to each result-table, preferably by eyelets 43, the said resilient arms extending obliquely away from each other beyond the edge of the result-table to which they are secured. The extended por tions of the resilient plates are adapted to be received between the supporting arms 39, and said arms are pressed out to form projeCt-i01'1s44. The projections -14 are received within the holes 411 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3, thus 'pivotally uniting the result-tables with their supports in such a manner that eachresult-table is independently operable and independently detachable.
The result-tables may contain any desired results of calculations having reference to the day numbers to which they respectively conform.
I do not restrict myself to the employ-- ment of any particular class of calculations, nor to any particular uses, but desire to claim. my'invention irrespective of the use to which it may be applied.
What- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a stationary support, an
spaces corresponding to the months of the year formed on said support, a ring movably supported by the support adjacent to said series of spaces, radial lines formed on said ring corresponding to the days of the months respectively, an additional ring movably supported by said support adjacent to the first-named ring, numbered radial lines on said additional ring corresponding to the days of the months respectively, another series of radial lines adjacent to said addiannular series of rigidly located designated said series of spaces, radial lines formed on said ring corresponding to the days of the months respectively, an additional ring movably supported by said support adjacent to the first-named ring, numbered radial lines on said additional ring corresponding to' the days of the months respectively, a
movable support mounted on the stationary support, and means for cooperating said movable support with said additional ring and with said numbered radial lines to indicate the number of days between any selected dates less than one'yefarapart.
3. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a'stationary support, an
annular series of rigidly located designated spaces corresponding, to the months of the year formed on said support, a ring movably supported by said support within said series of designated spaces, numbered radial lines on said ring corresponding to the days of the months respectively, another series of radial lines adjacent to said ring also corresponding to the days of the months respectively, a movable support mounted on the stationary support, and means for c0- operating said mov'able support with said ring andavith said radial lines to indicate the number of days between any selected dates less than one year apart.
4. In a calculating device, the combination of a stationary annular support, an annular series of designated month spaces rigid on the stationary support, a ring movably mounted on the stationary support, radial lines on said ring corresponding to all of the days of all of the months designated in said month spaces, an additional ring mov ably mounted on the stationary support, numbered 'adial lines on the additional ring corresponding to the days of the months respectively, means for adjusting one of said rings relative to the other, a result carrier, results of computations on said carrier having reference to the number of days to which sald rings respectively correspond, and means for cooperating the result carrier with said additional ring and with said numbered radial lines to indicate the results on said carrier that correspond to the respective number of days between any two dates indicated by any of said numbered radial lines.
5. A calculating device, comprising a stationary support, a ring movably mounted on the stationary support, designated month spaces rigid on said support, radial lines on said ring corresponding to the days of the months, an additional movable ring on said support, numbered radial lines on said additional ring cooperating with the radial lines on the first-namedtring to indicate the- JASON B.
