The invention consists in the specific construe: tion and arrangements of parts described and claimed, a distinctive feature being the provision of an outer casing for the main inder cylinder which not only strengthens and reinforces the latter, and protects it from injury from contact with extraneous objects, but also acts as a means of drainage and discharge for leakage, all as hereinafter fully set forth.

The main or, piston cylinder C,.is formed with an exterior jacket C', also preferably cylindrical and concentric with said piston cylinder C,-the two being spaced apart sol as to form an annular passage or compartment c communicating with the piston cylthrough the medium of a series of holes c', o. The outer extremity of the piston rod p, is formed with a finger loop p', to facilitate manipulation; and finger loops a2, 4f, may also be formed on the rear cap A, for a like reason, they being available as alfording a purchase when the piston rod is being driven inward to cause the piston l, to expel through the induction and discharge duet c4, the contents of the cylinder from between the outer face of the piston P, and the front end c5, of said inner cylinderl C,-said inlet and discharge duct 04, forming an integral part of said cylinder end c5.
The front end of the outer cylinder or jacket C', is screw threaded andpis closed by a Screw Cap B, which is also female screw threaded centrally to receive the threaded extremity of the inlet and discharge. duel viously admits of more or less leakage around the piston, which is why we provide for drainage through the space c, between the jacket C', and the main cylinder C, said drainage escaping through the holes 02,

In charging the syringe is held in a substantially vertical position over the vessel containing the liquid or solution to be used in the treatment of the patient, and, the pis ton having been previously pushed forward t0 expel the last preceding charge, is drawn upward by means of the rod p, and loop p',
thereby sucking` in a fresh charge through the' syringe tip s, nipple b', and duct 04. This upward or retractile stroke of the piston forces any 1ieakage or drainage that may have collected in the main cylinder C, above or to the rear of the piston P, out through the ports c', into the space 0, between the two cylinders, from which space c, this drainage escapes through the ports b2, in the end cap B, back into the supply vessel below.
By thus disposing ofthe leakage it cannot dripon clothing or otherwise become objectionable.
When the piston is advanced to expel the liquid through the duct c4, nipple b', and tip s, any leakage around the piston P, collects in the space between it and the rear cap A, to be in turn expelled through the drain space c, when the piston is retracted as above set forth.
It will thus be seen that our auxiliary cylinder or jacket fulfils a triple function in that it reinforces and strengthens the syringe as a whole; protects the inner main cylinder from indentation or injury by reason of contact with extraneous objects; and affords a drainage passage for the elimination of leakage, etc.
With an unpacked piston such asis used inr syringes of this class the protection of the main cylinder against injury or indentation is important, since even a slight internal depression in the main cylinder C, would be sufficient to cause binding of the piston and interfere with the utility of the device; while the additional strength and stability afforded by the duplex structure of cylinders adds materially to the life of the syringe and.
insures it against rough usage.
The acidulated and medicated solutions that are used in the treatment of certain diseases and affections renders the elimination of leakage during use an important factor,
- since otherwise the clothingof patient or attendant are apt to suffer serious damage.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, Y
. 1. A syringe ofthe character designated,
' comprislng a mam cylinder, a protecting jacket surrounding the same, said main cylinder having at one end an annular closure shoulder and at the other end webs on the exterior `of the cylinder contacting with the, said jacket and serving as reinforcements, a piston and accessories, the cylinder 'having drain ports, a cap on the front end of said jacket provided with drain holes and a discharge opening and a nozzle on the main cylinder proj ectng into said discharge openlng.
2. A syringe of the character designated,
comprising a cylinder having a connecting.
duct extending from one end thereof, a piston and its accessories, an outer protecting jacket spaced therefrom and communicating therewith, a front cap having drain holes and a central passage and-an exterior nipple, and an interior socket to receive said cylinder.
3. A syringe of the character designated, comprising an inner main cylinder formed at its forward end with an induction andf MARTIN MEYER. HOWARD MEYER.
