FREDERICK CLAUDE MANNING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SPLITDORF ELECTRICAL COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
INTERRUPTER-CLAMP FOR IGNITION -DYN AMOS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 12, 1916. Serial No. 97,645.
To all whom it may concern: e it known that I, F REDERICK CLAUDE MANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Interrupter- Clamps for Ignition-Dynamos, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
My invention relates to means for clamping theinterrupter mechanism of ignition dynamos, commonly termed magnetos and has for its objects the provision of a simple and inexpensive clamp, whereby the interrupter mechanism may be clamped in any suitable position for the purpose of advancing and retarding the spark.
Magnetos as commonly used on motor vehicles have the interrupter lever connected by a suitable rod or Bowden wire, to a spark lever mounted on the steering wheel post, and provided With a toothed quadrant or similar device whereby the spark lever is positively held in any desired position.
Vith magnetos on many tractors and on stationary and marine engines, the use of the device just described is impracticable, and considerable difiiculty is experienced in providing an arrangement that will be cheap and convenient for clamping the interrupter mechanism in any desired posit-ion. This invention provides a simple and eflicient de vice entirely self-contained, and mounted directly upon the magneto and forming a part thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a magneto embodying my invention and Fig 2, an end view of the same. Like figures of reference denote the same parts wherever they are shown.
The numeral 1, denotes the casing of the interrupter mechanism, to which said mechanism is usually secured. This is movable for timing purposes and may be of any desired type. As such arrangements are already well known,- I do not describe the same.
2 denotes the usual lever or handle connected to the casing for the purpose of enabling the connection of a suitable rod or other device for moving said. casing. This arrangement is in common use.
lily invention consists in the provision of the clamp-plate 3, which is secured to the post 4, ordinarily employed for holding on the removable distributer front-plate 5. The nut 6 is taken off said post and the clampplate 3 placed thereon, then nut 6 is re placed and the outer end of the post upset s'ufli'ciently to keep the nut from coming ofi.
late 3 is provided with a slot of suflicient length to permit the full movement of the interrupter mechanism through its timing range, and movable in this slot is a suitable bolt9 secured to lever 2, having a threaded wing nut 10 on its outer end by which it may be clamped. v 7
It will now be seen that by means of nut 10, the bolt 9 may be suitably positioned within the slot 8 thereby giving a corresponding range of adjustment to the interrupter mechanism.
lVhile for the sake of illustration I have shown my invention as applied to a specific type of magneto, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to this precise application, aS it is obvious that my invention may be utilized in connection with any form of magneto, having one'part stationary and another part timing purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with an ignition dynamo having an interrupter thereon movable for timing purposes, clamp means carried wholly by said dynamo whereby the said interrupter may be clamped in various position for timing purposes, substantially as described.
2. In combination with an ignition dynamo having a movable part including an interrupter fortiming purposes, means for clamping the interrupter in more than one position, said means comprising a member carried wholly on a fixed part of said dynamo, and a second member secured to said moving part and adapted to engage said first member, substantially as described.
3. In combination with an ignition dynamo having a part including an interrupter movable for timing purposes, a post secured to a fixed part of said dynamo, a clampplate securedto said post and having a portion adapted to engage a bolt. a bolt secured to the movable portion of said dynamo and engaging said clamp-plate, and means for clamping said bolt and plate together, whereby said movablepart of said dynamo may be locked in various positions.
