lla lili lPlllfDElt-RECEPTAULE.
To all whom z' may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOSEPH llloMonoUs, a citizen of the United States, nesidincf at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of lllinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Powder-Receptacles, of which the following is a speciiication.l
My invention relates more particularly to improvements in so-called vanity cases, wherein provision is made for storing face powder, or the like material, and powder puffs, and usually of a. size adapting them to be carried in a ladys pocket-book, or hand-bag, and my object is to provide a r novel, simple and economical form of yanity-case.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a vanity-case constructed in accordance with my invention, the cover of the case being shown separated therefrom. Fig; E?, is a view of the mirror-equipped face of the cover. Fig. 3 is a 'plan View of the body ofthe case with the cover removed. i is an enlarged "View in sectional elevation of the case with certain of the parts shown in disassembled but related,- positions, this view showing the form of the parts of the body of the ease before the assembling and securing operations; and ldig. 5 is a similar 1view of `die case after the parts have been assembled, and showing the cover in position thereon.
lhe case is :formed of a body-portion S and a cover "l, these parts being formed of any suitable material and in any desirable way, but preferably formed of inet-al, or other desirable sheet-material, and preferably covered, at least in part, with nia terial such as celluloid The body il is formed of a dish-shaped member 8 having an annular flange 9 about its periphery, over which the cover 'i0 for the exposed surfaces of the member 8, er;- tends, and is crimped into place, this cover, where used, preferably being Celluloid, and the member 8, by preference, being slightly dished the portion thereof bounded by the base of the flange 9, as shown; a banduieniber il which entends at an angle to the base-member S and forros a side of the case ano is held in this position by engage nent wien the bottom member d, herein- J dscribed, and diaphragm l@ located proyided between the bottom Specication of Letters Eatent.

rllhe diaphragm 1i); in the particular construction illustrated is formed as a part integral with the band-section 11, represented in Fig. il, this bandsection and diaphragm being preferably pressed froin sheet-roetal- Thediaphragni 12 is preferably upwardly' oflset, as represented, to cooperate with the bottom member 5 3, in providing the space 13 of the desirable 7roluine, the diaphragm 12 containing an opening 15 for a purpose hereinafter described.
rllhe bandinember 11 is provided about its periphery and closely adjacent to the end thereof at which it joins to the edges of the diaphragm 12, with an annular groove 16, preferably pressed therein dur ing the operation of shaping the combined band-section and diaphragm. 'llhe groove 16 is provided for the purpose of forming an interlock with the outer edge of the Harige 9, with which this portion of the band 11 telescopes, shown in Fig. 5, the Flange 9 being contracted to entend into the groove 1G after these parts have been telescoped as described, by an operation well known in the art, thus causing the parts described to be rrnly secured together in a position for affording the two compartments 13 and 1t The cover may be of any suitable construction, `it being preferred, however, to construct it as shown in the drawings, namely, by forming it of a disk 1T-having an annular flange 18, this disk being prefer ably covered by any suitable material, as, for example, Celluloid, as represented at 19, and a flanged ring 20 which snugly against the inner periphery of the member 17 and is shaped to hold a mirror F11 in place, this cover the pr lferred construction shown, beine adapted to telescope with the outer end of the band 11 and be releasably held thereto by springing over nubs 11a on the outer surface of the band-section as represented.

preferred that means be provided for regulating the closure of this opening, a description ot' the means illustrated and those which I prefer to employ being as follows: A disk 23 arranged concentric with the diaphragm 12, is rotatably confined thereon, as through the medium of an eyelet 24 arranged concentric with these members, the disk Q3 containing a relatively large opening 25 and a series of relatively small perforations 26 disposed in diiierent angular positions relative to the pivot/al point of the disk, and so arranged that either the opening 25 or the series of openings 26 may be moved into registration with the opening 15, or a blank part of the disk 23 moved into registration with this opening. The opening 25 is provided for registration with the opening 15 to permit the compartment 13 to be charged with powder. The perforations 26 are provided to enable the powder to be sifted from the compartment 13, and the unperforated portion of the disk 23 serves, when superposed over the opening 15, to close the latter and prevent spilling of the powder, the user merely by rotating the disk 23 on the diaphragm 12, which may be more readily accomplished by reason of the provision of the button 12*l struck up from the diaphragm, edecting the above stated registrations as desired.
, While I have illustrated and described aV particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood' as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a powder receptacle, the combination of a bottom member having an upturned peripheral flange, a band secti'on having a bead with which said flange engages to permanentlyhold said member and section together, a diaphragmhaving a filling opening connect'- ed with said band section and dividing the space between said bottom member and the upper level of said band section into two compartments, the lower one for powder and the upper for a powder puff, and a lcover for the other end of said band sec- 2. In a powder receptacle, the combination ota bottom member having an upturned peripheral Flange, a band section having an outer bead with which said flange engages to permanently' hold said member and section together, a diaphragm having a filling 'opening connected with said band section and dividing the space between said bottom member and the upper level of said band section into two compartments, the lower one for powder and the upper for a powder puit', and a cover for the other end of said band section adapted to be snapped into place.
3. In a powder receptacle, the combination of a concaved bottom member having an upturned peripheral iange, a band section permanently secured to said bottom member by said flange, a diaphragm having a filling opening integrally Jformed with the band section and concaved oppositely from the bottom member to form a chamber therebetween to contain powder, and a cover member adapted to engage the upper part of said band section to close the opening therein.
4. In a powder receptacle, the combination of a concaved bottom member having an upturned peripheral flange, a band section permanently secured to said bottom member by said iange, a` diaphragm having a filling opening integrally formed with the band section and concaved oppositely from the bottom member to form a chamber'therebetween to contain powder, and a cover member adapted to engage the upper part of said band section to close the opening therein, said cover comprising a concaved member vhaving an upturned lange, and a frame member fitting within said concaved part and held in position by said fiange and adapted t5' hold a mirror or the like between it and said cover.
5. In a powder receptacle, the combination of a concaved bottom member having an upturned flange, a band section telescoping within said upturned flange, a diaphragm having a filling opening integral therewith adapted to form with said concaved bottom a chamber for powder, a plurality of projections at the upper part ot said band member, and a cover adapted to close the opening of said band member comprising a concaved member havingan nptnrned Hange, and means carried thereby adapted to coact with said projections for holding the cover in place.
