'horizfontal section, ,ofa4 boll brealingfand cottoncleaning apparatus embodyingmain yfeatures of my invention. i
. Fig. 3, is a cross-sectional viewtale nlon Fig. 1-,is a cross-sectional view., taken von line yfg/ of Fig. 2, and
line wax, of-Fig. 2. l fR-eferring to the drawings l` represents l'- {theexternal frameffcr the al paratus which, -for convenience lin ymanu acture andthe `assemblage of parts, is preferably of` substantially pentagonal outline, with point of the pentagonpointing downward-to form-f" atrash trough Qwhereinatrash conveyer of anywell knownconstruction, isr de- -sfigned'to operate. At preferably theinlet Aend of the apparatus, this trouglri` 2 disi Within the frame-Irland supportedtherein infany suitable lmanner is la tubular wall for casing 6 extending vlongitudinally from end to end of the apparatus- Within the chamv rangedithe boll breaking and cleaning mechlongitudinally extending beams 9 to which thefplates l0y are secured, said platesfconstr `tuting the imperforate wall 'of a drum rei y volving with` the shaft 7.- In `the preferred'A form of construction'th'e wall or periphery of the drum is hexagonal, valthough the wall may be circular if desired and the drum may be a solid shaft or roller of any required diameter with an imperforate periphery.l
The beams 9 also constitute supports for paddle blades ll, which project from the drum, roller or shaft constituting a revolvingsupport toward the casing G. The workcharges intofa pipe 4 having its exterior end fclosed by acollapsible valve 5 also of well [known form. vrIhe outside framel is built v'up of alternate wood and metal parts which formy an essentiallyI air tight compartment or chamber.
"berformed bythe wall or casing -6' is are' ing tips 1Q ofthe .blades 11 are bent spirally with respect to the periphery of the drum to therebyv assist in forcing the cotton through the apparatus. p
At the left `hand end ofthe apparatus the blades-11 are set relatively close I. together andcoperate with a breast 13 to constitute the boll breaker. The breast 13-is'prefer'- ably of slatte'dV construction and forms a portion of the lower part of tubular casing 6. IA breast regulating.deviceillustrated in Fig.' 5 consists essentially of a strap or straps '14 hinged at oneend as'at 15 to a rod 16 passing through and supported by the ex- Vterior frame 1 said straps arranged t-o constitute the support for the slats of the breast 13. The straps 141C are secured to a block 17 and a worm or screw shaft 18 working in a portion of'frame 1 serves to raise andA lower the block 17 to elevate or raise said breast 13, and thereby adjust it withrespect'to the paddle blades 11.
At the cleaning portion of the apparatus the paddles 11 are spaced farther apart and kcooperate with .a screen 19 forming a part of casing 6 vand extending from a point where breast 13 terminates to the outlet end of the apparatus. The screen 19 is approximately circular. n
The inletito theapparatus comprises a box-like structureQO supported on the top ofV the external casing 1 and substantially fanshape'd in plan view. lThe broad base of the fan discharges .downwardly into casing 1, the opening 21 frombox 2O extending longitudinally so as to cover the entire boll breakving section and substantially the major portion ofthe cleaning portion of the appara4 tus. The contracted mouth 22 forming thel entrance `to the box-like'inlet 2O communicates directly with a chute or flue 23 and said 'chute 23 is: provided with means where by'it may 'be shifted in box 2O in a direction longitudinally of the apparatus so that chute v23 may connect the mouth 22 with any por,-
tion of the discharge 21 from the box 20.
As explained more'fully in my formerapplicatiom this. arrangement of chute or flue 23 permits of the discharge of cotton to any vpoint of theappai'atus so that said cotton, if required7 may be subjected. to both boll breaking and cleaning means or to cleaning means alone to a more or less extent ofthat portion of the apparatus as' the condition of the cottonrequires.
v'Ihepreferred form of swinging chute 23 in box 20 is illustrated in Fig. 1. The front end of chute 23 is hinged as at 24 to the mouth 22 and a rack 25 and -pinion 26 controlled by hand wheel 27 may be used'to shift the chute,'to the varying positions illustrated in full and dotted lines or to intermediate positions as required.
' The outlet 28 for the cotton is at the periphery of the casing G and terminates in a flueileadingto pneumatic 'conveyer or pipe 30, wherein suction is created by a fan or other suitable instrumentality.
The inlet 20 :and outlet '2S are preferably inthe same plane'. y
In the operation of the apparatus the cotton under suction is drawn into the appara- -tus and delivered to the exterior ofthe revolving support between the exterior of said support and the casing 6.
If the cotton is directed to the boll breaker, the paddles `11 cooperate with breast 13 to break the bolls'and the paddles also serve to ladvance the cotton totliecleaiiing portion of the apparatus. In the cleaning portion the paddles 11 cooperate `with screen 19 to force the loose particles ofl :dirt out of the cotton"bybentrifugal force and mechanical manipulation. In both operations the cottonis treated centrifugally.or peripherally of theY support, 'and'is'iinally mechanism comprising a breast and a screen r' 'wall constituting a`casing and a housing in- "closing said casing, a support revolving within the casing and provided with .an im- `perforate wall,'a series of paddle blades provjecting fromthe iinperforate periphery atV one end lof lsaid-support (and cooperating with said breast, and av series 'of' paddles projecting from'the remaining'portion' of the -support and cooperating with the screen /portion'of the casing.
2. -In a` device of the vcharacter described, a combined boll breaking and cleaning mechanism comprising a breast 4and la'screen wall constituting a casing and a'housing inclosing vsaid casing, 'support revolving within the casing andp'rovided with an imperforate wall,^'a series ofpaddle bladesproj ecting Afrom the imperforate `periphery at one end of said vsupport and cooperating with said breast, anda series of paddles projecting from 'the 5 remaining lportion f ofthe support and cooperating with the screen portion of the casing, Isaid'paddles beingarranged spirally around the-imperforate wall of said support.
v3. In a device ofthe character described,
av combined `boll breaking and cleaning mechanism, vcomprising a "breast and a screen wall constituting ar'casing and a housinginclosing 'said casing, asupport 'revolving within the casing andprovidedV with an cimperforate wall, a series of paddle blades projecting fromthe imperforate periphery -at one end of saidsupport and cooperating` with said breast, and a series of paddles projecting from the remaining portion of the support and coperating With the screen portion of the casing and a means for introducing cotton under suction to the space between the casing and the Wall of the support.
