UNDERDOG FOR SAWMILL-CARRIAGE KNEES.

- which it can also be released at will;lto provide an under-dog having a 'body'portion of ratchet wheel form and a holdingfprong projecting from one side thereof, and in general, to provide a simple, practical and efficient under-dog which can be very easily operated and which is automatically locked in its various positions of adjustment.
In order that others may thoroughly understand my invention, I have shown one practical form thereof in the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure l is aside elevation of an underdog embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings which illustrate one practical form of my invention, 1 designates a knee against which the logs are placed on the carriage in a saw mill. My improvements comprise an under-dog 2, having a body portion 2 of ratchet wheel form, and a holding prong 2 projecting from one side thereof and adapted to be forced into a log, designated A; Said under-dog is mounted to rotate upon a supporting hearing or shaft 3, projecting from the knee 1. Rigidly mounted upon said shaft 3, around said dog is a bearing yoke 4, of angle form in side elevation, having the upturned arms or portions 4 and 4 and of U-shape in plan View, with the looped portion 4 extending around the ratchet wheel portion of the under-dog in a horizontal direction, as indicated. Pivotally connected to the upper ends of the upturned portions 4* -4 of the bearing yoke 4 is an operating lever 5, having an operating pawl 6, and the usual operating rod 5*, and a hand trip or lifting lever therefor 5", whereby said pawl 6 can be lifted at will out of engagement with the ratchet wheel portion 2 of the under-dog. Pivotally mounted in the bearing yoke 4 is a gravity pawl 7 having a weighted portion 7 to insure its automatic locking engagement with the ratchet wheel portion of the under-dog and thus prevent its backward movement.
Pivotally secured to the bearing yoke 4, as at 9, is an angle trip lever 10, having one arm 10 extending rearwardly and underlying the gravity pawl 7 and one arm 10 extending upwardly into a position to be engaged by the lower portion of the operating lever 5, whereby when said lever 5 is moved forwardly to the position indicated in dotted lines, it engages said trip lever 10 and moves it' forwardly, which trip lever operates at its opposite end 10 to lift the gravitypawl 7 out .of engagement with the ratchet-[wheel portion of the under-dog 2. Thus said under-dog is released and any movement of the log operates to throw it out of holding engagement therewith. When it is desired to force the prong 2 into looking or holding engagement with the log, the operating lever 5 is pulled backwardly, whereupon the pawl 6, in engagement with the enlarged ratchet wheel portion of the dog, operates to turn said dog up into the log. By pivotally mounting the lower end of the operating lever5 to the fixed upper ends 44 of the bearing yoke 4, a short leverage is had from the pivotal point thereof to the pawl 6, thus giving a greater leverage on the under-dog through the operating lever 5.
Thus with a single operating lever, the operator is able to lift the underdog up and force it into the log and with a forwardmovement thereof, he is able to release the dog and thus release the log. I do not limit the invention to the form thereof shown except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims forming a part hereof.
I claim:
1. In combination with the knee or standard of a saw mill carriage, an under-dog having a body portion terminating in a holding prong and pivotally connected through its body portion to said knee, an operating lever pivotally mounted and having a part adapted to engage the body portion of said under-dog for moving the same,
whereby to move its holding prong into op t ng the a holding position, and means operating on the body of said under-dog for holding it against backward -movement.
In comb nation with the knee or standard of a saw mill carriage, an underdog having a body of ratchet wheel form terminating in a prong adapted to be forced into a log, an operating lever pivotally mounted adjacent to said under-dog and having operating connections with the ratchet wheel portion thereof for turning the same to force its prong into a log, and means for holding said under-dog against backward movement. i
3. In combination with a knee for saw mills, an under-dog having a body portion of ratchet wheel form and a prong adapted to be forced into the logs, an operating lever pivotally mounted adjacent to said under-dog and having an operating pawl adapted to the ratchet portion thereof for w a gravity pawl pivot-.- ally mounted to automatically hold said under-dog against backward movement, and means for releasing said gravity pawl.
4. In combination with a knee for saW mills, an under-dog having a body portion of ratchet wheel form and a prong adapted to be forced into the logs, an actuating lever pivotally mounted adjacent to said under-dog and having an operating pawl mounted to actuate said under-dog, a gravity pawl pivotally mounted to automatically hold said under-dog against backward movement, a trip lever pivotally mounted and operable by said operating lever for releasing said gravity pawl and said nde -(1 g- 5. In combination with a knee for saw mills, an under-dog pivotally mounted thereon and having an enlarged portion of ratchet wheel form and a prong, and an operating lever pivotally mounted at a point eccentric to said ratchet wheel portion and having an operating pawl mounted thereon adapted to said ratchet for operating said under-dog, substantially as described.
6.. In combination with a carriage head for saw mills, an under-dog having a round body portion and a prong adapted to be forced into the log, a bearing yok vfixedly mounted around said body portion, an oper-. ating lever pivotally mounted in said bearing yoke and provided with a pawl for operating on said round body portion of said dog, a gravity pawl pivotally mounted on said bearing yoke and automatically engaging and locking said dog against backward movement, and a trip lever pivot-ally mounted on said bearing yoke and having a part adapted to engage and lift said gravity pawl and a part adapted to be engaged by said operating lever, substantially as vdescribed,
7. In combination with a carriage head for saw mills, an under-dog having a ratchet wheel portion and a prong,pivotally mounted on said head, a bearing yoke fixedly mounted around said under-dog, an operating lever pivotally mounted in said bearing yoke and provided With a pawl, with means for lifting the same, ally mounted in said bearing yoke and normally holding said dog against backward movement, nd trip lever pivotally mounted on said bearing yoke and having a portion underlying said gravity pawl and a part projecting adjacent said operating lever, wherebythe backward movement of said lever moves said trip lever and releases said dog, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the character referred to, an under-dog having a body portion of ratchet wheel form and a prong projecting from one side thereof, and means operating on the body portion for forcing said prong into logs.
