Description
WILLIAM H. KING. I
Improvement in Sash Holders.
No. 123,110. Patentedlamw, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. HASKELL KING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,110, dated January 30, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, W. HAsKELL KING, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks or Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the improved sash-lock or fastener, showing the same as operated by a cam. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slight modification ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view as operated by a screw. Fig. ais a front view ofthe face-plate.
This invention relates to an improvement in sash-locks or fasteners; and it consists of a metallic plate formed with lugs or ears, which serve as journals for a bell-crank, bolt, or catch, one end of which protrudes through an opening inthe said face-plate, while the other end projects through an eye formed in a vertical lug or ear, upon which latter end is connected with a stop provided with a ca-m or screw, or their equivalents, by the turning of which the said bolt is operated so as to cause its end to engage or disengage with an opening in the sash, or with a plate arranged upon said sash.
In each gure, like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the face-plate, which is formed with openin gs through which screws pass, by which means the device is secured within a recess formed in the jamb of the window-frame. This plate A is provided with two ears or lugs, a a, having eyes to receive the journals bb of a bell-crank, catch, or bolt, B. This bolt or catch is provided with a curved or bent arm, c, and a lug, d, the former passing through an opening, e, of the face-plate, and which engages or locks into openings formed in the sash or in openings formed in a metallic plate and secured upon said sash, while the latter, d, connects with a rod or strap, f, the end of which is guided and supported in a lug or ear, g, of the face-plate. This rod or connection j' is provided with a cam or screw-nut, h, or their equivalents, in such a manner that, by turning the said cam or screw-nut h in one direction, the rod 0r strap j' will be drawn in, by which means the catch or bolt B is drawn back, and its end, o,
disengaged or brought out of contact with the openings in the sash-frame, and, by reversing the turning', the end o again engages with the said openings. To cause the catch or bolt to engage with the openings quickly and of its own will, a coiled or other spring, D, is arranged upon the rod or strap f, having its seats at each end against the lug or ear g, and the shoulder t of the said rod or strap j'.
The device as above constructed is arranged within a recess or jamb of the window-frame, with its face fronting the end or edge of the sash, while the cam or screw for operating the bell-crank, catch, or bolt, enters a small opening facing the front of the sash, into which opening a thumb-key, K, is inserted to engage with and operate said cam or screw.
When the device is applied to a windowframe it is concealed from view, the only part exposed being the openin g in the jamb for inserting the key. When applied to a windowframe the sash can be locked in any position desired, and by turning the cam or screw so as to keep the end of the catch 0r bolt out of con` tact with the openings in the sash, the same can be elevated or lowered as if the device was not attached to the window-frame.
It is evident from this construction that the lock or fastener canbe attached to the sash and made to engage with the jamb, or a plate p arranged thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic plate A, provided with the ears a a, in combination with the bell-crank, catch, or bolt B, rod f, lug g, spring D, and thumbkey K, or other suitable device for withdrawing the rod j' to release the bolt, all operating in connection with the cam or screw-nut lt, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
To the above I have signed my name this 16th day of December, A. D. 1871.
Witnesses: W. HASKELL KING.
W. J. PEYTON, PARKER H. SWEET, Jr.
