UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL S. COBURN, OF AlWBOY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,086, dated January 30, 1872 antedated January 13, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. GOBURN, of Amboy, in the county ot' Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bake-Ovens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speciication, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
This invention has relation to an improved oven; and the novelty consists chieily in the construction and novel arrangement of nreplates and reiiectors, employed in connection with a pan-wheel, holding a number of gravi tatin g pans, the object being to spread the heat, and prevent the burning` of whatever is being baked.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a brick oven with an arched top. B represent-s a tire-place; and l), a grate. This fire-place is covered, and has on top a number of heat apertures, b. `C designates concave diagonal nre-plates or reflectors, reaching from the sides of the nre-place to the sides of the oven. D indicates a horizontal slide, with apertures to correspond with those in the top of the fireplace, over which the slide is arranged, being supported in slots formed in the front and back walls of the oven. It is designed for the purpose of regulating the passage of heat from thc fire. E represent-s a reector, consisting ot' a metallic plate, concave on its upper and con- Vex or lat on its lower surfaces, supported directly above and over the fire-place, and einployed for the purpose of spreading the heat therefrom, and also for the purpose of preventing the burning of the articles which are being baked. F represents a number of gravitating plates, hung on transverse rods connecting the ends of radial arms which project from a transverse revolving-shaft, G, having its bearings in the front and back walls of the oven. These plates are intended for the purpose of holding the bread or other pans, which are inserted through an opening, f, in the front ofthe oven. G indicates a radially-notched disk keyed to the front end 0I' the shaft Gr, which is furnished with a lever, H, loosely hung and formed with a projection, g, designed to t the notches g' in order to turn the disk and shaft. sents a spring arranged within a recess in the front of the oven, and adapted to tlt the notched disk G', in order to lock it at different points. The spring is pressed out of a slot by inserting the leve1projection therein to turn the disk. J J represent, respectively, the doors to the tire-place and ash-pit. Krepresents the l main lue of the oven, in which are arranged two dampers: L, behind the iiue opening from the lire-place, and L', behind the flue opening from the oven or baking-chamber. M represents transverse rods connected to cranks on theend of the damper-rods, for the purpose of governing the dampers from the front of the oven.
The reflectors in the center and atthe sides of the oven bottom serve to spread the heat which is designed tofpass through the openings in the top of the oven. Thus the advantage of a direct heat is attained without danger of burning the bread or other articles being in the rotating pans. By means of the long slidedamper D the amount of direct heat admitted to the baking-chamber may be easily regulated. p
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the oven A and fireplace L, of the oblique concave side-reilectors G C, damper D, and the central concave reector E, substantially as specified.
ln testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence ot two witnesses.
DANIEL S. COBURN.
