This invention relates to improvements in chucks for machines for hermetically lq'sealing :by an externally disp'osed capwfcm lid jars, bottles the like used for: preserves,

In order that the invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same in relation to the accompanying drawing, reference being had to the letters and figures marked thereon. Like letters refer to like parts in the various figures, in which Figure 1 represents the side of the machine, part being in section and part in elevation.

Fig. 3 is a plan of the chuck disassociated from the machine showing, the operating means for the sealing cones.
Fig. 4 shows a bottle neck associated with the sealing cones, the left handv cone being in the inoperative position during which the bottle neck is raised into position, and the ri ht hand cone being shown in position for e ecting the pressing and rolling operation.
Fig. 5 shows a bottle neck associated with the sealing cones, and illustrates the manner in wh1ch said cones accommodate themselves to variations due to irregularities in 55 the shape of the receptacles being capped.

Levers g are pivoted on the frame at and connected with them is the ring it which is held in the upward position by the spring Links is, of which there are three shown in the drawing, are loosely pivoted at one end to the ring h, and at the other end to the knuckles Z. The knuckles Z are loosely pivoted in one end of the levers n which in turn are pivoted on the chuck m, while the other end of the levers n carry the vertical stems s carrying the sealing cones o the said stems being disposed in slots 0 in the chuck m. When the ring it is moved downward by the lever g the cones 0 travel toward the center of the chuck m and vice versa. The cones 0 are preferably fitted with ball bearings on their stems s for easy turning, the ball bearings being slidingly arranged on the said stem 8; rubber buflfers 0 being provided to allow limited vertical movement of the cones 0 in order that compensation for the irregularities of the neck or flange of the jar may be provided for.
When the various parts are in position and at the correct height for the particular receptacle to be sealed the belt is first shifted from the loose to the fast pulley, thereby rotating the vertical shaft a and chuck m carrying the cones 0, then by means of the lever g, the sealing cones o are brought in-- Wardly into intimate contact with the edge of the metal cover surrounding the lip of jar or receptacle in sucha Waythat lateral andvertical compression forces are impressed on the metal so as to roll it inwardly under the lower edge of the lip ofthe jar or receptacle thus securing the metal band or cover in place. v 'v v' The stems s carrying the sealing cones 0 can alternatively be made With long bearings and have springs fitted below the cones 0 to permit the said cones 0 to accommodate themselves to variations due to the jars or receptacles being irregular in shape and out of true as hereinbefore described.
