Be it lmownthat I, JOHN B. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in thc county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deep-Tell Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to deep well pumps of the reciprocating type, and it has for its principal object the provision of a form and arrangement of parts by which the amount of water pumped may be made as great as is practicable, all of the lifting of the water being accomplished by the upstroke -of the plunger rather than by the down stroke. As will be readily understood, when pressure is applied to a long line of pump rods c, for forcing a plunger downward in the bottom of a well there is a marked tendency of the pump rods to buckle, causing an undue amount of friction in the operation of the pump and very often unduly increasing the It is important in many cases, however, that a maximum amount of water be pumped from a well, inasmuch as the sinking of a deep well in many localities involves a very heavy eX- pense. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a construction involving the use of two cylinders, in each of which cylinders are mounted three plungers adapted to be operated by three pump rods respectively, the three pump rods being reciprocated in 120O phase relation relative to each other whereby at any given time one or another of the three plungers in each cylinder ns being moved through that portion of its stroke with approximately the greatest efficiency. By this means, yas will be readily understood, the column of water rising through each of the cylinders will be kept moving upward with approximate uniformity, thus increasing materially the efficiency of the operation of the pump as compared to that of'pumps in which the rise of the water through the cylinder is not so steady. It is another one of the objects of my invention to improve pumping apparatus of this general type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my several objects vare illustrated 'in the accompanying drawings and are hereinafter specifically described.

The pump rods of myvimproved pump are preferably operated by such a mechanism as that shown by the application of Matthew T. Chapman, for patent on pumping machinery, Serial No. 11,205, filed March l, 1915, but they may be operated by any other suitable apparatus.
Referring tothe several. figures, in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters, indicates a well tube extending down into a well, through which water or otherl fluid being pumpedis adapted to be forced to the surface. Extending down inside of the well tube'25 is a tubular pump rod 26, working inside ofwhich is a second tubular pump rod 27,'having a third pump rod 28 eX- tending down therein. The lower end of the v'well tube 25 hasy attached to it by means of a screw-threaded coupling 29 a tube or pipe 30, to the lower end of which there is connected by means of screw-threads a coupling device 31. The coupling device 31 has connected to its lower end two pipe sections 32 and 33, the pipe 33 being located inside of the pipe 32 and being spaced from the walls thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, the coupling 31 provides a tapering seat for a closure member 34 which serves to close the upper end of the pipe 33 except for the central vertical passage therethrough as hereinaii'ter described, the closure member 34 and the coupling 31 being also provided with registering annular openings therethrough by which the lower end of the pipe 30 communicates with the upper end of the pipe 32. The pipe 33 serves as the lower one of the two cylinders provided in my improved pumping apparatus, having mounted therein plungers 35, 36 and 37, connected as hereinafter described with the pump rods 26, 27 and 28, respectively. The pipe 30 and another pipe 38, mounted inside of the pipes 30 and 25 as hereinafter described, and connected at its upper end with the pump rod 26, together serve as the upper one of the two cylinders provided. Plungers 39, 40 and 41 are adapted to be reciprocated in the cylinder 30-38 by the plunger rods 262728, respectively, as hereinafter described.
As is shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the pump rod 28 has mounted upon its lower end a coupling device 42 by which a cross-head or spider 43 is iXedly secured to said pump rod, the said cross-head 43 having secured to it and depending therefrom a centrally-positioned rod 44 and a hollow pump rod section 45. As is shown in Fig. 4, the plunger 37 is mounted by means of screw-threads directly upon the lower end of the rod 44, said plunger being provided with a suitable packing 46 for engagement with the inner face of the pipe 32 and being provided with a valve 47 of any suitable type adapted to open upwardly. The plunger 41 is connected to the lower end of the pump rod section 45 by means of a coupling 48, of any suitable type, providing a suitable recess for packing 49 about a pump rod section 50 which is connected with the pump rod 27, as hereinafter described. rlhe plunger 41 is provided with an upwardly opening valve 51 of any suitable type and with packing 52 engaging the inner face of the pipe 38. The lower end of the tubular pump rod 27 is connected by means of screw-threads with a cross-head 53 which is rigidly connected by means of three pins or bolts 54 with a cross-head 55 mounted upon the upper end of the tubular pump rod section 50 by means of a coupling sleeve 56 which is joined to the cross-head 55 by means of webs 57. The plunger 40 is mountedxby means of screw-threads upon the lower end of the tubular pump rod section 50, serving also as a connection for a tubular pump rod section 58 to the pump rod section 50. The plunger 40 is provided with an upwardly-opening valve 59 of any suitable type and is provided with suitable packing 60 bearing against the inner face of the pipe 38. v Mounted upon the lower end of the tu bular pump rod section 58 is a Vcoupling member 61, to the lower end of which is connected a smaller tubular pump rod section 62, the coupling 61 being so arranged as to leave open the lower end of the tubular section 58. The plunger 36 is mounted directly upon the lower end of the tubular section 62 by means of a coupling 63, suitable packing 64 being provided between the plunger 36 and the pump rod section 44, and packing 65 being provided between the plunger 36 and the inner face of the pipe 33. The plunger 36 is provided with an upwardly-opening valve 66 of any approved type.
The upper end ot the pipe 38 is joined to the lower end of the tubular pump rod 26 by means of screw-threaded sleeves 6768 joined by radially-extending webs 69. As before described, the pipe 38 serves as a cylinder member for the plungers 40 and 41, but it also serves as a pump rod section for the plunger 39 which is mounted in its lower end by means of screw-threads. T he plunger v 39 is provided with packing 70 adapted to bear upon the inner face of the cylinder member 30, and the plunger is also provided with an upwardly-opening valve 71 of any suitable type. A pump rod section 72 is secured by means of screw-threads to the plunger 39 and extends downward therefrom, a packing 73 being secured in. the plunger 39 bearing upon the pump rod sec` tion 58 serving to close the upper end of the pump rod section 72 about the pump rod section 58. As is shown at the bottom ot Fig. 2, the closure member 34 is provided with a packing 74about the pump rod section 72. As is shown at the top of Fig. 3, a coupling member 75 is mounted by means of screw-threads upon the lower end of the pump rod section 72 for connecting the plunger 35 thereto. As is clearly shown, the plunger 35 is provided with packing 76 about the pump rod section 62 and with packing 77 bearing upon the inner face of the cylinder 33. The plunger 35 is also provided with an upwardly-opening valve 78 of any suitable type. As clearly shown in said Fig. 3, the coupling 75 provides a suitable opening from the cylinder 33 to the interior of the pump rod section 7 2, such opening being adapted to coperate with the opening through the coupling member 61 for providing free communication between the interior of the pump rod section 58 and the cylinder 33 at its upper end.
The well tube section 32 has connected to its lower end a coupling member 79 by which a suction pipe 80 is connected to the said well tube section, the suction pipe 80 being adapted to extend down in the well to a point below the suction limit of -the plungers. The coupling 79 provides a tapering seat for a valve-cage 81 supporting an upwardlyopening valve .82 of any suitable type plunger.
adapted to close the lower end of the well tube section 32. `With the plungers 39, 40 and 41 being operated successively in 120o phase relation to each other through the medium of the pump rods 26, 27 and 28, respectively, in the cylinder 30-38, and with the plungers 35, 36 and 37 being operated successively in 120o phase relation relative to each other in the cylinder 33 by the said pump rods 26, 27 and 28, respectively, in each cylinder at any given time at least one of the three plungers operating therein is moving upward at a speed approximately equal to its maximum speed of upward movement. The upward movement of any one of the plungers in the lower cylinder 33 causes the lower end of the cylinder 33 below the operative plunger to fill with water through whatever upwardly-opening valves may be located below such operative plunger, the water in the said cylinder 33 above such plunger being forced through the couplings and 6l into and through the tubular pump rod 58, being forced through such upwardly-opening valves as may be located in the cylinder 33 above such operative The water so forced upward through the tubular pump rod section 58 emerges from the upper end of the tubular pump rod section 50 into the large tubular pump rod section 115, passing upward from there into the combination pump rod section and cylinder 38 above the plunger 41, passing from that point into the well tube 25 for passage to the surface of the ground. At the same time another quantity of water is passing upward through the well tube section 32 through the registering openings in the coupling 31 and the closure member 34 into the cylinder 30-38, being drawn upward by the one of the three plungers moving upward in the cylinder 30 33 at the greatest speed at that particular time. At the same time the water above such operative plunger in the cylinder 30-38 is forced upward through such cylinder, mingling with the mass of water forced upward by the plungers in the lower cylinder in the upper end of t-he cylinder 38 above the tubular pump rod section 45. As will be readily understood, as the water is forced upward through the cylinder 30-38 by one of the three plungers operating therein, such water passes freely through the upwardly-opening valves of the other two plungers.
As will be readily understood, by the use of the mechanism described, two separate quantities of water are forced upward into the well tube 25, one quantity of water being acted upon by one set of plungers and the other quantity of water being acted upon by another set of plungers, both sets of plungers being operated by a single set of pump rods, this being accomplished by the use of two cylinders which haveaseparate and distinct inlets and which operate independently of. each other as they are actuated by the single set of pump rods.
The means shown in Fig. la for reciprocating the pump- rods 26, 27 and 2S in timed relation to each other comprises a shaft 83 provided with eccentrics 84, 85 and 86, respectively, which are connected with the several pump-rods by means of pivoted links 87, 33 and 89, respectively. The shaft 83, when rotated by power from any suitable source, serves to reciprocate the pumprods in 120 phase relation, by reasonof the equal spacing of the eceentrics about the shaft, as will be readily understood.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
l. In a deep well pump, the combination of three pump rods, two plungers connected with one of said pump rods, two other plungers connected with another of said pump rods between said first-named two plungers, and two other plungers connected with the other of said pump rods between said second-named two plungers.
2. In a deep well pump, the combination of three pump rods, means actuated by said three pump rods for raising a continuons stream of water, comprising three coperating plungers connected with said pump rods respectively and adapted to be reciprocate-d vertically thereby, and other means actuated by said three pump rods for raising water, comprising three other coopera ing plungers, and connections between said plungers and said pump rods respectively for reciprocating said plungers in vertical alinement with said first-named plungers, said connections comprising a pipe opening above the upper one of the lower set of plungers and extending upward from that point through the plungers of the otherv set for delivering the water raised by the lower set of cooperating plungers above the uppermost plunger of the other set.
In a deep well pump, the combination of a discharge pipe, three pump rods extending downward therethrough, means actuated by said three pump rods for raising a continuous stream of water tlni'ough said discharge pipe, comprising three cooperating plungers connected with said pump rods respectively and adapted to be reciprocated vertically thereby, and other means actuated by said three pump rods for raising water through said discharge pipe, comprising three other cooperating plungers connected with said pump rods respectively below said first-named three plungers and adapted to be reciprocated vertically7 by said pump rods in vertical alinement with said first-named plungers, and comprising a pipe extending lupward through said firstnamed plungers and opening above the upper on@ of said last-named plungers and also opening above the upper one of said first-named plungers for delivering the water from said last-named plungers to said discharge pipe. i
4. ln a deep well pump, the combination ot two tubular pump rod sections one within the other, a third pump rod section within the inner tubular pump rod section, doii'nwardly extending cylinder means closed at the upper end about the outer tubular pump rod section, upwardly-extending cylinder means about the outer tubular pump rod section, three plungers in said downwardly-extending cylinder means 'lixedly connected with said three pump rod sections respectively,- tlirce plungers in said upwardly-extending cylinder means liXedly connected with said three pump rod sections respectively, and means connected with said. three pump rod sections respectively for reciprocating them in timed relation to each other.
5. ln a deep well pump, the combination o1n two tubular pump rod sections one within the other, a third pump rod section within the inner tubular pump rod section, downwardly extending cylinder means closed at the upper end about the outer tubular pump rod section, upwardly-extending cylinder means about the outer tubular pump rod section, three plungers in said downwardly extending cylinder means iixedly connected with said three pump rod sections respectively, an opening from the interior of said inner tubular pump rod section into the upper end of said downwardly-extending cylinder means above said plungers, three plungers in said upwardly-extending cylinder means tixedly connected with said three pump rod sections respectively, an opening from the interior of said inner tubular pump rod seetion above the plungers in said upwardlyextending cylinder means, and means connected with said three pump rod sections respectively for reciprocating them in timed relation to each other.
6. A deep well pump comprising in coinbination a stationary cylinder open at ,its lower end, a second cylinder having a working lit in said first-named cylinder and movable longitudinally therein, a plunger in said first-named cylinder tixedly connected with said second Cylinder, two other plungers in said second cylinder, each ot said three plungers being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough, and means for reciprocating said first-named cylinder and said last-named two plungers vertically in timed relation to each other whereby said three plungers cooperate for forcing a continuous stream of water upward through said two cylinders.
7. A deep well pump comprising in combination a stationary cylinder, a second cylinder movable longitudinally within said iirst-named cylinder, a plunger in said firstnamed cylinder fiXedly connected with said second cylinder, a third cylinder fixedly connected to the lower end of said iirstnamed cylinder, closure means dividing said third cylinder from said first-named cylinder, a second plungerin said second cylinder, a pipe connecting the upper end of said third cylinder with said second cylinder above said second plunger, a third plunger in said third cylinder, means for reciprocating said second cylinder and said second plunger in opposite directions for forcing water upward through said second cylinder, means for reciprocating said third plunger, and val've means coopera ting with said third plunger for 'forcing water upward from said third cylinder through said connecting pipe.
8. A deep well pump comprising in combination a' stationary cylinder, a second cylinder movable longitudinally within said first-named cylinder, a plunger in said firstnamed cylinder iixedly connected with said second cylinder, a third cylinder liXedly connected to thc lower end ol said irstnamed cylinder, closure means dividing said third cylinder from said iirst-named cyl- Ainder, a tubular pump rod extending down through said closure means opening at its upper end within said second cylinder and opening at its lower end within said third cylinder, a second plunger liXedly mounted on said pump rod Within said second cyl.- inder below the opening of the pump rod therein, a third plunger fixedly mounted on said pump rod within said third cylinder below the opening of the pump rod therein, means for reciprocating said second cylinder with its plunger i'iXedly connected thereto and said pump rod with its two plungers iiXedly connected thereto vertically in opposite directions, and valve means cooperating with said third plunger for forcing water upward through said pump rod.
9. A deep well pump comprising in combination a stationary cylinder, a second cylinder movable longitudinally within said first-named cylinder, a plunger in said rstnamed cylinder iiXedly connected with said second cylinder, a third cylinder iXedly connected to the lower end of said iirst-named cylinder, closure means dividing said third cylinder from said iirst-named cylinder, a
second plunger in said second cylinder, a pipe connecting the upper end of said third cylinder with said second cylinder above said second plunger, a third plunger in said third cylinder, connections between said third plunger and said lirst-named plunger for causing them to move in unison with said second cylinder, means for reciprocating said second cylinder with the two plungers iiXedly connected thereto and said second plunger in opposite directions for forcing water upward through said' second cylinder, and valve means coperating with said third plunger for forcing water upward from said third cylinder through said pipe y 10. 11. A deep well pump comprising in combination a stationaiy cylinder, a second cylinder movably mounted above said firstnamed cylinder, means for reciprocating said movable cylinder relative to said stationary cylinder, two plungers in said movable cylinder, three plungers in said stationary cylinder, means for reciprocating one of the plungers in one cylinder in unison with one of the plungers in the other cylinder, means for reciprocating the other plunger in the movable cylinder with one of the other two plungers in the stationaryl cylinder, and means for connecting the remaining plunger in the stationary cylinder with the movable cylinder for reciprocation thereby.
12. A deep well pump comprising in combination a stationary cylinder, a second cylinder movably mounted above said firstnamed cylinder, means for reciprocating said movable cylinder relative to said stationary cylinder, two plungers in said movable cylinder', three plungers in said stationary cylinder, a tubular pump rod adapted to reciprocate in unison one of the plungers in one cylinder and one of the plungers in the other cylinder, another pump ron working inside of said tubular pump rod adapted to reciprocate in unison the other plunger in the movable cylinder and one of the other two plungers in the stationary cylinder, and a tubular pump rod adapted to reciprocate in unison the otherl two plungers, said tubular pump rod being provided with openings in the upper ends of both cylinders whereby such tubular pump rod is adapted to conduct the water from the lower cylinder into position above the ,f
uppermost plunger of the upper cylinder.
14. A deep well pump comprising in combination a stationary cylinder, a second cylinder movably mounted above said firstnamed cylinder, means for reciprocating said movable cylinder relative to said stationary cylinder, two plungers in said movable cylinder, three plungers in said stationary cylinder, a tubular pump rod adapted to reciprocate in unison one of the plungers in one cylinder and one of the plungers in the other cylinder, another pump rod working inside of said tubular pump rod adapted to reciprocate in unison the other plunger in the movable cylinder and one of the other two plungers in the stationary cylinder, and a tubular pump rod section connecting the remaining plunger in the stationary cylinder with the movable cylinder for reciprocation thereby, said tubular pump rod and said tubular pump rod section being provided with openings in the upper end lof the lower cylinder and said tubular pump rod being also provided with an opening into the upper end of the movable cylinder whereby a free passage is provided for the water from the-lower cylinder into position above the uppermost plunger oi the upper cylinder.
15. In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough, means for reciprocating one of the plungers in the upper cylinder and one of the plungers in the lower cylinder in unison, means for reciprocating one of the remaining two plungers in the upper cylinder in unison with one of the remaining two plungers in the lower cylinder, and means for reciprocating the other two plungers in unison, said pump comprising a pipe communicating with the lowery cylinder and extending through the upper Cylinderl for delivering the water from the lower cylinder above the uppermost plunger.
16. In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger being provided with an upwardly-oliening valve therethrough, means for reciprocating one of the plungers in the upper cylinder and one of the plungers in the lower cylinder in unison, means for reciprocating one of the remaining two plungers in the upper cylinder -in unison with one of the remaining two plungers in the lower cylinder, means for reciprocating the other two plungers in unison, said pump comprising a pipe communicating with the lower cylinder and extending through the upper cylinder for delivering the water from the lower cylinder above the uppermost plunger, and upwardly-opening valve mechanism adapted to prevent a downward movement of the water 'from the cylinders independently of the valves in the plungers.
17. In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses ot water from a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger` being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough, means for reciprocating one of the plungers in the upper cylinder' and one of the plungers in the lower cylinder vin unison, means for reciprocating one of the remaining two plungers in the upper cylinder in unison with one of the remaining two plungers in the lower cylinder, means for reciprocating the other two plungers in unison, said pump comprising` a pipe communicating with the lower cylinder and extending through the upper cylinder for delivering the water from the lower cylinder above the upper most plunger, a pipe surrounding said lower cylinder and closed at its upper end above the inlet port of the upper cylinder, and an upwardly-opening valve in said last-named pipe below the lower cylinder.

In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough, means for reciprocating the uppermost and lowermost two plungers together, means for reciprocating` the intermediate plunger of the upper cylinder and the intermediate plunger or the lower cylinder in unison, and means Jfor reciprocating the lower plunger ot the upper cylinder and the upper plunger of the lower cylinder in unison, said pump comprising a pipe communicating with the lower cylinder and extending through the upper cylinder for delivering the water from the lower cylinder above the uppermost plunger.
19. In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses o water from a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough,
means 'for reciprocatingl the uppermost andv lowermost two plungers together, means for reciprocating the intermediate plunger of the upper cylinder and the intermediate plunger or the lower cylinder in unison, and means for reciprocating the lower plunger oit the upper cylinder and the upper plunger ot the lower cylinder in unison, the means for causing the intermediate plungers of the two cylinders to move in unison comprising a tubular pump rod section opening in the lower cylinder above the plungers therein and opening above the uppermost plunger working in the upper cylinder.

In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive sepa 'ate and distinct masses of water ,trom a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough, a tubular pump rod connected with one ot the phmgers in the upper cylinder and one ot the plungers in the lower cylinder for reciprocating said two plungers in unison, second tubular pump rod extending through said first-named tubular pump rod and connected with one oi the remaining two plungers in the upper cylinder and one ot the remaining two plungers in the lower cylinder for reciprocating said two plungers in unison, and a third p ump rod extending through said second tubular pump rod and connected with the remaining two plungers for reciprocating them in unison, said pump comprising a pipe communicating with the lower cylinder and extending through the upper cylinder for delivering the water from the lower cylinder above the uppermost plunger.

In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, three plungers mounted in each of said cylinders each plunger being provided with an upwardly-opening valve therethrough, a' tubular pump rod connected with the lowermost plunger of the upper cylinder and the uppermost plunger in the lower cyl.- inder for reciprocating said two plungers in unison, a second tubular pump rod extending through said first-named tubular pump rod and connected with the intermediate plunger of the top cylinder and with the inten mediate plunger of the lower cylinder for reciprocating said two plungers in unison, and ay third pump rod extending through said second-named tubular pump rod connected with the remaining two plungers for reciprocating them in unison, said pump comprising a pipe communicating with the lower cylinder and extending through the upper cylinder for delivering the water from the lower cylinder above the uppermost plunger.

In a pump, the combination of two alined cylinders adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, a tubular pump rod section extending from one cylinder to the other and opening into the lower cylinder, a plunger in each cylinder connected with said tubular pump rod section, a movable cylinder connected with the upper one of said two plungers, a tubular pump rod connected to said movable cylinder for reciprocating both of said plungers, a second pump rod extending through said tubular pump rod, and plungers in the lowermost cylinder and said movable cylinder connected with said second pump rod, each of said four plungers being provided with an upwardly opening valve therethrough.
28. In a pump, the combination of a cyl.-
inder, a second cylinder' mounted above said iirst-named cylinder, a pipe communicating with said lirst-named cylinder and extending' upward through said second cylinder, a pump rod extending through said second cylinder and through said pipe, a plunger in said first-named cylinder mounted on said pump rod, a plunger mounted in said second cylinder about' said pipe, connections between said second-named plunger and said pump rod whereby the said two plungers are reciprocated together', each of said two plungers being provided with an upwardly-opening valve, and valve mechanism cooperating with said reciprocating plungers for forcing water upward from each of said cylinders, the inlet ports of said cylinders being separated whereby the said two cylinders are adapted rto receive separateV anc distinct masses of water from a well.
24. ln a pump, the combination of a well tube, a'plunger mounted therein, a movable cylinder connected with said plunger, a second cylinder connected to said well tube but closed therefrom, the lower cylinder and the lower end of the well tube below said plunger being provided with inlet ports adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, a pipe extending through said plunger and through said upper cylinder and communicating at its lower end with said lower cylinder, a second plunger in said movable cylinder about said pipe, a tubular pumpk rod connectedto said movable cylinder, a second pump rod extending downward through said tubular pump red and through said pipe, connections between said second pump rod and said second plunger, two plungers in said lower cylinder, and a tubular pump rod section about said pipe connecting said first plunger with the upper plunger of the lower cylinder, the lo wer plunger of the lower cylinder being connected with said second pump rod.
Q5. ln a pump, the combination of a well tube, a plunger mounted therein, a movable cylinder connected with said plunger, a second cylinder connected to said well tube but closed therefrom, the lower cylinder and the lower end of the well tube below said plunger being provided with inlet ports adapted to receive separate and distinct masses of water from a well, a pipe extending through said plunger and through said upper cylinder and communicating at its lower end with said lower cylinder, a second plunger in said movable cylinder about said pipe, tubular pump rod connected to said movable cylinder, a second pump rod extending downward through said tubular pump rod and through said pipe, connections between said second pump rod and said second plunger', two plungers in said lower cylinder, and a tubular pump rod section about said pipe connecting said first plunger with the upper plunger of the lower cylinder, the lower plunger of the lower cylinder being connected with said second pump rod, each of said plungers being provided with an upwardlyopening valve.

A deep well pump comprising in combination two cylinders in alinement with each other, a plunger in the upper cylinder, a movable cylinder of substantially the same diameter as the upper one of said iirst-named two cylinders connected at its lower end to the plunger, a plunger in said movable cylinder, means for reciprocating said plungers in opposite directions, a tubular pump rod section connected to the first-named plunger and extending downward therefrom into the lower cylinder, a second tubular pump rod section connected'to the second-named plunger and extending downward through said first-named tubular pump rod section, and plungers in the lower one of said firstnamed two cylinders connected with said pump rod sections respectively.

A deep well pump comprising in combination two cylinders in alinement with each other, a plunger in the upper cylinder, a movable cylinder of substantially the same diameter as the upper one of said first-named two cylinders connected at its lower end to the plunger, a plunger in said movable cylinder, means for reciprocating said plungers in opposite directions, a tubular pump rod section connected to the irst-named plunger and extending downward therefrom into the lower cylinder, a second tubular pump rod section connected to the second-named plunger and extending downward through saidwhereby a free passage is provided from the lower cylinder into the movable cylinder above the plunger in said movable cylinder.
28. A deep well pump comprising in combination two cylinders in alinement with `each other, a plunger in the upper cylinder,
a movable cylinder of substantially the same diameter as the upper one of said first-named two cylinders connected at its lower end to the plunger, a plunger in said movable cylinder, means for reciprocating said plungers in opposite directions, a tubular pump rod section connected to the first-named plunger and extending downward therefrom into the lower cylinder, and a plunger in the lower one of said first-named two cylinders connected with said tubular pump rod section.

A deep well pump comprising in combination two cylinders in alinement with each other, a plunger in the upper cylinder, a movable cylinder of substantially the same diameter as the upper one of said firstnamed two cylinders connected at its lower end to the plunger, a plunger-in said movable cylinder, means for reciprocating said plungers in opposite directions, a tubular pump rod section connected to the firstnamed plunger and extending downward therefrom into the lower cylinder, and a plunger in the lower one of said first-named two cylinders connected with said tubular pump rod section, said tubular pump rod section being provided with an opening into said lower cylinder above the plunger therein whereby a passage is provided for the water from the lower cylinder to the upper cylinder. A deep well pump comprising in combination two cylinders in alinement with each other, a plunger in the upper cylinder, a movable cylinder of substantially the same diameter as the upper one of said rstnamed two cylinders connected at its lower end to the plunger', a plunger in said movable cylinder, means for reciprocating said plungers in opposite directions, a tubular pump rod section connected to the firstnamed plunger and extending downward therefrom into the lower cylinder, and an upwardly-opening valve adapted to close a passage through the rst-named plunger from the outside of the tubular pump rod section below the plunger to the inside of the movable cylinder above the plunger.
3l. 1n a deep well pump, the combination of a cylinder7 two tubular pump rod sections one within the other and a third pump rod .section within the inner tubular section extending downward into said cylinder, closure means for the upper end of said cylinder about the outer ump rod section, upwardlyextending cylinlder means about said pump rod sections above said first-named cylinder, a plunger in the lower end of said upwardlyextending cylindermeans fixedly connected to the outer tubular pump rod section, a second plunger in the upper end of said firstnamed cylinder also lixedly connected to the outer pump rod section, a third plunger in said upwardly-extending cylinder means above said first-named plunger fixedly connected to the inner tubular pump rod section, a fourth plunger in said first-named cylinder below said second plunger fixedly connected to the inner tubular pump rod section, a fifth plunger in said upwardly-extending cylinder means above said third plunger fixedly connected to the third pump rod section, a sixth plunger in said rstnamed cylinder below said fourth plunger fixedly connected to the third pump rod section, and other pump rod sec-tions fixedly connected to said iirst-named three pump rod sections respectively for reciprocating said plungers in timed relation to each other.
32. 1n a deep well pump, the combination of a cylinder, a second cylinder below said first-named cylinder and in alinement therewith, two tubular pump rod sections one within the other and a third pump rod section within the inner tubular section extending downward from one cylinder to the other, closure means between said cylinders about the outer pump rod section, a plunger in the upper cylinder about the inner tubular pump rod section connected to the upper end of the outer tubular pump rod section,
a third cylinder connected with said plun-A ger and extending upward therefrom having a working fit in said rst-named cylinder, a second plunger in said second cylinder connected with the lower end of the outer tubular pump rod section, a third plunger in said third cylinder about the inner tubular pump rod section and iixedly connected to said section, a fourth plunger in said second cylinder below said second plunger connected to the lower endy of' said inner tubular pump rod section, a fifth plunger in said third cylinder 4 about the inner tubular pump rod section and ixedly connected to said third pump rod section, a sixth plunger in said second cylinder below said fourth plunger connected to the lower end of said third pump rod section, and means connected with the upper end portions of said third cylinder, said third pump rod section, and said inner tubular pump rod section, respectively, for reciprocating said plungers in timed relation to each other. f
