To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, THEODORE SCHIDORSKY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a.

certain new and useful Protective Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use thesame.

The invention relates to means constructed and arranged to give audible or visible signals, or both, and has for its object the provision of a device of very simple and compact construction which may be employed for the purpose of sounding an alarm and illuminating a compartment in the event of an attempt to open a door of the same.

Other objects of the invention will be set forth in the following detailed description of the same. I

In order to attain the desiredend the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinafter explained, the whole comprising anorganization inexpensive to manufactureand efficient in practical, use. r

In the accompanying'drawing illustrative of one embodiment of the invention Figure 1 represents a plan view of the apparatus, the gong of the mechanical vibratory bell being omitted for clearness of illustration;

Referring particularly to the drawing 11 denotes the preferably metallic casing of the apparatus which is ordinarily made with a socket 9 adapted to contain the leg of an article of furniture as that of a chair, table, etc. which may be held in the said socket by means of springs 12 or a screw or screws as 13, or by both. i In the apparatus is mounted a movable and preferably rotatable part, as 10, constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be moved when the apparatussupporting the same is pushed along in a givendirection as by the opening of a door adjacent to which the said chair or table, etc., has been preferably placed.

The apparatus is preferably so constructed that by the said operation the movable part 10 is adapted to control the action of a vibratory belleither mechanical or electrical, or both-or either that of an illuminating attachment 19, that of a denotating device, or else that of two of the same, or of all of them combined, by means of mechanism such, for example, as the following arrangement of parts:

The movable part -10 carries a pin 11 which, upon the part 10 traveling along the floor, serves to move a lever 1, the lug 15 of which, in consequence of such movement, releases the detent 16 of a clock train, thus actuating the mechanism of a mechanical vibratory bell 18, and also raises the inner arm 2 of the bell crank 24, the outer arm 4 of which preferably simultaneously swings to the left hand as viewed in Fig. 3) and trips the trigger 3 of a denotating device as a pistol 17, such for example, as one in which a fulminating cap is used as is most clearly shown in Fig. 3.

The downward movement of the outer end of the arm 2 of the switch comprising the bell crank 21 contacts with an insulated button 5 which is electrically disconnected from the casing of the, apparatus, being thereby not grounded, (which operation serves to complete an electric circuit comprising a battery 6one terminal of which is fastened to the said casing and the other connected with the bell 7an electric. vibratory bell 7 and an illuminating attachment, as a lamp 8. In order to make the appara tus still more compact, the battery may be disassociated from the same and placed upon the chair, table, etc.

In operation, the apparatus is attached to the leg of an article of furniture, as stated, the latter being preferably placed adjacent to the door of a room, and upon the door being opened, the consequent movement of the said chair, table, etc. will operate the apparatus and cause a vibratory bell to be actuated and an additional alarm to be given by the explosion of the denotating device, while the apartment may be lighted by the means comprising the illuminating attachments.

Obviously, some of the said signaling means may be omitted in the construction and operation of the apparatus, inasmuch as the movable part 10 is adapted to be used with either alarm mechanism separately, or with the whole combined together as set forth, such of the intermediate mechanism as may be desired being employed for that purpose.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a rotatable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be rotated when the article of furniture is moved by the door, an element carried by the rotatable part, means actuated by the element to control the action of a vibratory bell and an illuminating attachment, in combination with said vibratory bell, illuminating attachment and a denotating device also actuated by the controlling element.

In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a movable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be moved when the article of'furniture is pushed by the door, means actuated by the movable part to control the action of a vibratory bell and an illuminating attachment, in combination with said vibratory bell, illuminating attachment and a denotating device also actuated by the movable part.v

3. In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a rotatable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be rotated When the article of furniture is pushed by the door, means actuated by the rotatable part to operate a lever to control the action of a vibratory bell, in combination with said bell.

Inan apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a rotatable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be rotated when the article of furniture is moved by the door, means actuated by the rotatable part to operate a lever to control the action of a denotating device, in combination with the latter device.

In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a rotatable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be rotated when the article of furniture is moved by the door, means actuated by the rotatable part to operate a lever to control the'action of an illuminating attachment, in combination with the latter device.

In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a movable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be moved when the article of furniture is pushed b the door, means actuated by the movable part to control the action of an illuminating attachment, in combination with the latter device.

7 In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a movable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be moved when the article of furniture is pushed by the door, means actuated by the movable part to control theaction of a vibratory bell, in combination with the latter device.

8. In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a movable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be moved when the article of furniture is pushed by the door, means actuated by the movable part to control the action of a denotating device, in combination with the latter device.

9. In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a movable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be moved when the article of furni ture is pushed by the door, and means actuated by the movable part to control the ac tion of an electric switching mechanism, in combination with the latter device.

10. In an apparatus of the class described, a device having a socket to contain the leg of an article of furniture adapted to be placed adjacent to a door, a rotatable part supported by the said device and constructed and arranged to travel along the floor and to be rotated when the article of furniture ismoved by the door, an element carried by the rotatable part, means actuated by the element to control the action of a mechanical vibratory bell and a mechanical of New York, county and State of New illuminating attachment, in combination York this 22nd day of January, 1917.
