Be it known that we, VSTnPrrmv G. VAN DERBECK and HARRY B. MURDOCK, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Hackensack, in theJ county of Ber'-Y` gen and State of New Jersey, and the borough of Manhattan, countyv o-New York, and Stateof New York, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Electrical Locking Device, of which the following vis a specification.
This invention relates to an electrical locking. device, and provides locking means which is adapted to engage a movable bar, and the latter in turn is connected to means which prevent the propulsion of a :car or the like. f

A casing is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 2O and comprises'thevbottom 21, rear wall 22, front wall 23, end walls 24, 25 and removable top plate 26.
With the' bottom are formed the lugs 27 having the openings 2,8, for screws or bolts to" attach the device to any convenient portion lofthe vehicle with vwhich it is to be used. A spring 102 in the sleeve 94 bears with one end against the sleeve 98 and the other end bears against the block 96. A block of insulating material 104 with the cover 105 of electric conducting material extends from the pin 105n which in turn extends from the piston 98. A pair of flexible electric conductor bars 106, 107 have each one end fastened to the block 96.
An electric wire 110 passes through the sleeve 48 and has one end fastened to one end of the coil of the solenoid 35. An electric battery 111 is in series with the wire 110 and the said wire leads to the electric switch 112. An electric wire 115 leads from the switch 112, passes through the sleeve 48 and is fastened to the binding post 116 of the bar 106. A wire 118 extends from the binding post 120 of the bar 107 and leads to the other end of the coil of said solenoid.
To operate the device the rod 80, which in this instance may be considered the brake rod of an automobile is moved by the operator in the usual way and to lock the brake it controls, it is moved in the direction of the arrow A. In the position of the parts shown in Fig. 1 the heel 56 of the arm 55 is riding on the smooth cylindrical surface of the bar 70. Just after the plate 75 bears against the cap 100, the cover 105 makes Contact with the conductor bars 106, 107, and the electric circuit of the solenoid is closed. Thereby the plunger 50 is drawn in to the solenoid until it meets the stop plug 42. At the same time the heel 56 is moved out of the notches 71 and the rod 80 can be moved to lock the brake of the vehicle, the switch 112 at the same time being closed. When the brake is to be maintained in its locked position the switch 112 is opened and the tension of the spring 66 forces the heel 56 into one of the notches 71. It will be noted that the electric circuit is only closed when the cover 105 makes contact with the conductor bars 106 and 107 and therefore current is only being used when the bar is moved to lock the brake of the vehicle. Vhen it is desired to unlock the brake, the switch 112 is again closed, which energizes thesolenoid 35 and the heel 56 is pulled out of its engaging groove 71. The bar 70 is then moved in a direction opposite to that of the arrow A and the brake of the vehicle is released. The function of the rotatable plates and 76 is to efficiently engage the rod 807 when the latter is parallel to the bar 7 0 or inclined thereto. The axis of the rod can make an angle with the axis of the bar, by slightly separating the pair of stop clamps having the members and 86, when the rod 80 can be located in the forked ends while inclined to the direction of the bar 70. The angularity is presumed to be in the plane in which the bar and rod are indicated in Fig. 1. Also the rod 80 can make an angle with said plane by reason. of the plates 75 and 76 being capable of swinging on the ends of the bar 7 0.
Having thus described our invention what we desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a casing, a solenoid in said casing, a plunger in said solenoid and operated thereby, a latch arm connected to the plunger, a sleeve formed with the said casing, a sliding bar in said sleeve having notches, one of said notches engaged by the latch arm, forked plates on the ends of said bar, the brake rod of a vehicle engaged by said plates and stop blocks on the said brake rod coacting with said plates.
2. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar having keeper notches formed therein, a latch arm pivoted adjacent to said bar, a spring to lock the latch bar with said notches, a solenoid when energized unlocking the latch arm from said notches, a sleeve a@ with a rod slidably guided adjacent to said bar, an electric conductor carried by said sleeve, a plate carried on the bar in the path of said rod moving the latter at predetermined positions of said bar, an electric cir- @e cuit for the solenoid, and electric conductor bars in circuit with said electric circuit and in the path of the conductor carried by the said sleeve.
3. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar having notches, a latch arm pivoted adjacent to said bar with the swinging end thereof contacting with said bar, a solenoid in the device, a plunger slidably located in said solenoid, a non-magnetic link with one end pinned to said plunger and its other end pinned to the latch arm, a spring to force the latch plunger out of the solenoid when the latter is not energized and thereby lock the latch arm with said sliding bar, an electric circuit for the solenoid, means to move the sliding bar, and means to close said electric circuit with the movement of said bar.
4. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar having notches, a latch arm pivoted adjacent to said bar with the swinging end thereof contacting with said bar, a solenoid in the device, a plunger slidably located in said solenoid, a non-magnetic member connecting the said latch arm and plunger, a spring to normally force the latch plunger out of the solenoid when the latter is not energized, a spring actuated sleeve adjacent to the said latch arm, a rod extending from said sleeve, an element on the sliding bar in the path of said rod, the latter being moved with the movement in one direction of said bar, an electric conductor carried by said sleeve, a
pair of electric conductor bars insulated from each other in the path of said electric conductor, and an electric circuit for the solenoid, the said bars in series With the circuit, the said circuit closed With the contacting of said electric conductor and conductor bars.
5. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar having notches, a latch arm pivoted adjacent to said bar and adapted to lock said arm in position, a solenoid coacting With said latch arm, a spring to normally lock said latch arm with said bar, an electric circuit for the solenoid, and an electric conductor moved With the movements of said sliding bar to close said electric circuit and thereby maintain said latch arm unlocked from said sliding bar.
6. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar, means to lock said slidin positions, a plate rotata ly connected to each end of said bar and means to connect a movable element to said plates.
7. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar, means to lock said bar in different positions, a plate with forked ends rotatably connected to each end of said bar to engage a mov- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the bar in different able rod, and stop clamps for the rod to hold it in proper position in said forked ends.
8. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar having grooves formed at the opposite ends thereof, means to lock said bar in different positions, a plate With a forked end rotatably supported on each end of said bar, a pin extending through each plate engaging the groove of its accompanying end of the sliding bar and means to engage a rod With said forked ends.
9. In a locking device of the character described the combination of a sliding bar having grooves at its opposite ends, mechanical means to lock said bar in dierent positions, a plate with a forked end rotatably supported on each end of said bar,'means to rotatably engage each plate With said bar, and means to engage a rod with said forked ends.
