. IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,040, dated January 23, 1872.

SPECIFICATION.

I, PHILIP NIcHoLs, of the city of Troy, in the county of Itensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification:

Nature and Objects of the Invention.

My invention consists of a right-and-lefthand screw, with a fixed spool thereon, in the groove of which works a stay-pin or bolt, which, by keeping the spool in the same plane or position while it is turned to or from the operator, moves the wrench from the center of the cross-bar backward or forward uniformly and evenly, and the beveled form of the inner ends of the jaws is such in their outer verge as to have an additional support from the radial arms of the device; and the combination and arrangement of the spool and stay-bolt in groove thereon with the screw and rightandleft threader-jaws moving on the cross-bar, all acting together, mutually aid the operating parts in being adapted to the nut, and in securing and holding the same in turning.

Figure 1 is a horizontal plane view of my device. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section through the center of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal plane View without the working parts. Fig. 4 is a view of the right-and-left-hand screw and grooved spool fastened thereon. Fig. 5 is a side view of the jaw of the wrench. Fig. 6 is a face view of the same.

General Description.

beveled extremities of which are made to conform to the inclination of the arms. The spool E, fastened in or near the center of the screw, has its grooved surface in line or plane with the stay-pin F. On turning the spool toward the operator the jaws separate; on turning it from him they come together.

What distinguishes my device and renders it superior to devices of that class heretofore in use is this, that, by its peculiar construction, first, in having the rear ends of the jaws beveled to conform to the inclined surface of the arms A A, when the wrench is open to its full extent, these radial arms aid in holding the jaws more securely than when held merely by the right-and-left-hand screw and lever upon which they move; secondly, by using a spool The detachable handle may be either straight or crooked, in forms ordinarily used, and fastened in the ordinary manner, and can be readily adapted to the use required.

The materials in the device may be either of wood or metal, as the manufacturer may desire.

Claim.

The combination and arrangement of the radial arms A, cross-bar or lever B, jaws O G, grooved button or spool E, and stay-pin F, or their equivalents, with a right-and-left-hand screw, D, substantially as described and set forth.
