Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented June 119, isn't.
fip iliceticn filed. January 3. 1916. Serial No. 75,263.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that We, Zrnxnnns FINKEL and IRA Conny, citizens of the United States, and residents of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Pressing-Machines, of
-which the following is a full, true, and eX- act specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in steam pressing machines, and has for its principal object to provide an improved and simplified portable steam pressing machine in which electricity is used as a' heating agent for vaporizing the water and heating the pads.
In the usual pressing machine, it is necessary to locate the machine permanently in one place due to the necessary gas and water piping connections. In our machine, no gas is used, and no Water connections are necessary; The better control of and more uniform heating by electricity makes it preferable to gas.
Other objects will appear as our invention is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of our device. Fig. 2 is a part end elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of the head construction. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of Fig. 1 showing the treadle mechanism.
In referring to the drawings numeral 1 indicates a frame to which is secured the usual Work table 2,. A buck 3 is secured to frame 1 in the usual manner and position as is connnon in machines of this class. Hinged above the buck 8 is head i which folds down on to the buck when operating. The head and buck are usually padded on their working faces to facilitate pressing.
In our improved pressing machine the head is formed of an inclosed tank 5 having a large number of fine perforations 6 in its lower side. The top and edges of the tank are protected by an insulation 7 against heat loss. Insinc and adjacent the lower side of the tank is a perforated sliding plate 8, the perforations being spaced the same as perforations 6, but normally out of register with said perforations 6. Springs 9 along the edge of the tank hold the plate o uuwn against the lower side of the tank. Plate 8 is shifted, so that the perforations register with perforations 6, by links 10 one end of which are pivotally fastened to the plate and the other end to boil crank levers 11 which in turn are secured to a shaft 12. Shaft 12 projects through the edge of tank and is provided ,With a handle 18. The turning of handle 13 slightly shifts the plate 8. Water tank 14; is mounted on head 4 and has a connection 15 intotank 5.- The connection 15 has a back pressure valve 16 in it for the purpose of regulating the flow of Water. Head 4 is raised and lowered by a foot lever 17 and connections 18. A spring 19 normally holds the head in a raised position. Tank 5 electrically operated heating coils22 inside of it, and a cord attachment 21 for connection to a power socket.
A small amount of Water admitted to the tank 5 is converted into steam by the heat ing coils 22 and when the head'is brought into contact with a current on buck 3, the lever 13 is operated to allow the steam to pass out onto the padding of the head as i necessary in steam pressing.
.The buck may be heated if desired 1n a similar manner to the head.
While We have shown a. particular form of embodiment of our invention, We are aware that many mlnor changes therein Will readily suggest themselves to others skilled v in the art Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and We therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.
Having described our invention, What We claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, i
In a steam pressing machine including;' a frame and buck, the combination of a steam generating head hinged to said frame; said head including a tank with aperforated hottom, a similarly perforated plate Within said tank and normally covering the peri'orations of said tank, means for moving said plate until the perforations of said plate and tank register, whereby the steam generated in the head is released when the holesare in register.
