rag-mama m concern Be. it known that" I,..WILLIA1\I'P; Woon, a citizen of the United States. residing-at Roseberry; inthe Province of British Co- .lumbia and'Dom'inion of: Canada, have in- ,vented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels: and-I do hereby declare the following; to be full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will en- 'ahle others skilled in the art to which itappertaiusto make and use the same. TlllS invention relates to a level which may be used'fora ,ertiaining the pitch of e21; purpose for which an ordina; vel is e miloyedt The primary obj eet 0 the i \iention is to provide a level whiq is compiiirati ely simple in construction, nd neludes a body and e r .sjk carried by the hfpral graduations rafters, for laying sewers, wafpr pipes or formed" upon its peril with an indicattoprovideabrake str :t re for retarding (i d disk.
- VVitjh the for'egoin view this invention y "s in such novel features of construe f olnbinatio'n and 111 be herelnafter v d elaimed. In describingthe 111 111011 in detail reference will be had to tie accompanying,
drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding arts throughout h1ch: Figured 1s a side elevation of an improved level showing parts thereof broken away,
1', and l Fig.4 'isa section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.- a
Referring more particula-rl-y'to the drawings; 1 designates the body of the level, which may be construetedof wood, or any suitable material, such 'asis ordinarilyemploye d in'th'e construction of bodies ofya rious typesof levels,
The body 1 of the level is prorided with a recess 2 formed therein centrally of its ends. Metallic plates 3 are secured to the} lower weighted half'11 of the disk 9. A pin Uo yely andabout itsiodyl and further other objects F'giis a top plan view of the level having parts'of the body broken away,
' Fig 3isase'ction on the line 3--3 of'Flg body 1 and form closures for the lower half of the recess 2. The upper half ofthe re-' cess 2, is incl'osed by transparent panes 1 which permit the exhibiting-of'the interior of the upperportion'of the opening, 2. Glass or transparent panes tare properly held in place by any suitable means. The top of the body 1 is provided with a rectangular opening ,5, which has a transparent pane 6 mounted therein to permit of the viewing of the interior of the compartment 2 from the" top.
A pin 7 is 'rotatably supported by the meta-llic plate 3 and has suitable spacing col lars S mounted thereon, wich hold the disk $1 in its proper position upon the pin 7 and prevent l'nofgement of the disk longitu nally of theliin. The disk 9 is constrm'zted ofJany suiu'r le material and it has its up-i per half hol'low as is clearly shown at 10f and its lower half solid, as is shown 'at'11 forproyir ling a weighted bob or rotatable disk. l v I a The upper hollow half 10 of thedisk 9 is" provided lwith grad-nations 12 which are formed about the periphery of'the same or" "on the side'of thedisln as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and also with graduations 13 which are formed upon the rimor periphery ofth e disk, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. ll ations' 13 are 1 visible through 5 in the transparent pane 6, whilf uationsll are visiblethrough thfl ransparent panes 4, The gr-aduations '12; lll l'l are"; provided with a major gradij whih is depignated by zero andaa mains perpendicular to the "horij the axis 'offthe disk owing to t ling of the lower half 11 of the disl. dicating finger 14 is carried ce plly by" the top of the body 1 and is posi ined for:
. alineinent with the major gradlltion 12 for indicating that the surface 11' on whieli the level is placed is perfectly level 0 horii zontal. As the surface upon which the level e gradtr and the degree or angle of theincline mayildfi be determined by the graduation whichra alines with the indicating finger'l l. l A flat spring 15 is carried by the body 1 and has'one end engaging: oneside of the 16 is slidably inserted through one of the plates 3 and has its inner enlarged end engaging the spring 15 for forcing the spring orwardly into frictional engagement with one surface of the disk 9 for retarding the movement of the disk and causing it to come to a rest after the entire level has been moved.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of What is claimed. a
What is c aimed is 1. In a level structur the combination, of a body provided with a centrally disp recess, side plates forming closures for substantially one-half of said recess, a pin supported by said side plates, a disk rotatably mounted upon said pin and having its upper half hollow and its lower half solid, and graduations formed upon each side of said disk about the periphery thereof, and an indicating finger carried by said body and adapted for coaction with said graduations, and means carried by said body for engagement with one side of said disk for arresting movement of the disk.
2. In a level. structure, the combination,
of a body provided with a central opening, side plates forming closures for portions of said openings, a pm carried by said side plates and extending through the openings, a disk rotatably mounted upon said pm, said disk having its upper half section hollow and its lower half section solid for weighting the disk, graduations formed upon the sides of said disk about the periphery of the same, graduations formed upon the periphery of said disk, an indicat- 1 ing finger carried by said bod for coac'tion with said graduations, an transparent panes forming closures for the upper section of said opening, said body bein provided with an opening positioned directly above the uppermost portion of said disk.
3. In a level structure, the combination, of a body provided with a central openin ,side plates forming closures for portions 0 said openings, a pin carried by said side plates and extending through the openings, a disk rotatably mounted upon said pin, said disk having its upper half section hollow and its lower half section solid for weightin the disk, graduations formed upon the si es of said disk about the periphery of, the same, graduations formed'upon the periphery of said disk, an indicating finger carried by said body for coaotion with said graduations, and transparent panes forming closures for the upper section of said opening, said body being provided with an opening positioned directl above the uppermost portion of said dis a flat spring carried by said body and engaging one side of said disk, and a pin slidably carried by said body and engaging said spring for moving said spring into frictional engagementwith said disk for retarding movement of the disk.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
