OUTLET-BOX.
' Application le'd IvJecember 1 0, 1915. Serial No. 66,1730.
To allwho'nt it may concern.'
-Be it known that-I, Josnrii G. RAQUETTE,
citizen .of the United States, residing atVV Cleveland, -in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new y andiuseful- Improvenientsin Outlet-Boxes,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention generally speaking relates' to switch box structure and particularly that class wherein each box is rectangular in configuration jand is provided with removable sides arranged lin a manner suchthat they may be removed and the remaining portion of the box secured to another box `or V'box portion in, a' gangl .More specilically the invention relates t0. a box `comprising a inain body portion whose vends and back are preferably i one piece, and 'whose sides which arejremovably 'secured tothe main-body portion by interl0ok-4 ing hooks and'lugs', one of which, preferably the one at the back of the box,'is secured to l the i'n'ain body portion by a screw or some otliersiinilar lclamping ineens.
' The inventioninay be -furtherbrieiy'suminarized consisting in the construction and combination of parts' hereinafter set `forthA in the followingdrawings, description and claims. y
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1- is a front elevation `of a `single box complete; Fig. 2l is af frontelevati'on of a pair of boxes with their 4adjacent sides removed, said boxes being securedltogether in a gang; Fig. B Zis a horizontal section, through the centerrof `the box shown in Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a similar'view of the two boxes shown inv Fig1 2; Fig. .5 is a view in side elevation l looking at one side of the box; and. F ig. 6
is asimilar view looking at the 'opposite side.4
In the'einbodiment shown in the drawings, 1 ,Iepresents the back of the box connected y inclined portions 2 with the ends 3 and Il.
` l Each of the end portions 3. and 4 is provided lfor supporting any device which may be' with an outwardly extending-lug 5 utilized supplied to thebox, .with screws 6 for receivin suitable box supporting ears 'Land with side engaging hooks. 8 and?, the former extending in a plane in parallelism withthe end but out of alinenient with the end as shown in Fig. 1. The hook 9 is flat and is bent inward atri'ght angles to the plane' of the npper'end of the box as shown in Fig. 1. The 'ipeiiings of' the Spccication ofLetters Patent. Patented 111116,19 1917 hooks 8 are toward the i rear of the box and the openings of the hooks 9 are toward the front of the box'. ,ln`
other words the box body portioiiis pro-l vided with a fiat hook '8 arranged iii parallelismvwith the endfto which it is secured but Vformed out of its plane ywith its open-v ing towardv the rear and with a hook 9 benty up near the side edge of the end at right angles to the (nd with the opening of the hook toward t ie front of the box, siinilar` hooks of the two ends being arranged on the saine side-'of thebox body portion.
The back of)r the box is provided with a threaded opening 10, near tlie'edge of the side having the hooks 8, for a screw 11, while near the opposite edge is-an opening 12 re* ceiving loosely the shank of'a screw 13. The
inetal of the back of the box near this opening 12 is extended to forni two spaced fears 11iwhicli' are formed to the rearyof the plane ofthe back of the box and't'o the `side of the box 'so that they will' overhang the rear of the back of :an adjacent box body portion and' the opening between the ears will be in alnernent with theopenin'g 10 ofsuchl ad `jacent box body portion. lshown iii Fig. 4." I i The box is provided with two sides 15 and '1G and sincethey differ' in structure they is' clearly will be described separately.
The side 15. conforms to the configuration of the side vof the body portion and' is provided at its front corners with notches-17 which receive the Shanks of theihooks' and permit the end portions to extend over the outsidefface of this side plate.' Thehackedge of Vthis side plate 15 is provided with a pair of spaced lugs 18,l shown-in'dotted lines in Fig. 1, and these'extendlat right r angles to the plane of --the sideV and-"are adapted for engagement under the' head of the screw ll'ofpthe boxbody portion. It will be seen ,from the foregoing description e of the side plate 1 5 that when the screw 11 is removed the side plate` 15 may be-applied -rom the rear toward the front by extending it under thehooksvS, when 'the lugsv 18 willengage the back of the box and 'may beV clamped thereagainst by the screw 11.
The opposite side plate 16 of the box provided at its front corners with inwardly in all respectsto extending hooks 19 similar 4 the hooks 8, and these hooks19 are adapted to interlock with the hooks 9 secure the plate at'its front. corners2 whilethe ind los
edge of the plate isl provided with an wardly extending lug 2O having a threaded opening therein' vfor the receptio-`lv thr the opening 12. This screi draw will clamp this sideV firmlyl 'in place. he sideplfate 15 may be removed yfre v'ingthe screw 11 'and sliding the plate tothe rear, whilefthe side )latel may be. removed by withdrawing t e screwrl and pulling the plate Vout toward the front. ,In-connecting the boxes in a gang adjav cent side plates are removed. The user lremovesth'e side plates from unlike sides of Y the 'box in which .casethe hooks of one lwill readily coperatepwitli the hooks ofthe other, securing .the boxes at their front edges, and the lugs 14 at 'thel rear will readily coperate with the screw 11. Time can be saved in manipulating 4the boxes if,
the screw 11' is not entirely withdrawn, .but
ismerely loosenedin the side plate, for when 'it is loosened the side plate may be swung outward at the back vso that itslugs 18 clear the screw4 when the plate maybe removed. i V
It is obvious from the foregoing thatboxes may be joined ina gang verv readily.
Having described myvinvention, claim 1.
