To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FORREs'r E. BINGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements inLiquid Filtering and Delivering Apparatus, of which the following is a specication.
This invention has for its object to provide apparatus adapted particularly to filter oil which has become charged with impurities and foreign matter during its use as a lubricant, and to deliver the iiltered liquid at any suitable point, permitting it to be again used. A
The invention is embodied as a whole in a liquid filtering and ldelivering apparatus -poses of the invention, all which are hereinafter described and claimed. A l l Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication,

In the drawings, 12 represents a vertical spindle'driven by a suitable motor, a portion of the casing of which is shown at 13 in Fig. 1. Any suitable type of motor may be employed adapted to rotate the spindle at a relatively, high rate of speed, say from twelve 'to fifteen hundred revolutions per minute,
A lower bearing for said spindle is shown at 14, said bearing preferably forming a part of the fixed centrifugal -pump casing hereinafter described. An upper spindle bearing is shown at l15, and is preferably provided with a lflange 116 supported as hereinafter described by` thev said pump casing, the bearing 15 being provided with a series of vertical passages 17 (Fig. 7
adapted to permit oil ,to flow by gravity from the bottom of a lilter curb 18 tothe said pump icasing.
J The centrifugal pump casing is of generally circular form, and is preferably composed of a lower section 19 and an upper section 20, said sections being provided with marginal ianges connected. by bolts 21. The opposed sides of the sections are recessed to collectively form a rotor chamber 22 (Fig. 9), a circular oil conducting passage 23 surrounding said chamber, and a passage 24 connecting the chamber 22 and passage 23.
The upper section 2O is provided with an annular seat 25 to which the bearing flange 16 is bolted. .u
The bottom of the curb 18 bears on and is attached to the flange Y1 6, whichA consti tutes a seat for said bottom. The curb bottom is open at itscenter and communicates with the passages 17, which collectively constitute an outlet for filtered oil from the curb 18, and an inlet admitting the filtered oil to the central portion of the rotor chamber. To the upper end of the spindle 12 is attached a collar 26 having a downwardly projecting tubular extension 27 surrounding the bearing 15 and provided 'with an outwardly projectingl flange 28. The Hange extension 27 supports a filter basket and imparts rotation from the spindle to said basket. f
The filter basket, as here shown, 1s composed of a perforated annular inner member 29, a perforated annular outer member 30, and a perforated annular intermediate A plied by winding a layer of cloth on the outer surface of the member 31, thus forming aalaminated filter 33. The members 2-9 and 31, the flanges of which are riveted together at 32, are separable as one part from the member 30, so that the cloth may con-v' veniently be wound on and removed from the member A31 when it is removed from the member 30. The attachment of the outer member 30 to the driving fiange 28 by rivets 32a causes a positive rotation of the said outer member, the frictional connection between the outer member 30 and the intermediate member 31 caused by the lami- .nated filter 33 being sufficient to cause the intermediate and inner members ofthe basket vto rotate with the outer member.
Oil to be filtered is admittedto the filter basket through a hopper or funnel4 34 located on the cover 25 of the curb, and receiving oil throughv a conduit 36.
In the rotor chamber 22 is located a rotor, the form and construction of which are best shown by Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6. Said rotor preferably includes an annular hollow portion 37 having a hub 38 rigidly secured to the spindle, said hub having a tapering oil conducting portion 38a. The rotor also includes an annular top portion 39 which is of dished or frusto-conical form, and is provided with tangential curved buckets 40, eX-. tending across the space between the bottom and top portions- 37 and 39, the rotor being preferably castin a single piece. Said buckets subdivide the space between the portions 37 and 39 into tangential passages through which oil is forced centrifugally outward into the conducting passage 23 surrounding the rotor chamber. The central opening of the rotor section 39 is enlarged,
so that oil conducted from the curb by the vertical passages 174 is discharged within the buckets 40.
'It will now be seen that', when the spindle 12 is rotated, the filter basket and the rotor rotate in unison lwith the spindle, so that oil delivered at the center of the lter basket is thrown 'centrifugally outward into the curb through the filtering materials or bodies above described, they filtered oil owing through the vertical passages 17 into the central portion of the rotor chamber and being then thrown outward centrifugally by the rotor into the oil conducting sage surrounding said chamber an passage 23. Said passage, as shown by Fig. 2, is preferably eccentric to the rotor and is provided with a marginal oil delivering outlet 41, preferably arranged tangentially, said outlet forming a part of a delivering conduit, which may extend to any desired elevated point. The filtered oil may therefore be conducted to an elevated tank and stored therein for further use.
Having described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A liquid filtering and delivering apparatus comprising, in combination, a centrifugal filter basket, a fixed curb inclosing the basket and having a central filtered liquid outlet in its bottom, a. fixed centrifugal pump casing have a liquid inlet communicating with the curb outlet, .and a marginal delivering outlet, a rotor inclosed by said casing and adapted to force liquid from the inlet to the outlet thereof, and a driving spindle engaged with said basket and rotor to simultaneously rotate the same.
2. A liquid filtering and delivering apparatus comprising a fixed casing having a rotor chamber and a liquid conducting passage surrounding said chamber, and provided with.l a marginal outlet, a fixed curb located above said casing and having an outlet communicating with the central `por tion of said chamber and permitting ltered liquid to flow by gravity from the curb to the -rotor chamber, a vertical spindle extending through said chamber into the curb, a centrifugal filter basket located in said curband a rotor located in said chamber, said basket and rotor` being connected with the spindle to rotate therewith, and the rotor and casing constituting a centrifugal pump'whereby liquid thrown centrifugally outward by the basket-in thecurb, and {iowing therefrom to the rotor chamber, is forced centrifugally outward to said passage and throu h the filter to said marginal outlet.
\ 3. liquid filtering and delivering apparatus comprising a fixed casin having a rotor chamber and a liquid con uctin pasprovided with a marginal outlet, a fixed curb located above said casing and having an outlet communicating with the central portion of said chamber and permitting filtered liquid to flow by gravity from the curb to the, rotor chamber, a vertical spindle extending through said chamber into the curb, a sleeve attached to the upper end of the spindle and having a tubular flanged extension projecting downwardly to a point near the- -bottom of the curb, an annularcentrifugal filter basket supported by the said eXtenslon 4. A liquid filtering and delivering appa-- ratus comprising a fixed casing having a rotor chamber, a liquid conducting passage surrounding the chamber and provided with a marginal deliverin outlet, said casing being Composed of a ower section having a lower bearing and an upper section having an enlarged central opening, an upper bearing formed to conduct liquid into said opening, and a seat surrounding said opening, a curb having an apertured bottom attached to said seat, the opening constituting an outlet through which filtered liquid may flow by gravity from the curb to the rotor chamber, a vertical spindle journaled in said bearings, and extending through said chamber and opening into the curb, a centrifugal filter basket located in said curb and a rotor located in said chamber, said basket and rotor being connected with the spindle to rotate therewith.
5. A liquid filtering and delivering apparatus comprising a fixed casing having a rotor chamber and a liquid conducting passage surrounding said chamber and provided with a marginal outlet, a fixed curb located above said casing and having an outlet communicating with the central portion of said chamber and permitting filtered liquid to flow by gravity lfrom the curb to the rotor chamber, a vertical spindle extending through said chamber into the curb, a centrifugal filter basket located in said curb and a rotor located in said chamber and composed of a flat annular bottom portion having a tapering hub attached to the spindle, a dished annular top portion and tangential buckets subdividing the space between the bottom and-top portions into tangential passages adapted to deliver liquid at the periphery of the rotor.
6. In combination, a xed curb having an outlet in its bottom, a fixed vertical bearing projecting into said curb, a vertical spindle journaled in said bearing, a basket-driving flange attached to said spindle and located within said curb, an annular filter basket composed of perforated inner, outer and intermediate members having flanges forming the bottom of the basket, the flange of the outer member being positively secured to said driving flange, while the flanges of the inner and intermediate members are separable with said members from the flange of the outer member, and a laminated filter carried by the intermediate member, and constituting a frictional connection between the said intermediate and outer members, the inner and intermediate members forming an annular chamber adapted to contain loose filtering material.
