Description
)OHN C. CHAPMAN.
HeatingyStov'e.
Patmed'lan. 23, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. CHAPMAN, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,993, dated January 23, 1872.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. CHAPMAN, of Waltham, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Valuable Improvement in Air Chambers for Stoves and Furnaces, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a frontview of a stove with my improved a-inchamber attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of same, showing the connection with the cold-air pipes.
To enable others skilled in the art to use and understand my invention, I will proceed to eX- plain the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
A is an annular or cup-shaped air-chamber, placed within or upon the top of a stove or furnace and over the hre-chamber, with the annular 0r rim portion, A', turned downward so as to catch and receive the full force of the heat. Connecting with this air-chamber are one or more (I generally use two) cold-air pipes leading down through the stove or furnace to its bottom. These pipes P P are openat their lower ends, and, communicating with the cold air, admit a free passage for it into air-chamber above. Into the top of the air-chamber A tits snugly the adjustable cap C, which slides and rests upon the inner plate D of the air-chamber. lt is evident that when the cap C rests upon the plate D the heated air cannot pass from the air-chamber into the funnel F, to be led oi into other apartments. The draught is perfectly closed. It is then only necessary to raise the cap C to admit the heated air into the funnel; and the amount of heated air permitted to pass oif is readily adjustable by raising or lowering the adjustable cap C. The airchamber forms a convenient oven. On the top of cap C I place the funnel F, which connects with the pipes leading, as may be desired, into other rooms or apartments.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Th e air-chamber A, constructed'as described,
vin combination with the adjustable cap C, funnel F, and one or more pipes, P P, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
