According to t'he improvements vof this invention the stationary electrode is insulated at its inner end by an insulating washer carvried by'a cup between which and the igni- I tion plug asbestos or like packing is ar ranged so as to make a gastightjointz and a cup, which is-formed with holes so as to ventilate the air space surrounding the sta^ tionary electrode so as to allow full scope qualitiesl of mica, carries the insulating for expansion and contraction of the dry' air and thus overcome the objections of con* densation of moisture which by saturation or capillary a'ctiondestroys the insulating washer at the outer end'of the said electrode and. this cup is also formed with an extended flange to act asia shield to protect the mica washer from oil splashings and other moisture which permeating the mica layers destroys the insulating properties of same, and a metal collar coated with porcelain, rust proof shellac or the like is arranged on the Washer to minimize the probability of mois .ture setting on same.

In ignition apparatus the combination of a supporting structure having a cavity; an electrode extending therethrough; means for supporting said electrode including an insulating washer holding the electrode spaced away from the walls of the cavity in which it is mounted; and a structurally independent metal collar having a rust proo'l coating mounted on the insulatingwasher surrounding but spaced away from the electrede.

In ignition apparatus the combination of a plug having an opening therethrough; an electrode passing through said opening; insulating washers adjacent each end of the electrode; with removable cup shaped journal members receiving the washers and engaging the plug in positions to hold the eloctrode spaced away from the walls of the opening. 4

In ignition apparatus the combination of a plug having two openings therethrough; an uninsulated electrode passing through and closely fitting one 0l said openings and having a projecting foot; journals adjacent the ends of the other opening; insulating washers mounted respectively in said journals; an electrode passing through the opening and held hy the washers away from the walls thereof in position to he engaged by the foot ot' the first electrode, said second electrode having a head at that end adjacent the foot of the other electrode; and means at the opposite end of the second elec. trode engaging one of the insulating washers to clamp the journals; washers and electrode in place, there being VVentilating passages through the outer one of the journals opening into the cavity in which the second electrode is mounted.
