Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT omen.
FREDERICK BREBETOH HOLT, OF .AINTBOBUS, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOB TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
v KNIFE-BLADE SWITOH.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented June 12, 1917.
Application message as, 1915, sees in. 41,883. new August at, an. Serial No. 116,837.
To all whom it ma'y concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK B. Hour, a sub ect of the King of England, and a resident of Greenfield Farm, Antrobus,in the" county of Chester and country of England,
have invented a new and useful Improveinent'in Knife-Blade Switches, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to electric switches and 1t has for its object to provide jaw members of an improved construction forlmifeblade switches; In nfy invention the terminal members are formed of a continuous piece of strap copper that extends from the front to the back of the panel or base, the bus-bars or other connections being attachedto the strap at th'eback and the jaw member of the switch beingattached to the strap at the front; the resistance is thereby considerably reducedand the manufacture very much'cheapened. Astrapof copper or other good conducting material is bent to a 'U-shape and its limbs are f assed through slots formed in the panel or 'a'se so that th bent portion or bottom of the u shaped member is on the front thereof. Between the bottom of the U-shaped member and piece, preferably of drawn copper, is'provided, which fills up the intervening space this filling piece is secured to the bottom of the U-shapedmember by rivets so that a solid block is formed. Slots are then milled in this block-that extend completelythrough the bottom of the U-shaped strap into the filling-piece for the reception of the fixed aw members of theswitch. The jaw me'mers are secured by rivets passing throu h the strap, and, by reason; of the fact that t e slots extend completely through the latter, a very close contact between the jaw members and the strap may be obtained. The strap,
filling-piece and aw members may then be sweated or solderedtogether;
The complete jaw-member thus const1-' tuted is secured to the panel by bolts that project from behindthrough oles 1n the panel into tapped holes in the filling-piece, and a ring may be provided around the aw member on the Front so as to hide the rough edges of the slots through which thelimbs of the U-shaped members are passed and thus ive a neat appearance.
In the accompany ng drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a kmfe-blade the panel, a fillingor rin although specially single blade, and I the appended claims.
both the hinge-jaw members and teak-jaw membersof the switchshown in Fig. 1, it'
will be necessary to describe 'onl the breakaw members by we of examp e.
Two pieces, 1 an 2, of stra c0 per are bent to U-shape and the paralle lim 3 and 4 thereof are-passed through holes 5 and 6, respectively, in the panel, the bottom 7 of the U- haped member being in the front of '10 the same, Between the bottom of the U- shaped member and'the panel is disposed a filling-plece 8 that is secured by rivets 9 to the bottom of the U'shaped member. The inner ends of break-jaw members 10 are irserted in slots 11 that are cut com letely through the bottom 7 of'the U-shape piece and into the said filling piece 8. The jaw members are seeured'in position by rivets 12. Bolts 13 project throu the panel from behind and are threa' de into tapped holes 14 in the filling iece 8, to thus secure the com, plete termina firmly to the panel. A frame- 15' is secured to'the terminal in an suitab e manner, in order to hide the rou edges of the slots5 and 6.
The construction of myinvention shown,
I intended for multipleblade knife-blade switches, may obviously be employed for the fixed terminals or jaw. members of knife-blade switches having a j desire-that only such limitationsbe imposed as are set forth in I claim as my invention: 1. In a knife-blade switch, the combination with a base member and jaw members, of a U-sha ed conducting strip, inserted through the guise membenand a conducting blockinserted'between the base member and the U-shaped strip, said U-shaped strip and the conducting block being slotted to receive the jaw members. V
2. In a knife-blade switch, the combination with a base member and jaw members, of a U-shaped conducting strip inserted through the base member, and a conducting block inserted between the base memberand the U-shaped strip, said U-haped strip and the conducting block being slotted to receive the jaw members,
said jaw members, U- shaped strip and conducting block bein sweated together to insure good electrica contact.
' of a U-shaped member inserted therein, a conducting-block disposed between the U 3. The combination with abase member, of a U-shap'ed'member inserted therein, a conducting block disposed between the U- shaped member and the base member, and a plurality of condu'ctin "members dis osed in slots cut in the said%ilock and in t e U- shaped. member.
4. 'Thecombination with a Phase member,
shaped member and the, base member, means for securing the block to the base member,
. shaped member and the base member, and
conducting strips disposed in corresponding slots .in theconductmg memberand in the I shape the legs of which are adapted 'to ex- U-shaped member.
6. A terminal stud comprising'a U-shaped member, a conducting. block secured to the U-shapedmember at itsinne'r side, conducting strips disposed in corresponding slots 1n the conducting block and in the U-shaped member, and means for securing the con-' ducting strips in position.
7. Thecombination with a base member, of amember of substantially U-shape 1nserted therein, and a plurality of conducting members-disposed in slots cut in the said member of substantially U-sha e.
-8; The combination. with a ase member, of a member of substantially U-shape 1nserted therein, and a contact member se-i member'of cured in-a slot cut inthe said substantially U-shape.
inner side,
base member,
ring the said member of;
9. A terminal stud comprisin a member, of'substantiall urshape, a blocl secured to the member 0 substantially U-shape at its and a contact member disposed in correspondingslots in the block and the member of substantially U-shape.
31 0. The combination with a' base member, of a conducting member hayin a main portron and two egs that exten through the and a contact member disosed in a slot 11.- .The combination with a base member, of a substantially flat conducting member having its end. portions'so bent as to constitute legs that are adapted to extend through v the base member,- and a contact inember'seoured to the said flat conducting member;
12. The combination with a, base member, of a conducting member of substantiall U- in the said conducting memshape insertedtherein, means for rein orcsubstantially 'U- shape, and a conducting member disposed in slots cut in the said member of substantia'lly U-shape andin its reinforcing means. 13. The combination witha base member,
of a conducting member of substantially U- tend through the-base member, and contact conducting member of substantially U- shape.
14. The combination with a base member,-
of a conducting membcr of substantially U-' shape the legs of-which are adapted to' ex-' tend through the base member, means for se- 'members operatively" secured to the said curing the conductingmember to thebase FREnER IcK BRERETO HOLT.-
