To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. SWARTZ and EDWARD H. WAUGH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to coating machines and more particularly to a mechanism for decorating or ornamenting confections although the invention is equally applicable for producing characters 011 other objects.
The primary aim of our invention 18 to provide a machine or mechanism of the above nature which will efficiently operate to decorate an article. i
A further object resides in the novel .character or pattern means which determines the design reproduced, the samebeing changeable or capable of being replaced by different means to provide other ornamentations.
Other objects will appear as the description progresses, and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which we desire protection, succinctly defined in our annexed claims.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein likecharacters of reference designate like parts throughout:

Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 denotes the kettle or melting pot into which the ingredients constituting the coating to be applied are put. A hot water jacket 2 surrounds kettle 1 for heating the coating material in the latter, the temperature of the water in said jacket being raised by a heat supply means 3. The kettle is supported on frame a in a plane above reservoir 5 whereby the material may be discharged by gravity through spout 6 upon manipulating lever 8 to bring the opening 7 of cut-ofi or valve 7 into registering relation with the spout.
Reservoir 5 is water jacketed, as at 9, and provided with a heater 9 for maintaining the desired temperature of the coating material, said reservoir comprising end compartments 5, 5 leading to a central transverse trough 10. Each end compartment is provided with spaced, longitudinally arranged channels or troughs 11 disposed in alinement with the corresponding channels of the opposite end compartment and being approximately of the same depth as central trough 10. Journaled in the end walls of the reservoir are shafts 12 which support for operation in channels 11 spiral agitators 13, 18 for maintaining a thorough mixture of the coating material. These agitators are spaced centrally on the shafts as the latter span trough l0 and are also spaced from the adjacent end walls of reservoir 5 to permit of an unobstructed passage for the coating liquid through end troughs 14.
The end portions of shafts 12 are extended through one end wall of reservoir 5 and provided with spiral gears 15 which mesh with similar gears 16 carried on a shaft 17 driven from a second shaft 18, through the worm gears 19, by motor 20. The opposite terminal of the center shaft 12 is extended through the contiguous end wall to drive, through bevel gears 21, a vertical shaft 22 extending upwardly through a central boss 23 formed in kettle 1 and carrying a stirrer or beater 24 whose function is to thoroughly mix the constituents of the coating material. A clutch 25 operatively connects motor 20 to shaft 18, as is apparent.
Reference numeral 26 designates an outlet passage from trough 10 to a pump 27 which impels the coating material therefrom through opposing discharge spouts 28. These spouts are spaced to permit of a candy passing therebetween and arranged so as to thoroughly coat the confection. Pump 27 is driven by shaft 27 which is ope 'atively connected with shaft 17 by spiral gearing 27.
The confection carrying frame comprises a central sleeve support 29 mounted for vertical and rotary movement on the superstructure 30 of frame 41, and pairs or sets of carrying arms 31, of bell crank formation, pivoted to outstanding ears 32 of the central support. The outer terminals of arms 31 are provided with fingers or prongs 35 on which the confection is deposited and pass between the opposing spouts 28 when central support 29 is rotated.
Reference character 36 denotes cam wheel, which we shall hereafter term master wheel, the same being supported on a depending stub l of frame 4 and having a rotary movement imparted thereto by shaft 17 through a seXtuple threaded worm 37 meshing with worm 38 of the master wheel. The latter is provided with a cam groove 39 of suitable design for oscillating follower lever 40 pivoted, as at 11, to 21. depending lug 42 of frame 1. The opposite terminal of lever 40 is connected, as by link as, to one end of shifter arm 1 1 pivoted to superstructure 30, as at 15, the opposite end portion 4L4 of said arm at being bifurcated to engage in annular groove 16 of central support 29 of the confection carrying frame whereby the latter may be lowered and raised, for reasons hereinafter made apparent.
A collar 47 is supported for rotary movement on a hollow depending boss 30 of structure 30 through which central support 29 operates and carries a projecting arm 48 from which depends support l9 for a spring actuated pawl 50. This pawl engages a ratchet portion 51 of the central support, said ratchet portion being elongated to per mit of independent vertical movement thereof without disengaging the pawl therefrom. The projecting arm 18 is connected by link 52 to an arm of hollow rock shaft 5-3 through which latter link 13 operates. The lower end portion of shaft is toothed, as at 5st, and-meshes with rack portion 55 of a slide bar. 56 connected for sliding movement, to one arm of a follower bell crank lever 57, the other arm operating in a suitably designed cam groove 58 of the master wheel for rotating the central support 29.
The confection is deposited on the fingers of arms 31 when the latter are in the position of those to the extreme left in Figs. 1 and 2. Lever 57 is then struck by c'am portion 58' which imparts to the carrying frame a one eighth turn, or movement sufficient to bring the confection, supported on the fingers, between the opposing spouts 28 to there receive its coating. Cam portion 58 then actuates the lever 57 to complete the quarter turn whereby another confection may be deposited on the succeeding pairs of arms. The second confection is advanced to receive its coating and then further advanced by the succeeding cam portions 58 and 58, re spectively, to bring the first confection to the extreme right position in Fig. 1 where it is marked with a design of a desired character by the mechanism hereinafter set forth.
After the confection is marked, the carrying frame is lowered by the succeeding cam portion 39 operating lever 40. While in lowered position, the arms 31 supporting the finished product are opened to deposit the latter on conveys-r plates 59. This opening movement of the arms is accomplished in the following manner. Support 29 is provided with slidably mounted pins 60 normally engaging the segments 34: of thearms andare adapted to be projected to exert pressure against said segments for opening the arms by a lug 61 carriedby vertical shaft 62 which is mounted for oscillatory movement in cen tral support 29. Link 63 connects outstanding arms' of shafts 62 and 6% together, the latter shaft being hollow and interposed between link 13 and rock shaft 53. The lower end portion 65 of shaft 64 is in the form of a pinion which meshes with rack portion 66 of slide bar 67, the latter being connected to one arm of follower bell crank lever 68 which operates in cam groove 69 of the master wheel.
A spring actuated dog 70 mounted on the superstructure 30 engages the ratchet portion 51 to prevent backward movement of the confection carrying frame. The spaced lugs 71 receive one pair of arms 31 when the frame is lowered to prevent the latter from any rotar movement whatever.
Reference numeral 72 indicates a supply receptacle or magazine for the conveyer plates 59. Each plate is preferably an elongated flat body provided in its rear end portion with a notch 73 in which engages one of the pins 74 of an endlesschain 75 for advancii'ig the engaged plate through discharge slot 76, beneath the point of deposit of the coated confection and thence across table 77 to the transverse spaced endless chains 77 which remove the filled plates from the path of the succeeding ones. Sprockets 78, which support chain 75, are carried on shafts 7 9, one of the latter receiving intermittent movement through pawl 80 engaging ratchet 81 of said shaft as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and said pawl being supported on an oscillatory sleeve 82 on the shaft. Link 83 connects one arm of follower bell crank lever Sl, which operates in cam groove 85 of the master wheel, to an upstanding arm 86 of said sleeve 82 for imparting the desired movement to the latter. Chains 77 are each provided with pins 87 to engage the conveyer plates for moving the same laterally across table 77, said plates being guided from guide-way 88 across said chains by the ledge 89 of the table. Sprockets 90, supporting chains 77, are carried on shafts 91 which receive intermittent motion from shaft 7 9 through bevel gearing 92.
The mechanism employed in decorating the coated confection comprises, broadly, a fluid delivery or character forming means and means to direct the latter over the confection in a predetermined path. The fluid delivery means comprises a flexible tubing or conductor 93 extending upwardly from a nipple 94 and terminating in a downwardly directed discharge nozzle 93 disposed directly above the point of deposit of the coated confection. The decorating fluid or material is supplied to the tube 93 by pump 95 connected to reservoir 5 by conduit 90 and to nipple 94 by conduit 97 Pump 95 is continuously driven by an extension of one of the shafts 12 whereby on opening cut-off 98 the fluid will issue immediately from nozzle 93, as is obvious. The cut-0E 98 is employed to govern the flow of fluid through tube 93 and receives a reciprocatory movement through cam disk 99 operating follower 100 of said cut-off, said cam disk being carried on vertical shaft 101 which receives rotary motion from shaft 17 through bevel gearing 102.
The means for directing the tube 93 over the confection consists of a design cam disk 103 carried on shaft 101, and follower levers 10A, 105, pivotally mounted on bosses 106, 107 respectively, of frame 4. Said lever 105 is of hell crank formation and pivotally connected by link 108 to directing lever 109 which connects lever 104. to the nozzle 93. The follower levers yieldingly engage cam disk 103 through the instrumentality of coiled spring 110 connecting directing lever 109 to bar 111 supported on the bosses 106, 107. For the purpose of illustration we have shown a design cam disk capable of producing the letter L, although a cam member for any other character or pattern may be substituted with equally as good results to thereby eifect a different combination of movements of the nipple.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a carrier plate, means for giving said plate an intermittent feed movement, a depositing nozzle, and nozzle controlling means comprising a plurality of pivoted levers connected to move the nozzle in diifering directions, and a single cam means actuating said levers from points angularly separated upon the cam.
2. A pattern forming device of the character described, comprising a movable nozzle, a lever secured to and controlling the movement of the nozzle, two pivoted levers having actuative connection with the nozzle controlling lever at points respectively separated lengthwise the lever, and a single cam acting upon said pivoted levers at points angularly separated upon the cam.
3. A pattern forming device of the character described, comprising a movable discharge nozzle, means for delivering the pattern forming material thereto, a cut-off device controlling the flow-of said material, a cam-disk controlling said cut-01f, a former cam rotative with said disk, a plurality of pivoted levers actuated by the former cam from separated points upon its periphery, and actuating connections from said pivoted levers to the nozzle.

In an apparatus of the character described, a pattern forming member, a lever connected with and adapted to move the pattern forming member, a plurality of levers connected with the first named lever, and a removable pattern cam for actuating all said last named levers each from a point thereon angularly separated from the others.
