ARTICLE-LOCK.
Application filed September 11, 1916.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
15 e it known that I, WVILLIAM F. SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to article locks for securing articles to a suitable support, the present embodiment being designed for a robe or coat lock for mounting in motor vehicles, and an object of the invention is to provide a construction which may be quickly adjusted to firmly grip or clasp the article to prevent the surreptitious removal of the same from the vehicle.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article lock constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a section through the grip de vice and a slide on which it is pivotally mounted Fig. 8 is a partial section at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view of another embodiment of a grip device; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of another flexible clamping member which is adapted to be used with the grip device shown in Fig. 4:.
According to the present embodiment of the invention, two clamping members 1 and 2 are provided. The clamping member 1 is preferably rigid and is secured by feet 3 in spaced relation to a support 1 of any suitable construction, one end of the clamping member being turned laterally at 5 and having the clamping member 2 secured to the laterally-turned portion at one end preferably by a hinge or pivot 6 The clamping member 2 is preferably flexible being made in this instance of metallic tape.
Movable on the clamping member 1 toward and from the secured end of the flexible member 2 is a slide 6 which carries a grip device for engaging the flexible member. The grip device comprises preferably a casing 7 pivoted at 8 to the slide 6, and carrying an internal stationary jaw 9 past Specification of Letters Patent.

which the flexible member 2 is guided by the walls of slots 10 in the casing. The face of this stationary clamp corrugated and with this corrugated face a movable clamping member 11 cooperates, said member 11 being guided within the casing 7 and operated upon by a cam or eccentric 12 which is secured to the barrel 13 of a key-controlled lock 14 of any known construction, the turning of the key causing the turning of the barrel and the eccentric. A spring 14 within the casing 7 acts on the movable jaw 11 to move the same in opposite direction to the eccentric 12.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. t and 5, a flexible member 2 is provided with openings 2 which are adapted to receive one or more bolts 15 carried by a movable member 11 of the grip device shown in Fig. 41, the movable member being operated by the eccentric 12 in the manner shown in embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2. The bolts 15 are yieldingly mounted on the member 11 being acted upon by individual springs 16. At their ends the bolts coiiperate with the stationary jaw 9 and are beveled at 17 in order to facilitate the in-- troduction of the flexible tape 2 when the jaw 11 is shifted to locking position by the eccentric 12. This arrangement also permits the tightening of the tape after the grip device has been locked, the tightening being effected by pulling upon the free end of the tape and causing the latter to bear against the beveled ends 17 so that the bolts 15 yield inwardly.
An article lock constructed in accordance with this invention is inexpensive to manufacture and simple in operation. It will effectively grip or clamp a blanket or garment so as to prevent the removal, of the latter. It is adjustable to correspond to the size of the article gripped, and the flexible member bends to conform to the shape of the article.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. An article lock comprising a pair of clamping members, one of which is hinged to the other, and a key-controlled grip device adjustable on both members toward and from the hinge to hold them against separation.
2. An article lock comprising two clamping members, one of which is flexible and is secured to the other at one end, the other end being free, and a grip device adjustable on the other member toward and from the secured end of the flexible member to grip said flexible member at diflferent points from its secured end.
3. An article lock comprising two clamping members, one of which is rigid and the other of which is flexible and is secured to the rigid member at one end, the other end being free, and a device adjustable 011 the rigid member toward and from the secured end of the flexible member and carrying means for gripping the flexible member.
4. In an article lock, the combination with a flexible member, of a grip therefor comprising two members, one of which is stationary and the other of which is movable, an eccentric for moving the movable member, and a key barrel to which said eccentric is secured.
5. An article lock comprising two clamping members, one of which is rigid and the other of which is flexibleand is secured at one end to the rigid member, its other end being. free, a slide movable on the rigid mem- 2' her toward and from the secured end of the flexible member, and a grip device for en-' gaging the flexible member, said grip device being pivotally connected to the slide.
6. An article lock comprising a pair of 3 clamping members, one of which is hinged to the other, and a member secured to and shiftable on one of said members toward and from the hinge and carrying a grip device for gripping the other member to hold the 3 two members against separation.
7. An article lock comprising a flexible metallic tape member secured at one end, and a device for gripping said tape'member away from its secured end, said grip device 4 being pivotably mounted to permit the grip device to shift to accommodate itself to the position of the tape member.
