To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Josnrr-r J. HEEL- nAUnn, aA citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, county of Queens, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automobile-Horns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile horns and has for its object to produce a horn which is durable, simple in construction and easy to manufacture. It further has for its object to produce a horn in which the disk-operating parts are all mounted on and carried by the rear member of the horn. It further has for its object to provide a horn in which the casing, while it supports the diaphragm, does not have to be provided with a projecting ange for the purpose of holding the diaphragm. It further has` for its object to provide a horn with universal clamping means. It further has for its object to provide novel means for centering the diaphragm upon the casing. It further has for its object to produce a horn in which the projections on the face of the agitating member are stamped out and formed upon a press, the projections having the general shape of exposed por'- tions of embedded balls. It further has for its object to provide a simple and efficient means whereby sections of pinion wires may be firmly secured to the parts driven by the pinions formed therefrom.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a horn embodying my invention with the front portion and diaphragm removed;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in my horn there is a cup-shaped rear member 1, upon which is mounted a gear wheel 2 whose revolving spindle or shaft 3 passes through the rear member l. To this shaft is connected the actuating means et.. This actuating means can be moved in either direction to operate the horn. It is provided with a spring 5 which normally tends to retract it to a normal intermediate position, from which it can be moved in either di reotion to actuate the horn. 4i is the handle of the actuating member, which in the form shown in Fig. l is long enough to extend to the dash when the horn is located within the hood. It is connected to the actuating member by a universal joint 4t2 so that it can be used when at an angle to the shaft.
Mounted upon the inside of the base is ay spring 6 which bears upon the inner end of the spindle 3 which carries the iirst driving gear. This presses the driving gear toward the rear of the case so as to take up any lost motion and prevent rattling. Mountedupon a Xed second spindle is a gear-wheel 7 and a pinion 8 which meshes with the first gear 2; and mounted upon a third and fixed spindle 7 is the agitating device 9, which is also provided with a pinion having teeth l0, said pinion meshing with the second gear wheel 7 The pinions of these two members are made from pinion wire, which is cut off in suitable lengths, the front portions being slightly turned down so as to produce shoulders l0 thereon as shown in Fig. 9. The members 7, 14 and 10 are provided with holes l1 and internally projecting lugs ll, which enter one or more of the grooves between the ribs 102 in the reduced portion o-f the cut off pinion wire section so as to prevent relative rotation of the pinion and its member. The forward portions of the projections upon the pinion member are swaged down as at l2 so as to clamp the pinion securely to its member.
The spindle 7 is provided with a head and has its end screw-threaded. It is screwed into a threaded hole in the rear member. To its projecting end a lock nut 72 is applied. The spindle for the gear 7 is similar to the spindle 7 except that it is shorter.
The agitating member 9 is backed by one device the pinion member 10 extends through both the portions 16 and 9 and its projections are swaged down to hold them together. These parts, after this sWaging, are then case-hardened so as to produce hard agitating surfaces as Well as a durable pinion. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the actuating member is provided With a handle 30 rigidly fixed thereto as is desirable When the horn is to be mounted near the drivers seat or upona motor cycle.
