REGISTER-ACTUATING MECHANISM.
Be it known that I, SYVER Lon, a citizen lie, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Register-Actuating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same- Broadly, my present invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly efficient device for transferring vibratory motion into rotary motion. Par ticularly, it has for its object to provide an improved device for actuating the registers,
which involve a plurality of wheels arranged to carry in a decimal order from one to the other.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate likepartsthroughout the several views.

The register which may be assumed to be of the Veeder type, has a casing 1 within which is a plurality of'register wheels 2 of well known construction and'arrangement. The unit member of the register wheels 2 is connected, as shown, by a toothed or serrated hub 3, tov an escapement wheel 4 which has a plurality of circumferentially spaced laterall projecting escapementlugs 5 that are V-s aped in the plane of the said escapement wheel. y I

the upper pallet will engage an overlying escapement lug or tooth 5 and impart a half step movement to the escapement wheel, and
-movement to the said escapement wheel.
One complete two-step escapement movement will move the escapement wheel one tenth of a complete rotation, or far enough to register one unit of movement on the unit wheel 2 of the register.
The pointed form of the escapement lugs 5 and of the pallet 7 makes it impossible for the escapement lever to become locked, against proper oscillatory movements.- When one pallet is moved out of engagement with one escapement lug, the other pallet is moved" into engagement with a diametrically opposite escapement lug, and in fact,
the engagement of the one pallet with an escapement lug will start a movement of the escapement wheel before the other pallet is moved from between the two opposite escapement lugs, which action is clearly shown in Fig. 2. When the lever is in an extreme position, one of its pallets will engage solidly between two escapement lugs and securely hold the escapement wheel, against movement in either direction.
, By reference particularly ,to Fig. 3, it will be noted that both ends of the lever 6 lie in the same plane, while the pallets are offset just far enough for engagement with the escapement lugs of the escapement wheel.
The purpose of the teeth or serrations 3 and hub or shaft of the unit member of'the register wheels, is to facilitate re-setting of the register, simply by drawing a thin strip of wood, the edge of a card board, or the like, over the said hub, thereby imparting rapid backward rotation to the unit member of the register wheels. Such backward movement will, ofcourse, cause a rapid vibration of the escapement lever since the beveled form of the backs of the escapement lugs and of the faces of the pallets 7 are such as to produce a camming action required to vibrate the'lever.
In practice, I have found that the V- per ect satisfaction, whereas, an escapement wheel with studs or round projections or pins will frequently lock the lever against vibration and prevent thedesired operation of the escapement device.
