Description

1. DE PAUL & R. DI FALCO.
NUT LOCK.
APPLlCATlON FILED JULY 3,19l6. 1,2293%. Patented June 12, 1917. g W

NUT-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OI-IN DE PAUL and RAYMOND DI FALGO, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Koppel, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference beng had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to nut locks and has for its principal object the production of a locking means which is carried wholly within the nut whereby the same will be protected.
Another object of this invention is the production of a pivotally mounted pawl which is adapted to engage a fish plate so as to prevent a nut from accidentally rotating upon its bolt.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the nut showing the same partly in section.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the fishplate.
Fig. 5 is a section showing the manner in which the pawl engages the fish plate.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the pawl.
Fig. 7 is a section showing how the pawl is carried by the nut.
By referring to the drawing by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the fish plate upon which is mounted the nut 2 by means of the bolt 3. It will be seen by referring especially to Fig. 1 that a pawl 4 is pivot-ally mounted within the nut 2 by means of the bolt 5. It will also be seen that the pawl is provided with the aperture 6 and the knob 7. The spring 8 which is adapted to fit in the pocket 9 bears down upon the pawl 4 so as to normally hold the same within the slots 10 upon the fish plate 1. It will also be seen that the pin 11 is adapted to go through an aperture provided Specification of Letters n Patented June 12, 1917..
Application filed July 3, 1916.

upon one face of the nut and over the knob 7 provided upon the pawl so as to more firmly hold the pawl within the pocket 10.
It should be noted that the spring 8 is adapted to bear upon the pawl a at its ezitreme free end so that the greatest possible leverage will be obtained in holding the pawl in its locking position. It will also be noted that when it is desired to screw this nut upon the bolt 3 that the pawl 4: is first pushed up into the groove 12 and the pin 11 is placed in engagement with the aperture 6 whereby the pawl will be held within the groove 12, and when the nut is in tight engagement with the fish plate, the pin may be pulled out so as to allow the pawl to spring in engagement with the slot 10 after which the pin 11 may be inserted in the aperture provided upon the face of the nut and over the knob 7 as is described above. It will also be noticed that when the pin 11 is inserted for locking purposes that the same will engage the knob 7 and will not bear upon the spring 8. Another purpose of this knob is to prevent the displacement of the spring for the same might have a natural tendency to bend into the groove 12.
From the above description it will be clearly seen that a simple nut lock has been produced whereby the locking mechanism is wholly within the nut, and that not only sprin means have been provided for hold ing the pawl in engagement with the fish plate, but that a pin may also be inserted for holding the pawl out of engagement I with the fish plate and also holding the pawl securely in engagement with the fish plate.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the class described, the combination of a nut, provided -with a groove running parallel with its inner face, said nut provided with a pocket extending at right angles to its inner face, a pawl pivotally mounted within said groove, a spring carried within said pocket, said spring adapted to press upon the free end of said pawl, said pawl provided with a knob carried upon its upper face and adjacent its free end, said spring adapted to engage said knob so as to positively keep said spring in engagment with the free end of said pawl, said pawl provided upon itsfree as to keep said pawl in a locked position end with an aperture, and apin adapted to without injuring said spring. 1
go through an aperture provided upon said In testimony whereof we hereunto aifix 10 nut and through the aperture provided upon. our signatures.
, said pawl whereby said pawl may be held out of engagement with a fish plate, lsaid JOHN DE PAUL. pin also adapted to pass over said knob so RAYMOND DI FALGO.
