To all fr0/wm t may concern Be it known that I, EnwIN MAURER, a citizen of the United States, residing at J amaica, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State oi' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broeders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specilication.
This invention relates to brooders, and has for its object to provide improved means for heating and Ventilating such inclosures.
Another object is to provide means in connection with the brooder for permitting the chicks to exercise in the fresh air. A further object is to provide for restricting the size of the compartlnent for the chicks in the brooder. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically deiined in the claims at the end of the description.

The main inclosure 1 of the brooder is preferably rectangular in form and is provided with extensions 2 made of wire mesh material at either side. Said extensions 2 constitute exercising yards for the chicks and are provided with hinged closures 3 permitting entrance and escape of the chicks when desired.
One or more V-shaped heating chambers are supported within the inclosure 1 from the tops thereof so as to run from one end of said inclosure to the other. Said heating chambers consists of outer plates 4 bent into V-shape, and other plates 5 similarly formed and arranged within the V-shaped plates 4, the heating chambers being formed between the plates 4 and 5. The plates 4 are secured to the top of the inclosure 1 by rivets 6 and, as shown in Fig. 1, two or more of said V-shaped plates 4 may be made of a single piece of material suitably' bent to form connecting portions 7 between adjacent heating chambers, said portion 7 being likewise secured to the top of the inclosure 1 by rivets 6. The inner plates 5 are fastened to the top of the inclosure 1 by rivets 8.
Heated air is supplied to the heating chambers from any suitable source through a main pipe 10, Figs. 2 and 4, and branch pipes 9. One of the branch pipes enters each of the heating chambers at one end thereof and between the apexes of the V- i shaped plates 4 and 5, as indicated in dotted lines on Fig. -1. rlhe dead heat from said chambers escapes through pipes 11 at the opposite end of the inclosure. One of said pipes 11 communicates with each of the branches of the V-shaped heating chambers near the top thereof and, as shown in Fig. 2, said pipes 11 may beconnected by pipes 12 leading to adjustable ventilators 13 by means of which the escape of the dead heat may be regulated as required.
The temperature within the inclosure 1 below and around the heating chambers may be automatically regulated by means of a vent pipe 14 in the top of the inclosure, said pipe being fitted with a cap 15 carried by a lever 16 pivoted to a fixture, as at 17, and controlled by a thermostat 18, Fig. 4. The lower portions of the sides of the inclosure 1 are open to permit the chicks to pass back and forth from said inclosure into the yard 2. These openings are provided with curtains 23 to retain the heat within the inclosure 1. Said inclosure may be separated into two compartments by an adjustable partition 19 having V-shaped notches 2O in its upper edge portion to fit around the V-shaped heating chamber. The partition 1 9 is retained in a vertical position by means of notches 21 in its lateral edges engaging ledges 22 projecting inwardly from the sides of the inclosure 1 above the openings leading to the yard.
As suggested in Fig. 5, the V- shaped plates 4 and 5 forming the heating chambers may be made in sections with telescoping rings 90, whereby the length of said plates and chambers may be varied to suit requirements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. In a brooder, the combination with an inclosure of a V-shaped heating chamber depending from the top of said inclosure and consisting ofspaced V-shaped plates, means for supplying heated air to the lower portion of said V-shaped chamber between the apeXes of the two plates, and means for permitting the escape of the heated air :from said chamber.
2. In a brooder, the con'ibination with an inclosure, of a V-shaped heating chamber depending from the top of the inclosure and consisting of spaced V-shaped plates, means for supplying heated air to said chamber, and an outlet for the heated air communicating with the upper portion of each branch ci' said V-shaped chamber.
3. In a brooder, the combination with an inclosure, of a V-shaped heating chamber depending from the top oi the inclosure and consisting of spaced V-shaped plates, means for supplying heated air to said chambei between the apexes of the two plates, and an outlet for the heated air communicating with the upper portion of each branch of said V-shaped chamber.
4;. In a brooder, the combination with an inclosure, of a pluralityT of V-shaped heating chambers depending from the top of the inclosure and consisting of a single outer plate bent to form a plurality of V-shaped portions and connecting portions between said V- shaped portions, and inner V- shaped plates spaced from the V-shaped portions of the outer plates.
5. In a brooder, the combination with an inclosure, .of a pair of V-shaped heating chambers depending from the top of the inclosure and consisting of a single outer plate bent to form two V-shaped portions and a connecting portion between said V- shaped portions, separate V-shaped inner plates arranged within and spaced from each of the V-shaped portions of the outer plate, and an eXit for heated air from the interior of the inclosure below the heating chambers, said exit communicating with the portion of said inclosure between the two V -shaped chambers through the top of the inclosure and the connecting portion of said lower plate.
6. In a broeder, the combination with an inclosure, of a sinuous heating chamber depending from the top of the inclosure and consisting of spaced sinuous plates, means for supplying heated air to said chamber, and an outlet for the heated air communicating with the upper portion of said sinuous chamber.
7. In a broeder, the combination with an inclosure, of a plurality of sinuous heating chambers depending from the top of the inclosure and consisting of a single outer plate bent to form a plurality of sinuous portions and connecting portions between said sinuous portions, and inner sinuous plates spaced from the sinuous portions of the outer plates.
8. In a brooder, the combination with an inclosure, of a pair of sinuous heating chambers depending from the top of the inclosure and consisting of a single outer plate bent to form two sinuous portions and a connecting portion between said sinuous portions, separate sinuous inner plates arranged within and spaced from each of the sinuous portions of the outer plate, and an exit Jfor heated air from the interior of the inclosure below the heating chambers, said eXit communicating with thev portion oi' said inclosure between the two sinuous chambers through the top of the inclosure and the connecting portion of said lower plate.
