Specification of Letters Patent.

applicati@ med February 24, 1915. serial no. 10,281.
' ments `in Devices of Expanded Metal, of
which the following is a specification. My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices of expanded metal such as guards for fans and the like and has particular reference to guards for electric fans. The object of the invention is to produce such a device which will be cheap and easy of manufacture, and strong and effective in use. j
f ln the following I have described, in connection with the accompanying drawings, a device illustrating one form of my invention, the features thereof being more particularly pointed out herelnafter 1n the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 14 1s a perspective view of a fan guard illustrating my invention and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
' latter serve for the mounting of the guard on the fan standard (not shown). The entire fan guardl as shown, is expanded from a single piecefof suitable material, such as thin sheet steel,the free ends being fastened together at 8 and 9 by any suitable means as by spot welding. As is obvious from the drawings those portions of arms 4, 4 extending from rim 3 to the outer edge of openings 6 comprise the front face of the guard ;V the openings' 6 bounded by edges 5; 5 comprise the circular face or side 'of the guard and those portions of arms 4, 4 extending from the-inner angle of openings 6- to the attachment means comprise the rear face of the guard.
The arms 4, 4 either o f the front face or the rear face, preferably both faces, may be twisted to present their edges tothe air currents passing through the guard and thus tov olier a minimum of resistance to such air currents. The attachment means 7 may be perforated as at` l0 to provide screw holes for the readysecuring of the guard to the standard (not shown). The
Each ofp the welding at 9, at a point intermediate the pointsl of division to form edges 5, 5 `for openings 6, is left integral with the adjacent arm 4 so as to form the connection 1l between the adjacent openings and thus to practically form a continuous, unbroken, integral chain of openings around the circular face of the guard from one free end'back around again to the other free end. This arms 4, except those united by purpose is accomplished in the construction ,i
of the guard by not separating or cutting the adjacent arms from each other at the'con'- nectionr l1. By this means of construction the fan guard comp-rises a unitary, unbroken, continuous and integral structure, no soldering or other extraneous connecting means being necessary excepting at the two free ends. y
For the purposes of economy of construction as well as to form a balanced and attractive appearing device, it is advisable to have the arms divided as shown although it is obvious that they may be divided at other points along their length without departing from the spirit of the invention. The'relative number of arms is immaterial as they will be varied according to the size and use of the device. Furthermore certain of the arms may be removed by cutting or other# tails as shown and described further than the scope of the appended claims demands;
l claim: A
1. A guard for fans' and the like having a front face comprising a central ring,- and arms radiating therefrom, a rear face comprising a -plurality of attachment means with arms radiating therefrom in groups and a central circular face integral with the arms of. the front and rear faces, the whole bein formed of a single piece of expanded meta 2. A guard for fans and the like having a front Jiace comprising a central ring and arms radiating therefrom, a circular chainlike face formed by splitting and expanding a portion of said arms and a rear face formed of a continuation of said arms, said arms at the rear being gathered in groups to aplurality of attachment means, and said groups being spaced from each other topermit application of the guard, the Whole belng formed of a single piece'of expanded metal- 3. A guard. for fans and the like having a front face comprising a central. ring and arms radiating therefrom, a circular face l formed by splitting and Jexpanding a portionpf said arms and a rear face formed of a continuation of said arms, said arms on said front and rear faces being twisted to present their edges to the verticalplane of the guard, the Whole being formed of a'single pieceof expanded metal'adapted to substantially inclose kthe fan. 4. A guard for fans and the like compris- Aing a series of arms integrallyunited at a common central point on one face of theV guard andd integrally `united to a plurality of points on' the other face of the guard, each arm being split to form an expanded opening and the adjacent arms being integrallyLunited at a point adjacent said open-I ings to form the edges of said openings into a continuous chain, said .chain forming the S.
