To all 'whom it may concern.'
y Be it known that I, PAUL A. SGHUCHART, a subject of the Crown of Austria, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Interfoldin Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for cutting, reversely creasing, .superposing and overlapping sheets, and includes novel means for delivering the sheets in a continuous interfoldedstack.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a machine for cutting, reversely creasing,

The side frames of the machine are denoted by l, 2. The webs 3, 4, are fed from a suitable source of supply (not shownl .between feed rollers 5, 6, to the rotary coact- `ing 'cutting and creasing cylinders 7, 8,
mounted to rotate in the frames. lThe cylinder 7 is provided with cutting blades 9 and creasing blades 10 whichv are alternately secured therein, and coact with blocks 11,12. respectively, located in the cylinder 8, for alternately cutting and creasing the webs as they pass therethrough.
The webs 13, 14, are fed from a suitable source of supply (not shown) Ybetween feed rollers 15, 16, totheir rotary coacting cutting and creasing cylinders 17, 18. The cylinder 17 is provided with cutting blades 19,
and creasing blades 20, which coact with blocks 21, 22, respectively, located in the cylinder 18.
The webs 3, 4, 13, 14, entering from opposite directions will meet and pass downlblade 9 on the cylinder 7 is cutting the sheets from the webs 3, 4, the creasing blade 20 on the cylinder 17 is creasing the webs 13, 14; when the cutting blade 19 on the cylinder 17 'is cutting the webs 13, 14, the creasing blade 10 on the cylinder7 iscreasing the webs 3, 4. Thus it. will .be seen that by this alternately cutting and creasing of the webs and feeding them to one course, they are brought together in a continuous superposed overlapping and reversely creased position, as shown in Fig. 5.
The superposed sheets 2,3, 24, pass downwardly through vertical air extracting , guides 25, 26, to-an oscillating delivery device comprising a pair of upper rolls 27, 28, oscillating lower rolls 29, 30, and tapes 31, 32, passing overthe said-rolls. I
The lower roll 29 is independentlysupported by swinging arms 33, 34, mounted on the shaft35,vof the upper roll 27, and the roll 30 is independently supported by swinging arms 36, 37, mounted on the shaft 38 of theupper roll 28. The tapes and the lower rolls are yieldingly held in engagement by means of springs 39 secured to the swinging arms. Y
The sheets after.. passing fromthe oscillating delivery rolls 29, 30, are delivered in a continuously interfolded stack in a delivery box 40, as shownseparated in Fig. 6,
and are held in this overlapped position within the delivery box 40 by means of a pair of retainers 41, 42, pivoted to the top of the box at 43. These retainers are alternately raised to permit the sheets to enter the boX by means of upwardly projecting arms 44, 45, carried by the retainersV 41, 42, which arms are engaged 'by the rolls 29, 30, in their oscillatory movement. 4

4To direct .the sheets downwardly between the cylinders 8 and 1S, I provide a guide 67 fixedv to the frames 1, 2, and located between pass between the e. vertical guides 25, 26, downwardly to the rolls 27, 2S, I provide the faces of these guides with vertical channels GS, the upper end of which is open and the lower end closed. Near the lower end in each channel there is located a hole 69 leading into the chamber70 which has pipes 71,.

Owing to the speed at which the paper passes from the cylinders S, 18, to the oscillating. delivery, it has'been found that the air should be withdrawn from the paper as .it passes through the guides.
The friction between the paper and the air passing through the guides so constructed, will cause the air to pass down the channels GS, through the holes G9, into the chamber 70 and escape. through the pipes 71, 72, to the outside of the machine.
In the modified form' of oscillating delivery device shown in Fig. 3, the lower rolls are supported in a swinging frame 73 pivoted at 74 to the side frames and they are oscillated in ther same manner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. 'Thetapes 31:5, 32st, are pro- -.vided.with take-up rolls 75, v76, mounted in swinging arms 77, 7 S, pivoted in the side frames. The rolls are provided with springs 7 9, 80, to keep the tapes at the propertensionat all times. Y
In operation, the webs are fed into the ,i feed rolls from both ends of the machine,
passing through the cutting and creasing l cylinders, assembled in superposedrelation between the'cylinders 8 and 18; thence in a ldownward path through the air extracting :It is evident that'various changes may be. resorted to 1n the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit `and scope of my invention; hence -I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the struc-ture herein set forth, but
I'Vhat I claim is 1. rIhe combination with a machine for reversely creasing, superposing and overlapping sheets cut from different webs, of a pair of coacting rotary delivery rolls, means for oscillating the rolls for ,delivering the sheets in a vcontinuous interfoldedstack and a pair of retainers for the top of the stack operated by said rolls to'alternately engage the stack. i
2. Thecombination with a machine for reversely creasing, superposing and overlapping sheets cut from different webs, of a pair of coacting rotary delivery rolls, a swinging supportfor said rolls to cause them to deliver the sheets in a continuous interfolded stack and a pair of retainers for the top of 'the stack operated by said rolls to alternately engage'the stack.
3. The combination with a machine for reversely creasing, superposing and overlap-` ping sheets -cut from different webs, of a pair of coacting endless tape carriers, and
means for oscillating .the delivery e'nd of the tape carriers for delivering' the sheets in a continuous interfolded stack."

The combination with .a machine for reverselyl creasing, superposing and overlapping sheets out' from different webs, of a pair of coacting endless tape carriers, means rfor oscillating the delivery end of the said tape carriers for deliveringthe sheets in a continuous interfolded stack, and a pair of retainers for the top of the stack 'operated yby said tape carriers to' alternately engage the stack. 1

The combination with a machine for reversely creasing; superposing ,and overlapping sheets cut from different webs, of adevice for delivering the sheets in a'continu-4 ous interfolded stack comprising upper and lower pairs of rolls, tapes passing over said rolls, means for oscillating the lower pair of rolls, and a pair of retainers for the top of the stack operated ,bysaid'device to alternately engage the stack.

The combination with al machine for reversely creasing, superposing and overlapping sheets cut from different webs, of af device for delivering the sheets in a continu'- ous interfolded stack comprising upper and lower pairs of rolls, tapes passing over said rolls, means for oscillating the vlower pair o'f rolls, and means for yieldingly holding the lower rolls together. c
7. The combination with a. machine for reversely creasing, superposing and overlapous interfolded stack comprising upper and lower pairs of rolls, tapes passing over said rolls, means for oscillating the lower pair of rolls, and means for yieldingly holding the lower rollsptogether, and a pair of retainers for the top of the stack .operated by said device to alternately'engage the stack.
8. The combinationwith a4 machine for reversely creasing, siiperposing and overlapping sheets cut .from different Webs, of a device for delivering the sheets in a continu ous interfoldedstack comprising upper an,
lower rolls, tapes .passing over said rolls,
means for oscillating the lower rolls about the axes of' their respective upper rolls, and 15 a pair of retainers for the top of the stack yoper/ated by said lower rolls.
