BEGRINDING DEVICE FOR THE VALVES OF EXPLOSION-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whomz't may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. MowRY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regrinding Devices for the Valves of Explosion-Engines, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The objects of the invention are to provide means for grinding the valves of a gasolene or other explosion engine and is particularly adapted to use with a valve which is held against the seat by spring pressure, as in automobile engines, and which are diflicult to grind for this reason.
Heretofore it has been necessary to remove the spring in order to release the valve from tension before grinding and this action will often require partially dismantling the engine. With the improved device however no change of any kind or removal of any part will be required to relieve the tension upon the valve and rotate it upon its seat, so as to remove carbon or other deposits formed thereon.
The invention comprises the improvements in the construction of the valve and means projecting through the engine casing for engaging the valve and for rotating the same also. The engaging means form means for raising the valve against the tension of the spring so that it can be rotated freely upon its seat.
The invention further comprises the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of details hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of engine cylinder showing one valve and the improvements described; Fig. 2 is a similar section showing inlet and exhaust valves; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve; Fig. 4 is a trans verse section of valve removing device;
In these views, A, A, are the valves, B, B are the inlet and exhaust ports controlled by the valves A and A respectively. 0 is a plug which closes the opening C in the casing through which access can be had to the valve.
This plug is provided with a central opening C and a ground and preferably tapered seat C Through this opening the device for operating the valve is inserted.
The means for lifting and rotating the valve comprise, first, a projection D upon the upper side of the valve having a narrow projection E upon each side thereof, spaced from the surface of the valve. These projections can be made readily by securing a key E at a predetermined distance from the valve. G is a rivet for securing the key E in place. H is a stem vertically movable in the opening in the plug and provided with means for lifting androtating the valve.
This comprises a ring I attached to the stem by means of a fork I. The ring is provided with a central opening I through which the projection D passes when thestem is lowered. The key E will pass through the open slots 1 I and by a quarter turn of the stem the key can be made to slip into the grooves I I when the valve can be rotated upon the seat.
Since the pressure of a spring P forces the valve 'upon the seat with too great a force to permit of grinding the seat and valve smoothly, a handle J is provided upon the stem by means of which the stem and valve can be lifted slightly against the tension of the spring so as to relieve the pressure, and by means of the same handle the valve can be rotated to polish the engaging surfaces of valve and seat.
When this action is being performed the handle J is, raised to the outer end of the stem and secured in place by any convenient means such asa pin 7' or key which passes through openings in the handle and stem at K and L. When the stem is not in use it is raised and the handle is screwed thereon at M to bind it securely upon the plug.
The stem is provided with a ground seat M corresponding to the ground seat in the plug so that an air and gas tight joint will be formed.
The stem and plug can remain in place as long as desired and no part will have to be removed to grind the valve.
Having described the invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with an engine cylinder having a valve controlled port and a lifting spring controlled valve therein, said cylinder having an opening in line with the movement of the valve and a plug therein having an opening, of an engaging device upon the outer extremity of said valve, and a device insertible in said opening in said plug for operatively connecting with said engaging means on said valve for lifting said valve against the tension of said spring, said lifting device serving also as a device for rotating said valve, and a ground joint in said plug for said lifting and rotating device. I
2. The combination with an engine cylinder having a valve port and spring controlled valve therein, and a plug in line with said valve, of an engaging means upon the outer end of said valve, an adjustable device for operating said valve adapted to both lift and rotate the same, said operating device movable in said plug, and adapted to make'operative connection with the engaging means upon said valve.
3. The combination with the cylinder of an explosion engine and spring controlled valve therein, of an engaging means upon the outer end of said valve, a device movablein the wall of said cylinder for operatively connecting with said engaging means on said valve to raise and rotate the same, and means for normally securing said operating device out of engagement with said adapted to make operative connection with said engaging means on said valve, to raise and rotate said valve, and a nut for normally securing said stem out of contact with said valve, said nut serving as a clamping device, said stem and wall making a gas tight joint, adapted to be closed by said clamping device.
