Description
"NITED S'rA'rEs PATENT i CHARLES n; Oris AND NORTON P. Orts, OE rONKEEs, NEW YORK.
iMPRQvEMENT iN Hlsfrrie APPARATUS.
Specification forming `part of- Letters Patent No. 122,84,dated January 16, 1872.
-' :Tol'-allfwhom'tt may concern: Beit known that we, CHARLES Oris' and .NORTON P. OTIS, of Yonkers, in the county of A f Westchester and State vof New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Hoist 1 in g'Ap-paratus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact, description, reference being in which two hoisting-ropes are nsed;,. and consists, in a combination' with the stop-pawls, of certain means that in4 the case of either rope breakin-g or hanging slacln'opeiatein a positive manner by the tension con'centratedon the other' rope to throwthe stop-pawls into operation, andthis wit-hout interfering with the actionof thev spring that controls saidv pawls, and which here operates in addition tothe positive means or motion just referred to.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A' represent the uprightsof the hoistway, and B a'portion of the car or traveli11g-platform. G C are theracks'up thesides of said uprights for holding thecar againsttipping or accidental descentin case of the lifting-ropes breakin ger hanging loose, said racks serving, von tension being removed from a liftin g-bar or attachment,
fil), to hold thecar or platform by means of stoppawls E E,y attached to levers/F F, under the control oi' a1 spring, G, which,'uncler breakage 'or dis'arrangement of the ropes, 'as described, causes the'pawls to engage with the racks. This vis the usual action of the pawls whether one or two ropes operating as a divided single -one be used, but vto make said pawls E E applicable to two ropes, H H, so that in case ot' eitherA rope breaking or hanging slack said pawls will act not merely under control ofthe spring; G,.but in a positive manner as derived from the-tension of the other rope. There is mounted, on the car a standard or standards,
I, arranged toV carry a camllike` yoke, J, which works on a fulerum-pin or pivot, b, by or through a slot,lc, in it, that allows of up and down play Y to insure the proper action ot' the pawls. -This cam-like yoke engages with the. lifting-bar D by the fit of its flange between rollers d d carried by the bar. The ropes H H are fastened to this pivoted or swinging ca-nrlike yoke on opposite sidesof its fulcrnm.
' In case'bf both ropes breaking or fouling and hanging loose, then the spring G operates, as heretofore in singleaope hoists, to throw the stop-pawls into operation with the racks on the uprights. In case of only1 one of the ropes Abecoming disarranged or breaking a like-action takes place, with the additional effec-t of the 'tension en the other rope operating, `by the swinging ofthe yoke J to aidin a positive manner the action ofthe stop-pawls to make them engage withtheracks, and the spring further serving to hold Asaid pawls in action after the cainlike yoke has been swung ont of gear with the rollers' on the lifting-rod, which disengag ing action it is preferred the yoke should have at the. close-ot' its swinging strokc,`and so that Asaid yoke when slipping out from between the rollers on the slackening of one the ropes, as described, and after it has performed its function of lockingl the stop `mechanism7 will be thrown back or outofth'e way by the tighteningot'. the other rope, and be prevented, except by special adjustment, from entering again between the rollers on the lifting-rod to unlock the `stop-pawls.
f lVhat-is here claimed, and desired to be se i cured by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination,,with the stop-pawls or mechanism, ot' a pivoted or swinging cam-like yoke arranged to operate on sald mechanism by tension of either of a pair of ropes attached to opposite sides of its swinging center, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the pivoted oan'rlike yoke J withthe spring G, tlielifting bar D, the levers F l?, and the pawls E E, essentially as shown and described.- .f
