To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, FREDERIC I-Linoounr, subject o1 the King of Great Britain, residing at 1 and 2 Ludgate I-Iill, Birmingham, in the county of lVarwick, England, have invented a new and useful Temporary Binder; and I do hereby declarethe .following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention comprises improvements in temporary binders, sometimes termed loose leaf books, such as account books or the like, and refers to that class of such which employ telescopic posts which are engaged by and serve to position the leaves of the book or sheets within the binder.

The primary object of the present invention is to enable the posts to be demounted in an improved manner; another object is the provision of improved posts, the posts each consisting of three telescopic members whereby a greater range of opening of the book may be obtained relatively to its minimum holding capacity; another object is the provision of improved locking means; and a further object is the provision of a book which can be employed with leaves having holes some of which are of the closed type while others are of the open type.

Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a binder according to this invention.

In carrying my invention into practice as illustrated upon the accompanying drawings, Figs. 111, as applied to a ledger binder, 1, 1 indicates the two jaws to which are pivotally connected the covers 2, 2. In the back of these jaws are longitudinal grooves of dove-tail section in which are disposed slides 3, for the purpose of retaining the posts and permitting them to be detached.

The triple expansion posts consist of three members an outer member 4 in the form of a tube, an intermediate member 5 fitted within the outer, and an inner member 6 which may be tubular or solid. The one extremity of the inner member and the one extremity of the outer member are each provided with a head or flange 7, 8 respectively which are adapted to fit within corresponding recesses in the bottom of the grooves in the jaw members preferably in such manner that it may be removed.

The three parts of the post areconnected together so that when the book is opened the intermediate member is drawn out of ]the outer member and over the inner mem- In one form of connection according to this invention and as illustrated the intermediate member 5 is provided with an external groove 9 extending from its one end almost for its full length so that the groove is open at one end and closed at the other. The outer member 4 is provided with an internal projection 11 near its one extremity which engages with the groove and permits the two parts to move relatively in axial direction but prevents disconnection when the parts are in their operative positions.

The inner telescopic member 6 has a longitudinal groove 12 extending in a straight line 'from its head almost to the opposite end where the groove turns at right angles and then to the end of the inner member in .a line parallel to the main length of the groove being so arranged that it is necessary to give to this member a twisting movement to engage with or disengage from a ]projection 12 within the intermediate mem- The aforementioned flanges 7, 8 on the inner and outer telescopic members have notches 13, 14 respectively which engage with projections 15 on the aws so as to prevent relative rotation between said posts and the jaws or other equivalent means may be provided. 7

The sheets would of course be perforated to correspond with the outer telescopic members and it is intended that the intermediate member shall primarily operate to permit the excess extension which is required to enable the sheets to be inserted or removed when the book is open to the extent permited by the inner and outer members.

Any suitable number of these triple posts may be employed.

The locking mechanism of the binder comprises a screw 18 cut away at three sides so as to give three rows of partial screw threads 19 while the outer member 20 has three rows of internal screw threads 21 so arranged that the parts 18, 20 will telescopically engage, and can then be locked by a partial turn. The member 18 has a notch 21 which is engaged by a projection on the jaw while the member 20 has a larger notch 22 which engages a projection 22 so that the part 20 is permitted a partial turn under the influence of a key inserted in a square hole 23. 25, 26 indicate two members of angle section which serve to close the back of the binder and hide the edges of the sheets.

11 it may have a triple expansion post at each end of the jaws the sheet being perforated 'Wif-ll open holes to engage with the triple expansion posts. The jaw is also provided with other posts say two near the middle in which the intermediate member, such as is employed in the triple posts, is omitted and so that when the book is open these parts 16, 17 of the posts separate leaving openings whereby sheets with closed holes may pass over their extremities some of the holes in the sheets being, closed and some open giving to the book the advantages of the closed holes without the disadvantages which have hitherto attended their use.

The two members of the locking device also completely separate from each other when the binder is opened and permit the use of a closed hole at this point with similar advantages as obtained when the intermediate member of the triple post is omitted in the form of construction last described.

What I claim then is 1. In a temporary binder the combination of two grippingjaws each having a longitudinal groove in its outer surface; a series of telescopic posts passed through said jaws from the outside; and a slide in each of said grooves covering the outer ends of said posts and retainingsaid posts in position, but permitting them to be demounted after the slides have been removed.

2. In a temporary binder the combination of two gripping jaws each having a longitudinal groove in its outer surface and a series of holes and recesses in the bottom of said grooves; a series of telescopic posts passed through the holes in said jaws and having heads fitting within the recesses; and a slide in each of said grooves covering the outer ends of said posts and retaining said posts in position, but permitting them to be demounted after the slides have been removed.

3. In a temporary binder the combination of two gripping jaws; and a'series of posts each comprising in combination firstly an outer member having an internal projection, secondly an intermediate member having a longitudinal groove upon its exterior extending not quite to the end of said memher, and receiving said internal projection on the outer member, said intermediate member having also an internal projection, and thirdly an inner member having a longitudinal groove upon its exterior in which the internal projection of said intermediate member engages.

4:. In a temporary hinder the combination of a plurality of triple posts; and one or more double posts, the double posts separating when the binder is opened to its maximum width for the purpose specified.
