Objectsof the invention are to provide an improved device of the character referred to which, while simple and durable in construction, shall be highly efficient and economical and safe in operation; and which shall be particularly adapted for use with natural gas.V These and otherobjects ofthe invention 'will in part be vobvious and in part be more fully explained in the following description.
The invention consists in the novel parts, improvements, combinations, and features of construction herein shown and described.

According to certain other features of the invention, said burnerY comprises an oblong chamber extending transversely of the rst mentioned chamber, has a gas inlet on its outerv side and a multiplicity of inwardly directed perforations inits inner side; additional openings for the admission of air to support combustion are formed in the rear wall of said chamber in the iron above said burner; and said baiiie has its rear portion extended upwardly toward and above said openings in the rear wall.

the embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a casing 7 forming a chamber 8. In order thatthe heat maybe quicklyand advantageously distributed through the bottom of the iron or chamber in a manner that will be apparent, a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves 10 are formed in the bottom of said chamber 8.
Preferably and as shown, a burner`11 is arranged in the rear of the chamber 8 and is oblong in shape, its outer side being formed by the rear wall 12 of the casing and its other sides extending into the chamber 8. A threaded opening `13 is formed in said outer side in which is. fitted the usual Bunsen tube, not' shown. In the inner side of the burner are formed a` multiplicity of inwardlyV directed small perforations 15. It will, be noted that ythese numerous small perforationsare particularly advantageous for the combustion of gas at high pressure, as natural gas, and that as the perforations are distributed throughout the entire length of the inner face of the burner, the iames will be distributed over the entire transverse extent of the bottom of the chamber. y.
In order to support combustion, openings 17l for the admission of atmospheric air are, in the embodiment illustrated, formedin the rear wall :12 of the chamber 8, preferably above said burner 11 and distributed from side to. side of said wall 12. It is to lbe noted that the cold air entering through said openings will not only support combustion but by reason of its downward flow. over the burner will give direction to the heated prod# ucts of combustion, causing them to flow over the bottomof the iron. In its downward passage this atmospheric air, as shown, is also guided by the rear portion 19 of a bafiie plate 20, said portion 19 extending from llO side to side of the chamber 8 and preferably forming Van arch extending toward and above the said openings 17, the advantage of this shape in guiding the atmospheric air being apparent. Said baffle plate 20 is provided for thel purpose of increasing the eiliciency of the iron by forcing the heatedv products of combustion to pass `through the chamber 8 close to the bottom thereof, and, hence, as shown, it extends longitudinally between the planes of the openings 17 and the burner 1l throughout the major portion of the length of the chamber 8 and from side to side. As will be seen, an opening is provided at the forward end of the plate through which the heated products of combustion pass on their journey to the atmosphere through, preferably, a vent at the top of the chamber formed by raising the edge 22 of the top, see Figs. l and 2,on the side away from the operator. In the embodiment shown it has been found advantageous to provide further openings 23 in the sides and forward end, respectively, of the baffle to promote circulation. rlhe baflie 20 rests on lugs 24C and is held in place by a depending lug 25 from the top of the casing bearing against a lug 26 upstanding from the baffle 20. To provide a further supply of atmospheric air to support combustion, openings 28' areformed in the opposite sides of the casing, preferably, below the level of the -bafHe 20 and at points suitably spaced apart.
To secure the operator against injury a second top 30 with handle 3l is provided, said top being spaced apart from the lower or main top of the casing by lugs 33 suitably disposed on the said lower top, both said tops being suitably secured to the casing 7 as by screws 85. fitting in suitably threaded recesses in the casing.
It will be seen that a sad iron constructed as herein shown and described carries out the objects of the invention besides possessing other advantages which will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The invention in its broader aspect is not limited to the precise construction shown and described, as many changes may be made in the details thereof within the scope of the claims without departing from the main principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages. Y

A sad iron including in combination, a casing forming a chamber, a burner in said casing, openings in the rear wall of said chamber above said burner, and a baiiie arranged longitudinally in said chamber between said burner and said openings and ing inwardly directed perforations, openings in the rear wall of said chamber above said' burner, and a baffle arranged longitudinally in said chamber between said burner and said openings and having its rear portion extended upwardly toward and above said openings.

A sad iron including in combination, a casing forming a chamber, a burner arranged at the rea-r of said chamber and having inwardly directed perforations, openings in the rear wall of said chamber above said burner, a baffle' arrangedV longitudinally in said chamber between said burner and said openings and having its rear portion eX- tended upwardly toward and above said openings in the rear wall, and .additional openings in the sides of said chamber below said baffle for the admission yof air to sup port combustion, and a vent in the top of 35 said chamber.

A sad iron including in combination, a casing forming a chamber, a burner arranged at the rear of said chamber and having inwardly directed perforations, openings 9e in the rear wall of said chamber above said burner, a baffle arranged longitudinally in said chamber between said burner and said openings and having vents in its side and front for the passage of the heated products ofcombustion and having its vrear portion extended upwardly toward and above said openings in the rear wall, and additional openings in the sides of said chamber below said baffle for the admission of air tok support combustion, and a -vent in the top of said chamber.

7. A sad iron including 'in combination, a casing forming a chamber, and a burner ar- 130 ranged at the rear of Said chamber, said burner comprising a chamber extending transversely of the rear wall of said first mentioned chamber and having a gas inlet in its outer side and in its inward side a multiplicity of inwardly directed perforations.
