Application filed November 27, 1914, Serial No. 874,204. Renewed October 19, 1$ 18. Serial R0. 126,797.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JAMES F. SMATHERS, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Writing Machines, of which the following is y tuation of each type bar for each depres.
sion of its corresponding key lever.
With these general objects in view the in vention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims, andv.in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,
in which Figure 1, is-a vertical section of a portion of a type-writing machine embodying my invention. V
Fig. 2, is a similar section, on a larger scale,.and-with-certain parts in Fig. 1, omitted, and others in altered position. r
Fig." 3, is a broken plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, but with the type bar removed and tion.
Fig. 4, is apartly sectional plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5, is a sectional detail of-oneof the elliptical driving connections.
Referring to the drawings, a driving roller 2 is mounted in the frame 4 of the machine, this roller being driven in the direction of the arrow Fig. 2, from any convenient soiirce of power and provided with any suitable friction surface, such as a rubber sleeve 6 or its equivalent. Thekey levers are fulcrumed on a transverse bar 10 and'held in normally raised position by means of coil springs 12 supported on a transverse bar 14. The type bars 16 are pivoted at 18 in the usual manner and operits operating lever shown in sec-' atively connected with the bell cranks 20 pivoted to the bearing bar 22.
My invention resides in the improved connections which I provide for operating these bell cranks from the roller 2 and in the means provided for their control from. the key levers.
Each key lever 8 is pivotally connected by' a link 24 with a bell crank 26 pivotally mounted on alrod 28 carried by the frame- 4. At. the side of each bell crank 26 is also "pivoted at one of its ends'a lever 30, the

termediate its ends each lever 30 carries a pin 34 upon which is journaled an elliptical member 36 comprising a pair of elliptical disks connected by a flathub 38. One of f the disks ofeach member 36 -is provided with a pair of pins'40. The hub38 and pins '44, which is provided with a slot 46 for slidingly mounting the pawl upon a pin 48, on the corresponding lever 30, to the rear of which pin 48 said pawl is pivotally connected to one arm of the corresponding bell crank 26. Each lever 30 also carries a leaf spring 50 which extends iii between the disks of the correspondingelliptical member. into position to engage the'hub 38 without engaging the when said felli tical member isrotated, see-the dotted. li iies in- Fig. 4.
In the inoperative pqsitionof the parts each elliptical member is locked by the escapement'mechanism, with its hub 38' hold- -ing the spring 50 pressed backunder a As soon as a keylever is depressed, the connected ,escapement is re-' slight tension.
leased and the elliptical member rotated counterclockwise into engagement with the roller'2.- Continued rotation of the elliptical member is then efiected through-the ac-- tion ofthe driving roller with consequent swinging of the lever 30 and operation 'of the connected type bar. The elliptical member, however, 1s permitted onlya one-half rotation, after which itis relocked by its escapement meehanism until again released by its corresponding key lev'e From the fore oing it will be apparent that :I have produced a typewriting machine embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the same, I reserve the right to make all changes fallin within the spirit and scope of the appen ed claims.
I claim:
1 In a typewriting machine having a driving member and movable type-baroperatlng devices, the combination of an ellipti cal driven member carried by said devices means tending to rotate said driven member until engaged with said drivin member. a
,double escapement mechanism or normally preventing said driven member from turning, and means for tripping the operative parts of the escapement mechanism to pervmit the driven member to be turned and for gaged and driven by said driving member means tendin sufliciently to restore the said means tending to rotate the driven member to operative relation thereto, and for causing the escapement mechanism to arrest the rotation of the driven member before it completes a half revolution.
3. In a typewriting machine having a driving member and movable type-bar operatin devices, the combination of ticaI riven member carried by saiddevices,
until engage with said drivin member, a double escapement mechanism or normally preventlng said driven member from turnan ellip- ,to rotate said driven member ing, means. for tripping the'operative parts of the escapement mechanism to permit the driven member to be turned until engaged and driven by said driving member sufficiently to restore the said means for tend- I ing to rotate the driven member to operative the driven member to continue the rotation thereof until it completes a half revolution.
4;. In a typewriting machine, a driving roller, movable type-bar operating devices, an elliptic member journaled' on said movable type-bar operating devices, having a flattened hub and a pair of diametrically opposite pins, a tensioned spring exerting pressure on said hub to rotate the elliptic member into engagement with the driving roller, an escapement mechanism engaging one of said pins to prevent rotation of the elliptic member by said spring, means for operating said escapement mechanism to trip it from the path of the engaged pin, to permit said spring to rotate the elliptic member into peripheral engagement with the driven roller to cause the latter by continuing the operation of the elliptic member to effect movement of the type-bar operating mechanism and to effect the mg of sald spring by said-hub; said escapement mechanism being positioned by its operation, to arrest the rotation of said elliptic member after the movement of the type-bar operating mechanism and the retensioning of the spring is accomplished, and means to return'the escapement mechanism to its original position to permit said retensionspring to again turn the elliptic member untilarrested by the engagement of the other pin with the escapement mechanism.
Intestimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
